Robert Pickens Mauldin

Hughson, Calif. — Robert Pickens Mauldin, who always called Pickens home, lost his battle to leukemia on Oct. 6 in Hughson, Calif.

Mauldin, the son of former Pickens residents Mason and Margaret Mauldin, was 71.

Though he moved from Pickens as a freshman in high school, he returned to Pickens nearly every summer of his life. One year, he worked at Singer Mill prior to his tenure with the U.S. Army. He was a captain and had a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968-1969 and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Mauldin also had careers with Southern Pacific Railroad and owned his own landscaping business.

After moving from Pickens, Mauldin graduated from Vacaville High School, where he was a standout baseball and football player. His father, Mason, was a professional baseball player.

Mauldin, the nephew of former Pickens mayor Ted Shehan, attended Cal State University at Sacramento. He was an avid golfer and occasional fisherman. He enjoyed playing golf at the courses in Upstate South Carolina with his many Pickens County friends and fishing at Mauldin Lake.

Mayor Shehan said Mauldin was “like a brother, not a nephew. He was actually five months older. And for the first 12 years of our lives, we were together every single day. We did everything together. It was always Robert and Teddy or Teddy and Robert. Never just Teddy or just Robert.”

Shehan added, “Though he lived across the country as an adult, Pickens was always his home. Everyone in that first-grade class at Pickens Elementary has stayed close.”

Mauldin was a member of the Possum Valley Country Club. During his summer visits to Pickens, he often played softball for local mill teams and was known for his power hitting. He often “rattled the pines” at the Sanger softball field, now known as Hooper Softball Field.

Mauldin is survived by his wife Deborah (Modesto, Calif.), children Ryan (Laurie), of Modesto, daughter Kelly Ness (Bryan) of Temecula, Calif., sister Kitty (Jeff) of Modesto; and brother Tommy (Cat) of Redmond, Ore. Mauldin is also survived by five grandchildren, aunt Catherine Carlson of Central and numerous cousins, all of whom are South Carolina residents.

Mauldin is the grandson of Dewey and Nell Shehan and Wayman and Maud Mauldin, all of Pickens. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Robert’s son, Derek, preceded him in death.

A celebration of life and a memorial golf tournament will be held at a later date.
