Planning efforts underway for 150th anniversary celebration

PICKENS — Now that Pickens County Council has officially proclaimed 2018 Pickens County’s sesquicentennial year, planning for celebrations can begin in earnest.

Representatives from a variety of organizations met last week to brainstorm about aiding the 150th anniversary celebration throughout the year.

Coroner confirms flu deaths

PICKENS — Pickens County coroner Kandy Kelley confirmed two more cases of deaths attributed to influenza last week.

“We now have four confirmed flu death cases — three Type A and one Type B,” Kelley said.

But Kelley added that all four victims had other medical issues that also contributed to their deaths.

County working to name hangar after teen killed in plane crash

LIBERTY — An effort is underway to name a hangar at the Pickens County Airport after a Pickens High School student who died in 2014.

Dakota Jacks was killed in a small plane crash in June 2014. He was 15.

Pickens legend Anthony to join another hall of fame

Former PHS, USC two-sport star led Flame to 9 state titles

PICKENS — The newest inductee into the S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Hall of Fame is a very familiar figure in the Pickens sports scene.

Former Pickens High School volleyball coach Peggy Anthony will be the 14th person to be inducted into the hall of fame, according to SCCAWS executive secretary Amy Boozer.

“Peggy’s successful coaching career, involvement with CAWS and her dedication to female sports in South Carolina made her very deserving of this prestigious honor,” Boozer said in a news release.

Anthony will be be inducted into the hall this Sunday, Feb. 18.

Child care center, chapel among future Clemson campus facilities

Leadership Pickens County project to help animal shelter

World Spay Day event set to raise funds Feb. 27

PICKENS — The Leadership Pickens County Class of 2018 is working to help the Pickens County Animal Shelter and save animals’ lives.

For its nonprofit community project, the group is creating Leadership Legacy Park, an outdoor park area at the shelter that will give people and pets a place to connect with the goal of increasing adoptions and decreasing the number of pets that linger in the shelter or worse — are euthanized.

LIBERTY — A job fair is planned this week for high school seniors planning to directly to work after graduation.

PMA’s Lenten luncheon series set around the area

PICKENS — The Pickens Ministerial Association will sponsor the Community Lenten Luncheon series. Traditionally, Lent is a time for penance by all Christians lasting 40 days (not including Sundays) and beginning with Ash Wednesday.
