Plans underway for PHS Class of 1972 reunion
PICKENS — The Pickens High School class of 1972 is planning a 45-year reunion.
The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Looper’s Barn, located at 101 Laurenwood Drive in Pickens.
Prime rib with accompaniments will be served for $21 per person.

Gospel event planned Aug. 19 at mill
PICKENS — The wheel will be turning and the hills resounding in song at Hagood Mill on Saturday, Aug. 19, as the mill will host an old-time gospel sing-along.

Please don’t destroy our coastline
I love South Carolina for its people and beauty. We have mountains, lakes, waterfalls and one of the most beautiful coastlines on the Atlantic Ocean. The new regulations that banned offshore drilling have only been in place 
for a little more than a year, and it was a battle to get them passed.
So, when I read that the Trump administration has turned back the clock on offshore drilling, rolled back safety regulations and ignored the needs of coastline communities, I literally couldn’t believe it. But it’s true. And it is frightening.

VA caregiver program
The Department of Veterans Affairs caregiver program is back. That should 
be great news to people who were left in limbo after the VA pulled the plug on thousands of caregivers earlier this year while it considered how to revamp the program.
The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers gives aid to eligible veterans who were severely injured on or after Sept. 11, 2001, and who need personal care for daily activities, such as bathing and dressing, or who need supervision or protection because of impairment. Think you’re too old for a pet? Fiddlesticks!
One of the saddest things I’ve overheard lately was a woman who’d just lost her very senior cat. She’d loved that cat for years and would have made a 
great owner for another one from the local shelter. But she hesitated, afraid she would die before the cat did, and then the cat would go the shelter and possibly be put down.

Liberty — Bradley Charles Coleman, 57, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at Capstone Rehab. Mr. Coleman was born in Easley, son of 
Blonnie Winona Sentell Coleman and Franklin Calvin Coleman of the home. He loved Elvis, people and music.

Pickens Service Club names officers for the coming year
PICKENS — The Pickens Service Club, previously the Pickens Sertoma Club, recently named new officers for the coming year — President Terry 
Houston, Vice President Adam Lambert, Treasurer John Sparks and Secretary Ben Mann.
The Pickens Service Club is a group of local men who work together to support and contribute financially to worthy local needs. For many years, the group has paid to send two Pickens County youth to Camp Sertoma at Clemson. This year it was two young men from Helping Hands.
In the past year, contributions were made to the Cannon Memorial Hospital

Cannon Memorial Auxiliary Spirit Night set at Wendy’s
PICKENS — Cannon Memorial Auxiliary will hold a Wendy’s Spirit Night on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 5-8 p.m.
Wendy’s is located at 505 Ann St. in Pickens. Participants can pick up a flyer to present at Wendy’s in either the AnMed Health Cannon Auxiliary Shoppe or at the Outpatient Registration area prior to the Spirit Night.
Flyers will also be available at Wendy’s the night of event. Participants must present a flyer in order for the auxiliary to benefit. Wendy’s is donating a percentage of the proceeds to the auxiliary.
