SUNSET — A Florida teen died Monday after falling more than 100 feet from a rope course swing at a youth camp in northern Pickens County.

COLUMBIA — After a long and controversial battle, a final vote made by the S.C. House on Thursday approved the removal of the Confederate flag from the State Capitol grounds.

Normally only a formality, the vote was the end to a historic decision for South Carolina. After 15 years, the flag was removed and will now be displayed in the Confederate Relic

COLUMBIA — As Sen. Larry Martin struggled with the question of whether the Confederate flag should be removed from Statehouse grounds, he looked back at Southern Civil War legends Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Wade Hampton.

“They felt the Confederate flag should have been put away in a place of respect after the Civil War,” Martin said. “They were intent on trying to bring the country back together.”

Sheriff’s office arrests 42 on family court bench warrants

COUNTY — During a month-long roundup, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 42 people who had
outstanding family court bench warrants.

Chief deputy Creed Hashe said the warrants were mostly issued for failure to pay child support as ordered.

Sheriff Rick Clark issued a directive to deputies to focus on locating those with outstanding family court warrants, and deputies served a total of 54 warrants on the 42 people arrested.

“It takes a lot of resources to research, identify and locate a lot of these people because oftentimes they move from the original address on file with the court,” Clark said. “As we devote resources to searching these folks

Hiker dies after slip on waterfall

PICKENS — For the second time in three weeks, a hiker died this week after slipping and falling from a Pickens County waterfall.

Craig Schulz, 44, of Greenville, was standing at the top of Twin Falls — also known as Eastatoe Falls — when he slipped and fell on Monday, according to Pickens County deputy coroner

Police: Woman took $75K from employer

CENTRAL — A Central woman was arrested last week after a six-month investigation into more than $75,000 missing from a local business.

Rebecca Leigh Martin, 40, of 125 McAlister St., was charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent with a value more than $10,000 in the case.

Easley gearing up for Big League World Series

EASLEY — The City of Easley is gearing up for the Big League World Series, which will be returning to the J.B. “Red” Owens Complex for the 15th year July 28 through Aug. 4.

BLWS director Jon Humphrey addressed Easley mayor Larry Bagwell and city council members on Monday night.

“We’ve had some great tournaments here,” Humphrey said.

Pickens chamber plans cookout for members

PICKENS — The Greater Pickens Chamber of Commerce is planning a way to say thank you for the support its members and invites all to a time of fellowship with a hamburger and hot dog cookout, along with a night of entrainment at the Pickens Amphitheater with the YAMS.

The Gatehouse Restaurant will cater the meal. The cookout is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the chamber office located at 222 West Main St. in Pickens, with the concert by the YAMS at 7 p.m.

McDonald’s dedicates flag pole to Austin

McDonald’s in Pickens held the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new facility on Tuesday evening with state and local dignitaries, employees, families and friends. Officials also dedicated a flag and flag pole at the restaurant in honor of Pickens native Barrett Austin, who lost his life in Afghanistan. A bronze plaque on the front of the new location honors Austin’s military service. The new McDonald’s will be open to the public this Thursday.

‘Grumpy Old Men’ to host yard sale

SIX MILE — The Grumpy Old Men of Six Mile will be having a yard sale on Saturday, July 25, beginning at 7 a.m. at 732 North Main St. in Six Mile.

This event is being held to help raise funds for Pickens County Meals on Wheels (MOW). The huge yard sale will feature a
