Coroner rules death suicide after body found near Liberty

LIBERTY — The death of a man whose body was found in a wooded area of Pickens County late Sunday afternoon has been ruled a suicide by the Pickens County Coroner’s Office.

CLEMSON —
Kelly Bryant says not much has changed for him since being named Clemson’s new starting quarterback.
He hasn’t gotten any more attention than usual walking around campus or going to class, he’s put in the same level of preparation and effort in practice, and he believes in himself as much now as he did when he got to Clemson.

Event to raise money for camp at Rocky Bottom

COUNTY — Take a trip up to Rocky Bottom on Saturday for a good time that supports a great cause.
The Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center of the Blind will host its annual Fun Day this Saturday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Officials talk law enforcement at meeting

COUNTY — Pickens County officials recently heard about some important 
law enforcement issues.
Baker Cleveland, unit head for the 13th Judicial Circuit, was one of the speakers at a summer meeting of Pickens United.
“We have 10 lawyers that are full-time prosecutors in Pickens,” he said.
Specializations among the group include juvenile prosecution, criminal sexual conduct and worthless checks.
“We all work as a team,” Cleveland said.
In the last decade, warrants brought to general sessions, carrying sentences from 30 days up to life in prison, have increased more than 20 percent.
“Last fiscal year, 2016-2017, we had over 4,200 warrants,” Cleveland said. “For all those 4,200 warrants, in Pickens County currently right now we have 12 weeks of court a year.”

First Friday Parade to kick off season

CLEMSON — Clemson fans of all ages will gather in the streets of Tiger Town at 6 p.m. Friday for the annual First Friday Parade.
The parade tradition stretches back 43 years and is always celebrated the Friday before the first home football game. This year, the football game will begin at noon Saturday against Kent State.

Venture Outdoors Day set for Sept. 30
PICKENS — The city of Pickens will host an all-day family-friendly outdoor festival from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30.
The event, called Venture Outdoors Day, will highlight all that the Pickens area has to offer residents and visitors alike when it comes to outdoor sports.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. on the Doodle Trail with a half marathon. At 10 a.m., there will be a 5K trail run at Town Creek Bike Park, behind the Pickens Recreation Department on Sangamo Road. At 2 p.m., also at Town Creek Bike Park, there will be a mountain bike race hosted by Upstate

CENTRAL — The annual reunion for descendants of Andy R. and Bessie Shelton Ross will be held this Sunday, Sept. 3.
