Local teacher, husband found dead in NC

LIBERTY — A Pickens County elementary school teacher and her husband were found dead on Monday after an apparent murder-suicide.

According to the Haywood County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office, deputies found the bodies of Eva Haynie, 51, and her husband, Richard, 54, in a home in the Hemphill community in northern Haywood County.

Wife enters guilty plea in killing

PICKENS — A Dacusville woman pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy charges in the January shooting death of her husband last week.

After taking a negotiated plea deal on Friday, Crystal Gail Williams, 35, will serve a sentence of life without parole for her part in the Jan. 26 killing of Shane Williams. She was also sentenced to up to five years for the conspiracy charge.

EASLEY — The School District of Pickens County’s five-year plan for addressing capital needs has resulted in concerns among supporters of the county’s smallest schools and the Pickens County Taxpayers Association.

EASLEY — No one was hurt as fire destroyed a popular Easley restaurant early Monday morning.

According to Easley Fire Department Capt. J.D. Willis, firefighters received a call at 6:29 a.m. about a fire at Michael’s Pizzeria, located at 101 N. Main St.

Willis said the fire was contained to the business and extinguished, although some adjoining businesses did have smoke inside them.

Willis said there were no smoke detectors or fire supression equipment noticeable in the building.

In a message posted to Facebook on Tuesday, owner Michael Hedrick said the pizzeria “will have to be totally rebuilt.”

Hedrick thanked community members for their support.

County football coaches out

COUNTY — Two Pickens County high schools are in the market for new football coaches after disappointing seasons on the gridiron.

School District of Pickens County spokesman John Eby confirmed Tuesday that Pickens coach Chad Seaborn and Easley coach Grayson Howell will both remain as teachers at their respective schools but will no longer handle coaching duties.

PICKENS — After helping lead the Lady Blue Flame to back-to-back state championships, Pickens High School senior Davis Hendricks will be taking her game to the next level.

Hendricks signed Thursday to play her college volleyball at Southern Wesleyan University.

Central railroad museum open on Saturday

CENTRAL — Beginning this weekend, the Central Railway Museum will be open to the public with trains running from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. every Saturday.

The museum at 108 Werner St. and the Function Junction storefront at 131 W. Main St. will both be open for each Saturday.

Ministerial association to offer free winter clothes

PICKENS — Winter Warmth 2014, sponsored by the Pickens Ministerial Association, will offer free good, used coats, jeans, sweaters, shoes and baby clothes to anyone in need.

The event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Pickens Recreation Center, 545 Sangamo Road, Pickens.

To get to the recreation center, turn off U.S. Highway 178 just past Ingles.

No dealers or resellers will be allowed.
