Pickens Chamber Holds annual Banquet

Police: Woman hit child in head, face
PICKENS — A Pickens woman was arrested last week after police said she hit a child numerous times in the head, face and body.
Anita Ann McNeely, 49, of 138 Dodgens Drive, was charged with cruelty to a child, according to a news release from Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe.

Liberty weighs moving city hall

LIBERTY — Change may be coming to Liberty’s City Hall in the form of a potential move from its current location to the Rosewood Center.
During Monday’s city council meeting, Liberty mayor Eric Boughman cited several benefits to the move.
“The Rosewood Center is a historic building, and it should be treated that way,” Boughman said.
Monday wreck kills man near Pickens
PICKENS — A Belton man was killed after his vehicle struck a utility building being hauled on a trailer near Pickens on Monday morning.
Stacy Dean Searcy, 39, was driving north on Moorefield Memorial Highway when he crossed the centerline, hit the building and lost control of his vehicle, which overturned, according to Pickens County coroner Kandy Kelley.
Kelley said Searcy was not wearing a seatbelt but was not ejected from his vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Kelley said.
Whitehurst objects to piecemeal approach to fire district issues

COUNTY — Pickens County councilman Trey Whitehurst objected to a request last week from the Crosswell Fire District for a federal grant to increase personnel for the next two years.
The SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant would allow the district to hire additional firefighters for two years, but the district would be responsible for coming up

PICKENS — After advancing through two phases of online competition, the Pickens High School JROTC Leadership Team composed of Carole Thomas, Andrew Lathe, Zach Chastain, Paul Dillingham and Bryce Thomas will compete in person at the final championship event of The 2015 Army JROTC Leadership Bowl Championship in Washington D.C., on the campus of The Catholic University of America on June 26-30.
The event is sponsored by the Army JROTC and is conducted by College Options Foundation.

Six Mile church offers safety class for women
SIX MILE — At 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 14, Six Mile Baptist Church will host a free women’s personal safety class conducted by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.
The training will address “back to the basics of safety,” and the target audience is all women interested in learning more about safety-related topics.
