LIBERTY — More than 60 children ages 10-13 participated in the annual Liberty Police Department summer camp last week.
The day camp, which met at Liberty Middle School last Monday-Friday, is designed to give area kids something positive to do during the summer, according to LPD Sgt. Mike Constance. Constance said the camp offers kids alternatives to drugs, alcohol, gangs and violence.
A fee of $30 is asked for the camp, but not required.
The camp is primarily funded by donations from local businesses, including Toyota of Easley, Hendrick Honda, McKinney Dodge, Vulcan Materials, King’s Asphalt, Blue Ridge Electric, and Liberty Family Pharmacy.
The camp met daily with games in the LMS gym, and classes taught on safety, respect, and saying no to drugs and alcohol.
The campers were also also treated to field trips to a Greenville Drive baseball game, Discovery Island water park, a movie in Easley, bowling, the Greenville Zoo, skating, and a cook-out, swimming and hiking at Table Rock.
The camp is staffed by officers of the Liberty Police Department and high school students as counselors. Constance raises the money for the camp, plans, and directs the camp, with officer Mike Ticknor assisting.
