11-12 Page 1A.inddCOLUMBIA — Just days after staging an improbable late-match rally to capture the Class AAA Upper State championship, the Pickens Lady Blue Flame — one of two local teams playing for a State title on Saturday — left less doubt during their match against Hilton Head Island.

Pickens won 3-1 over the Seahawks to take its second consecutive Class AAA State crown at White Knoll High School.

Police: Sex offender tried to solicit minor

EASLEY — A convicted sex offender was arrested on multiple charges Sunday after police allege he sent text messages with photos of a young girl exposing her genitals and spoke sexually to what he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Matthew Leon Arotin, 54, of 201 Barton St. in Easley, was charged with criminal solicitation of a minor, dissemination of obscene material and dissemination of obscene material to a person under 18.

Board discusses borrowing $5.5M

COUNTY — Members of the Pickens County School Board spent their meeting Monday night discussing the possibility of borrowing up to $5.5 million dollars to cover maintenance costs.

Brian Nurick, who has been advising the board on financial matters for the past 13 years, presented his advice on the board obtaining the funds through debt service.

Nurick talked about mill rate stabilization, which would produce a millage rate that would cover the district’s needs

Former officer arrested again

LIBERTY — A former Pickens police officer accused of assaulting a woman while on duty was arrested again last week and charged with criminal domestic violence.

Robert Lee Sapp, 56, of 105 Beverly Court in Liberty, was charged with criminal domestic violence, first offense, after his arrest last Tuesday, according to a Pickens County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

According to the report, a woman told police she and Sapp had been in an argument when she began to fear it would escalate and picked up her cellphone to call 911. She told police Sapp took the phone and tackled her and held her head

EASLEY — Monday afternoon in the business offices of Baptist Easley, former hospital CEO Roddey E. Gettys III received South Carolina’s highest honor, the Order of The Palmetto, for his longtime leadership.

The award was presented by South Carolina Senator Larry Martin on behalf of Gov. Nikki Haley.

PHS Band 4th in State    

The PIckens High School band competed at Batesburg-Leesville High School in Columbia for State Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24, and placed fourth out of 19 bands in the competition. The finish was the was the highest in school history. In other recent events the PHS Band competed at the Red Devil Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11, winning Best colorguard, best percussion, the Cliff Green memorial colorguard award, and their AAAA division and was awarded Grand Champion out of 11 bands. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the band competed at J.F. Byrnes High School at Upperstate AAA championship and was awarded second place out of 22 bands that were competing.

Northland Communications announces annual Food Drive

UPSTATE — Northland Communications is launching its annual Food Drive to help those in need in the Clemson community this Holiday season. Last year, Northland donated over 6,000 pounds of goods company-wide during their Food Drive campaign. This is the fifth annual Food Drive and Northland is looking to donate over 7,000 pounds this year.

COUNTY — Pickens County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs recently announce Margaret Hunter as their Employee of the Quarter.

Aiken has been an employee with the agency for 13 years.

Foothills Community Health Care health fair set for this Saturday

CLEMSON — Foothills Community Health Care, Inc., (FCHC), is a community health center that specializes in serving the health care needs of Medicaid sponsored, and medically uninsured residents of Pickens, Oconee and Anderson counties.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. until noon, FCHC is sponsoring its first community health fair at their office located at 1011 Tiger Blvd. in Clemson. Services will be offered for adults and children, and will include asthma screening, diabetic or blood glucose screenings, blood pressure checks, and much more. Porters Chapel to host chili cook-off

PICKENS — Porters Chapel United Methodist Church will host a chili cook-off and sale on Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will take place the church at 152 E. Preston McDaniel Road in Pickens.

Come judge and eat. Sample and vote for your favorite. Bowls of chili, including crackers and drink will be $3. Chili plates will be $5 and include chili, corn bread, slaw and drink.
