Ruth Mary Medlin

RIDGEWAY — Ruth Mary Medlin, 75, formerly of Pickens, passed away on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018.

She had been a resident of Ridgeway since 1996 and was a member of In Touch Ministries and the First Baptist Church of Pickens.

Mrs. Medlin was born Aug. 21, 1943, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Antonio Ortega Morales, a native of Spain, and Helen Paulin Skavarina, a native of Czechoslovakia.

Mrs. Medlin is survived by a brother, Tony Morales of Massillon, Ohio; two sons, Kenneth Wayne Peterman III (Tami) of Pickens and Edward Vincent Peterman; two stepchildren, Dennis Medlin of Ridgeway and Patti Shumpert (Greg) of Lexington and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Wayne Medlin, and sister, Dolores Mallette.

She was a devoted wife and a loving mother, and will be missed by all who knew her.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, from 2-3 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Stone officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pennie Maree McAlhany Wendelken

PICKENS — Mrs. Pennie Maree McAlhany Wendelken, 58, of Pickens, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.

After a hard-fought six-year battle with cancer, she passed peacefully at home. Born on May 21, 1960, in Branchville, she was the wife of Larry “Scot” Wendelken and daughter of Richard and Margaret Harbeson McAlhany of Branchville.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Joe and Rachel “Vicky” McAlhany of Branchville, and maternal grandparents, Kannie and Marie Harbeson of St. George.

Pennie was a graduate of Spartanburg Methodist College and Winthrop University. After college and before children, she worked as an insurance adjuster for Crawford and Co. and Kemper Insurance Companies. She was known by friends and family for her love of the Bible, outgoing and cheerful personality, bright, colorful clothing, and for home-schooling her three smart and beautiful daughters. She was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 34 years and parents are daughters, Lt. Abbie L. Wendelken of McConnell AFB, Kansas, Ensign Amalie A. Wendelken of Troy, N.Y., and Andie Marie Wendelken of Florence; a sister, Patsy Davis (George) of Aiken; brothers, Everett McAlhany (Sherri) of Reevesville, Wade McAlhany (Dawn) of Cope, and Kelvin McAlhany (Theresa) of Rowesville; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3 at Beulah Baptist Church in Branchville, with her uncle, Rev. David Harbeson, officiating, followed by burial at the McAlhany Cemetery on the Wire Road.

Ruby Evatt Smith

EASLEY — Mrs. Ruby Evatt Smith, 76, wife of Robert Edward “Bob” Smith, passed away on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Bruce Robert Evatt and the late Dora Marie Hayes Evatt, Mrs. Smith was a paralegal and retired from Pickens County Family Court. She was a member of Fellowship Community Church in Liberty.

Ruby loved life, but her greatest love was her family and grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 57 years, are two daughters, Sherri S. Clowser (George William Clowser III) of Lancaster, Va., and Gayla S. Smith (Tony Smith) of Liberty; a sister, Bethel Hudson (Charles) of Pickens; three grandchildren, Nikki Smith, Justin Smith and Tensley Clowser; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a brother, Jesse Bruce Evatt; and a sister, Ethel Smith.

The family held a memorial service Nov. 1 at Fellowship Community Church in Liberty.

Jean M. Moody

MARIETTA — Jean McConnell Moody, 91, of Marietta, wife of the late Leon Moody, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018.

Born in Marietta, she was a daughter of the late Julius Drake McConnell and Janie Attaway McConnell.

Mrs. Moody retired from J.P. Stevens’ Monaghan Plant after 49 years of dedicated service. She had a strong belief in education, and after retirement she returned to school to obtain her GED. Being full of life, she enjoyed riding motorcycles, turning wood into amazing bowls and flying Ultralight planes.

Surviving are her daughters, Kim Moody Jackson (Jeff) of Marietta and Boots Moody Roberts of Easley; a granddaughter, Samantha Roberts; a great-grandson, Noah Roberts; and a sister, Maxie Eades of Marietta.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by eight brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with burial following at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Travelers Rest.

Katomah Sue Craine

SUNSET — Katomah Sue Craine, 70, passed from this life on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018.

Sue was born in Pickens County, daughter of the late Miles T. and Avanelle Davis Craine. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother, Joe Donny Craine (Vicki) of San Antonio, Texas; and nephews, Steven R. Craine (Paula) and David A. Craine.

Services were held Nov. 2 at Holly Springs Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Margie Thomas

LIBERTY — Marjorie “Margie” Yates Thomas, 100, formerly of Liberty, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, at Bayberry Retirement Center in Greer.

Born in Liberty, she was the widow of Clifton E. Thomas and a daughter of the late Kiel and Jane Breazeal Yates. She was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a longtime member of East Side Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Nancy T. Neves (Wayne) of Travelers Rest; a daughter-in-law, Froline Thomas of Mauldin; four grandchildren, Bryan Neves (Terri), Dale Neves (Pam), Sheila Brock (Jon) and Tim Thomas; and four great-grandchildren, Brandi, Nicholas, Charlotte and Jessalyn.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne C. Thomas.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Thomas were held Nov. 3 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel, with burial following at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

John Beco Watson

PICKENS — John B. Watson, 68, husband of the late Frances G. Watson, passed from this life Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, he is a son of the late Willis Oren Watson and Evelyn Duckworth Watson. John was a member of Bethany Church of God and spent most of his career in textiles, but also worked as a newspaper delivery person and served in the National Guard for 20 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Fran (Michael) Burgess; a grandson, Mikey Burgess; siblings, Jerry (Lou) Watson, Miriam (Joe) Waldrop, Carolyn (Lewis) Pace, David (Joy) Watson and Sheila (Whit) Tinsley, all of Pickens.

John was predeceased by his parents, his wife and his twin sons, John and Shawn Watson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Janasue Trotter Burgess

PICKENS — Janasue Trotter Burgess, 69, wife of 54 years to James Burgess, passed from this life on Oct. 28, 2018.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Frances Trotter.

Survivors include her husband; a grandson, Brad Cox (Courtney) of Pickens; great-grandson, Dawson Cox; niece, Crystal Spearman; nephew, Michael Cox (Melisa); two sisters, Ann Owens and Gail Spearman; great-nephews, Eric Cox, Stephen Cox and Aaron Cox; great-nieces, Kaylee Cox, Alyssa Cox, Breanna Walters and Sierra Walters; great-great-nephews, Coyltn Cox, Eli Cox and Grayson Cox; and great-great-niece, Adelynn Cox.

Mrs. Burgess was predeceased by her parents and a son, Greg Cox.

Janasue was a member of Bethany Church of God.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 31 at Bethany Church of God, with burial following at the Griffin Baptist Church cemetery.

Shirley S. Garrison

LIBERTY — Shirley Swayngham Garrison, 72, of 410 Liberty Highway, died on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at her residence.

Born in Liberty, she was the wife of David Milton Garrison Sr. of the home and a daughter of the late Eugene Swayngham and the late Frances Howe and Samuel B. Dalton. She was retired from Clemson University and enjoyed spending her free time gardening and being with her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of Golden Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Angela Nix (Kevin) of Liberty; a son, David M. Garrison Jr. (Susan) of Liberty; a sister, Judy Brooks of Liberty; a brother, Roger Dalton of Liberty and four grandchildren, Trey Garrison, Cameron Garrison, Samuel Garrison and Sabrina Bryson.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Carol Walters, Joan Coleman and Kathy Swayngham.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Garrison were held Nov. 5 at Golden Creek Baptist Church, with burial following at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Betty O. Verdin

LIBERTY — Betty Owens Verdin, 70, of 6 Pinewood Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at her residence.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Joe Owens and Vera Moore Owens Mooney. She was retired from KEMET Electronics and was a member of Williamston Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Davison of Manning; two sisters, Lynn Owens of the home and Trudy Horton of Greenville; two brothers, William Mooney of the home and Victor Mooney of Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren, Megan McGowan, J.T. Davison, Katelyn Davison and Tabatha Scott; and five great-grandchildren, Nolan McGowan, Gavin McGowan, Braylen Ballard, Isaac Vega and Eli Vega.

A memorial service for Ms. Verdin will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel.

Barbara Spann

LIBERTY — Barbara Crowe Spann, 80, of 534 Ruhamah Road, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at the Cottingham Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, she was the widow of Charles E. Spann Jr. and a daughter of the late William Hubert and Mary Jane Porter Crowe.

She was retired from E.C.P. after 30 years of service and was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Kim Churchwell Repokis of Liberty; a son-in-law, Travis Dean Broughton of Kerversville, N.C.; a sister, Brenda Edwards of Piedmont; four grandchildren, Jacob Repokis (Chelsey), Shannon Repokis, Shelby Broughton and Abbie Broughton; a great-grandchild, Eli Repokis; three stepdaughters, Jennifer Garlow, Linda Spann and Vonnie Spann; and a stepson, Charlie Spann.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Traci Churchwell Broughton.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Spann will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:30-1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.

EASLEY — Margie “Lynne” Hodges Jordan, 64, of North Rhome Court, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., she was a daughter of the late William and Margie Bannister Hodges.

Lynne loved her Lord and her family and enjoyed the company of her cats.

Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Thomas Dennis Jordan of the home; her children, Tommy Jordan and Jennifer Doherty, both of Pickens, and Angel Hendrix of Greenville; grandchildren, Austin, Keara, Kaileigh, Jenna and Chris; sisters, Sharon Turner of Anderson and Cathy Scarboro of Pickens; brothers, Kevin and Daniel Hodges, both of Anderson; brothers- and sisters-in-law, John and Susan Zes of Sebring, Fla. and Chuck and Dene Carlisle of Simpsonville; and a sister-in-law, Judy Hester of Greenville.

A gathering of friends and family was held on Nov. 2 at the home of Debbie Jameson.

Billy Murphree

LIBERTY — William James “Billy” Murphree, 39, of 104 Porter Road, died on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Linda Sanders Murphree of Liberty and the late William Franklin Murphree. Billy loved the outdoors, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his fiancé, Jessica Dawn Meyer of the home; his daughter, Mackenzie Jane Murphree of the home; two sisters, Belinda McBride of Liberty and Debbie Harden (David) of Liberty; and his niece and nephew, Megan and Ethan McBride.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Murphree were held Nov. 4 at Enon Baptist Church, with burial following at the Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery.
