EASLEY — Judy Cantrell Godfrey, 71, of 504 East Second Avenue, died, Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Coke Wesley and Vera McQueen Cantrell. Mrs. Godfrey retired as a registered nurse and was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of the SC Chapter of Lupus Foundation.

Surviving are her husband, James Ray Godfrey, Jr., of the home; two sons, James Ray Godfrey, III , and wife, Sandra, George Mackey Godfrey, all of Easley; four grandchildren, James Ray Godfrey, IV, Amanda Gail Timmons, Elijah Godfrey and Abby Godfrey; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Mae Timmons, Wyatt Earl Timmons and James Ray Godfrey, V.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Godfrey was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Cantrell, and by a sister, Ruby Reeves.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Cryptside services were held on Friday, Feb. 27, in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum of Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road in Easley.

SHARON ALBAN ELLIOTT

EASLEY — Mrs. Sharon Alban “Sherry” Elliott, 72, wife of the late Robert Bruce Elliott, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of the late David Edward and Eleanor Dorothy Constans Alban, Mrs. Elliott was a retired bookkeeper and of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are a son, David Edward Broseus of Sheridan, Ark.; two daughters, Nancy Jan Murphy and Constans Gordon (Scott), all of Easley; a brother, Charles David Alban of Venice, Fla.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

TONY LEON MCALISTER

CENTRAL — Tony Leon McAlister, 67, husband of Carolyn Lusk McAlister, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Mr. McAlister was a native of the Kings Grove community in Pickens County. He was a son of the late Rev. S.T. McAlister and Rhoda Mae Orr McAlister. He was an ordained minister and a member of New Beginnings Baptist. Mr. McAlister was a disabled Vietnam War veteran, serving our country from 1966-1968. He received the Purple Heart for his distinguished service.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by four sons, Bruce (Alicia) of West Union; Adam McAlister of the home; Michael (Tandy) of Toccoa, Ga.; Samuel (Tasha) of Six Mile; brother, Thomas McAlister of Central; three sisters, Mildreed Major of Ocala, Fla..; Gladys Evatt and Frances Lusk both of Greenville; 11 grandchildren and four great-grand children.

He was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Frank and Edward McAlister.

A memorial service was held at New Beginnings Baptist Church, at 260 Gin Shoals Road in Six Mile.

TILMON HOOPER

EASLEY — Tilmon Perry Hooper, 91, of 105 Townsend Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at his home.

Born in Greenville County, a son of the late Conat Clifford and Eliza Owens Hooper, Mr. Hooper retired from the Platt Saco-Lowell and was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church. He was also a Mason, Shriner and a volunteer fireman.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Mann Hooper; a son, Kenny Perry Hooper; five daughters, Linda Marchbanks, Eleanor Sanders (Jerry), Cathy Phillips (Ronnie), Patsy Medlin (William) and Martha Holliday (Larry); a sister, Lonella Wike; a son-in-law Bobby Mauldin (Jolyn); 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hooper was predeceased by a son, Clifford Eugene Hooper, by a daughter, Shirley Mauldin, a son-in-law, Ronny Marchbanks, a daughter-in-law, Annette Hooper, a brother, Wallace Hooper and by a grandson, Scott Medlin.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, at Jones Avenue Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

CARRIE LEE LEWIS

PICKENS — Carrie Lee Cassell Lewis, 90, widow of Lester Jacob Lewis, died on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Robert and Bertha Cantrell Cassell. She was a homemaker and well known as a baker of cakes and pies, both for individuals and restaurants. She was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church.

Surviving are sons, Jacob Lee Lewis (Marilyn) of Pickens and Steve Robert Lewis (Kathy) of Easley and daughters, Patricia Ann Thompson (Terry) of Easley and Nancy Gilstrap (Donnie) of Pickens, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Brothers include Clifton Cassell and Cartee Cassell and sisters, Christine Lewis and Cleon Meece.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Gilstrap, a great-grandson, Roper Crowe, sisters, Corrine Edens and Clessie Rea Gravely and a brother, Carmon Cassell.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb 28, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

PAUL J. BLACKSTON

EASLEY — Paul James Blackston, 95, of Hamilton Street, husband of the late Lydia Anderson Blackston, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late John Mack and Bettie Cater Blackston, Mr. Blackston retired from Life of Georgia Insurance Company after 22 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and treasurer of the Men’s Bible Class.

Surviving are two sons, Louis H. Blackston (Maria) of Orlando, Fla., and Carl H. Blackston (Linda) of Easley; seven grandchildren, Chris Clark (Dave), Cindy Whittemore (David), Cheryl Little (Sam), Carla Romero (Johnatan), Rachel Litte (Bill), Selena Blackston and Jeffrey Blackston, and seven great-grandchildren, Noah and Chloe Clark, Matthew Whittemore, Stone and Zoeleigh Little and Angelica and Alex Blackston.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Blackston was predeceased by a son, Melvin D. Blackstone, a brother, Roscoe Blackston, and three sisters, Essie Ross, Annie Mae Nix and Louise Roach.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. March 2 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Seniors of Calvary Hill Baptist Church served as Escort of Honor.

MELVIN POSEY

LIBERTY — Melvin Woodrow Posey, 88, formerly of Anderson Highway, died March 2, 2015, at Countryside Village in Easley.

Born in Liberty, he was the widower of Rachel Rebecca Roberts Posey and a son of the late Walter and Lucy Smith Posey. He was retired from Woodside Mills and was a lifetime member of Golden Grove Wesleyan Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a brother-in-law, John Hunter of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Posey and Lucille Hunter, and two brothers, Raymond Paul Posey and Walter Posey, Jr.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Posey will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

SHARON LEE WHITTEN

GREENVILLE — Sharon Lee Whitten, 75, of Greenville died March 1, 2015.

Born in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Juanita Hampton Boggs. Sharon was retired from the US Postal Service, and was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

Surviving are six children, Robert Whitten of Greenville, Beth Whitten (Deb Reese) of Petersburg Va., Ragan Marling of Easley, Stan Whitten (Lisa) of Easley, Nita Trammell (Dean) of Liberty, and Dana Whitten (Nickki) of Easley; and one sister, Beverly Cureton of Central. She was “Shama” to 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial mass will be held at noon Friday, March 6, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anthony of Padua Endowment fund.

Stewart Pitts

Six Mile — James Stewart Pitts, 51, of Six Mile, passed away Feb. 25, 2015.

Born May 31, 1963, in Mobile, Ala., Stewart was a graduate of Furman University. He was formerly employed with Eagle Business Solutions for 20 years and was the cofounder of Six Mile Properties, LLC. He was a member of First Baptist Church Greenville.

Surviving are his parents, Dr. James M. and Nancy Stewart Pitts; his wife, Kelley Ellison Pitts; his children, Lillian “Lilli” Stewart Pitts and Colton James Carey Pitts; his brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan and Jackie Pitts and their children Will and Jon Walker; and his maternal grandmother, Lillian Cook Stewart.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 10 a.m. in the Charles Ezra Daniel Chapel at Furman University. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Springwood Cemetery.
