Save-A-Lot hosts Powerade drive for PHS

When school started on Aug. 20, Save-a-Lot was already in back-to-school mode. In cooperation with the Pickens High School athletic department, Save-a-Lot began a community Powerade drive to collect drinks for the student-athletes. Matthew Reece, the Pickens store manager and a PHS graduate, made the first delivery of drinks on Sept. 17. He is pictured above with athletic director Chad Smith. The Pickens Save-a-Lot is part of the Goodwin Group’s Save-a-Lot stores, which are owned by the Goodwin family, who live in Greenville and have stores in West Union, Laurens, Pickens, Union and Anderson. The Powerade drive will continue through Oct. 31. Community members can support PHS student athletes by purchasing a Powerade for $0.99 at the Pickens Save-a-Lot store.

PIEDMONT — The Pickens Blue Flame knew they had a tall order ahead when they left for Wren on Friday.

The Hurricanes had not lost a game, dominating each of their opponents so far in 2018, but Pickens coach Chad Smith had his team prepared, and despite falling 35-14, his team played with a toughness and heart that would make any Pickens fans proud.

“Wren is a great football team, both offensively and defensively,” Smith said. “I give all the credit in the world to them. We made too many mistakes to really give them a great game. Our kids fought. They had every

LIBERTY — Entering region play fresh off a midseason bye week, the Liberty Red Devils faced the tall task of facing defending Region I-3A champion Seneca on Friday night.

On a night that featured the halftime induction of the first-ever class of the Liberty High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Devils fell behind 24-0 in the first half before battling back into contention in an eventual 34-14 loss to the Bobcats.

Liberty entered the week 3-2 overall and riding a two-game winning streak, while Seneca made the trip to Red Devil Stadium sporting a 1-4 record.

The records went out the window, however, as the Bobcats scored the first

GREENVILLE — Keyed by playing a nearly perfect first quarter, Easley got its second consecutive region win Friday night, defeating Wade Hampton, 34-13.

Easley scored 20 first-quarter points, held Wade Hampton to just one first down in the quarter and blocked a Generals punt.

“It was a good first quarter,” Easley coach John Windham said. “We wanted to get off to a fast start, and we did. Fortunately, we did.”

On the fourth play from scrimmage following three runs, quarterback Dallas Odom faked a handoff to Jeremy Harried and hit senior receiver

Lions open region schedule with big win at Palmetto

By Bru Nimmons

WILLIAMSTON — The Daniel Lions got off to a scorching start in region play on Friday as they dismantled the Palmetto Mustangs by a final score of 59-9.

The Lions asserted their dominance early, scoring the first 28 points as they easily beat the Mustangs on their own turf.

“I thought we executed at a pretty good level tonight,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said. “Our kids played hard for the whole 48 minutes and they really believed in one another. I told them to take care of Daniel, and that’s exactly what they did tonight.

“Our offense was prepared, and that’s what led to the hot start tonight. I’ve been preaching preparation all year, and it paid off tonight. We work these boys hard, and that makes Friday the easiest part of the week for them.”

The Lions were paced offensively by the play of star quarterback Tyler Venables, who picked up four touchdowns in the first half to bump his season total to 20.

However, the performance of the night came from senior receiver Hampton Earle, who had four catches for 140 yards and three scores to go along with a 21-yard first-quarter touchdown run.

“Scoring four touchdowns feels amazing, but the best thing is picking up the win,” Earle said. “Especially taking off two weeks, it felt good to come out here and get a win.”

The Lion defense had another dominant night, picking off Palmetto quarterback Blair Garner twice while completely shutting down the Mustang rushing attack.

“My defensive coaches had a great gameplan tonight,” Fruster said. “They figured out a way to shut down a very good quarterback. He is athletic and very similar to the type of player we see every day in practice, so hats off to my staff.”

Neither team could get much going early until the Lions took over midway

CLEMSON — Prior to practice last Tuesday evening, Chase Brice was Clemson’s third-string quarterback.

On Saturday afternoon, the redshirt freshman from Grayson, Ga., found himself tasked with trying to keep the third-ranked Tigers’ hopes of making a fourth straight run to the College Football Playoff alive against Syracuse.

In the aftermath of Kelly Bryant’s decision to transfer, and following a game-ending injury to newly anointed starter Trevor Lawrence late in the second quarter, Brice delivered in the face of overwhelming odds — with no shortage of help from Travis Etienne — to help lead Clemson back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 27-23 win over the previously unbeaten Orange at Memorial Stadium.

“There were a lot of things going on this week, and it was obviously a very emotional week for our team,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “As coaches, we knew that today was going to say a lot about our team and
