Man charged with attempted murder
Police say suspect beat 67-year-old Clemson man in his own front yard
CLEMSON — A 19-year-old Greenville man is charged with attempted murder after Clemson police claim he attacked a man in his own yard Saturday morning.
Clemson Police Chief Jimmy Dixon said Rocco Michael Recchia is being held at the Pickens County Detention Center after being denied bond.
Dixon said in a news release that officers received a call about a possible fight on Wesley Drive around 7:30 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, Dixon said, they found a 67-year-old man lying in the front yard of his home and called EMS.
According to Dixon, an investigation revealed that the victim had gone outside to speak to a man in his yard, later identified as Recchia, and the suspect used the victim’s cellphone to make a call.

PICKENS — A 66-year-old Marietta man has been charged with molesting a child several times over four months.

Blue Ridge Fest celebrates 20 years

National Pill Take-Back Day set for Saturday
PICKENS — This Saturday, April 29, law enforcement agencies will join with three local facilities in Pickens County to sponsor a day for local residents to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Smith named PHS athletic director

Blue Ridge optimistic about growth

PICKENS — After being hit by the recession for a number of years, officials with Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative are happy with the growth they’ve seen recently.
CEO Charles Dalton spoke at a recent media luncheon hosted by the cooperative.
Dalton began his tenure as CEO at Blue Ridge in 1982.
“I can remember at that day and time, when he came, we had 19,000 members,” Blue Ridge communications manager Terry Ballenger said. “Today we have 65,000. We have really grown under his leadership.”
“Business has been very good for Blue Ridge, starting last year, and then this year we’re continuing to see that growth,” Dalton said. “Since 2008, we have not had a lot of growth. The economic downturn really hit us.”
Last year, the cooperative added 700 net new members to its lines, he said.

Tribute planned Sunday in honor of Dot Jackson
PICKENS — A program of tribute to honor award-winning novelist Dot Jackson is scheduled for Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Pickens Community Center, located 
at 129 School House St.
The event, titled “Remembering Dot Jackson, her life and times,” is free and open to the public and is sponsored by friends and colleagues of Jackson.
The two-part program includes readings from her work, a selection of bluegrass music by Robert Wood and Friends, and a classical violin piece by Carla Padgett, a performance by Heartstrings, storytellers Lib Porter and Nick Hallman, a tribute by newspaper editor Karl Hill, a tribute by retired area teacher Louise Hope and a tribute and readings by naturalist Dennis Chastain and Dr. John Hains of Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Science.
In addition, Tom Johnson of the Birchwood Center for Arts and Folklife will read selections

The event saw 23 classmates and members of their families enjoy a great meal and fellowship at the Gatehouse Restaurant in downtown Pickens. ‘May Days’ coming to Mile Creek
SIX MILE — Mile Creek Baptist Church will host “May Day” starting May 2.
The event will feature special services at the church each Tuesday in the month of May. On May 2, Barry Spears will lead the service. May 9 will feature Eddie Durham. On May 16, Joel Logan will be the speaker. May 23 will feature Chris Haizlip, and on May 30 Joe Arthur will take the pulpit.
There will also be a special singing each night. Services will begin at 7 p.m.
Led by Pastor Kevin Kuykendall, Mile Creek Baptist Church is located at 104 Lakeside Drive in Six Mile.
