Easley — Sarah Lynne Freeman Hammond, 45, of Edgemont Street, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of Evelyn Gillespie Freeman and the late James Malcolm Freeman, Lynne was a radiologic technician and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a sister, Beth Freeman Miller (Robert) of Piedmont, and two nephews, Matthew and Chandler Miller.

Ralph Otis Brezeale

Pickens — Ralph Otis Brezeale, 87, died Monday, April 6, 2015, at his home.

Mr. Brezeale was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Sheriff Washington and Mary Elizabeth Morgan Brezeale.

Ralph was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Toni Brezeale Ballenger (Bob) of Pickens; two sons, Tim Brezeale of Greenville and Scott Brezeale (Kathy) of Pickens; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Flora Mae McAlister of Pickens.

Mr. Brezeale was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sarah Farmer, and three brothers, Ray Brezeale, Grady Brezeale and Horace Brezeale.

Funeral services were held at the Dillard Funeral Home Chapel on April 9. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

Johanna J. McGlothlin

Easley — Johanna Brakebill Jett McGlothlin, 67, of Pinnacle Lane, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at her home.

Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Ms. McGlothlin was a daughter of the late Richard Burch Jett Jr. and the late Beulah Ruth Brakebill Jett. She received her B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Tennessee in 1969, where she also received her J.D. in 1984. In law school, Johanna was a member of the Order of the Coif.

Like many of her colleagues, Johanna came to the law as her second profession. She worked as a teacher in both the primary and secondary schools of Buchanan, Va. and in Cumberland County, N.C. In 1980, Johanna returned to East Tennessee to pursue a long-standing goal of becoming a lawyer, which she did while raising two small children on her own.

Upon graduation from law school, Johanna associated with the law firm of Arnett, Draper and Hagood, where she became a partner in 1991. She joined Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) in 1984, was a member of KBA Board of Governors, Treasurer; President-Elect 1995; President 1996. Ms. McGlothlin was also a member of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) where she was a Member of Commission on Women and Minorities in the Profession; American Bar Association (ABA), Member of Hamilton Burnet Inns of Court for five years; Associate General Counsel to TBA-Since 1994. She was instrumental in the formation of the KBA “Minorities in the Law” Committee in 1990, which was charged with encouraging minority law students and lawyers to successfully pursue legal careers within the public and private sector of the Knoxville legal community. After retiring from Arnett, Draper and Hagood in 2000, she worked from 2002 until 2006 at the Legal Aid Society of East Tennessee. In 1996, she received the YMCA Tribute to Women in Business and Government.

Mrs. McGlothlin was a member of Easley First United Methodist Church. She was a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. Johanna was an avid reader, and she enjoyed socializing with family and friends, but her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are two daughters, Julia McGlothlin Stogoski (Eric) of Washington, D.C., and Anna McGlothlin Goodwin (Eric) of Easley; a brother, Richard Burch Jett III (Nancy) of Powell, Tenn.; a sister, Julia Jett Reedy (Allen) of Madisonville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Julia Elizabeth Goodwin, Sally Shuler Goodwin, John Charles Stogoski, Samuel Thomas Stogoski, and Anna Theresa Stogoski.

Memorial services were held on April 11 at Easley First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Rodney Powell officiating.

Larry Eugene Smith

Easley — Larry Eugene Smith, 81, husband of the late Naomi Lyda Smith went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at McCall Hospice House.

Mr. Smith was born in Pickens County, the son of late Dalphne Willie Hiles Smith and Floyd Walter Smith.

Mr. Smith loved to build and fly remote control airplanes. He enjoyed motorcycles and computer games and also loved his family dearly.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include one daughter; Sandy Turner (Tony) of Easley, two brothers; Robert “Bob” Smith (Ruby) of Easley, Richard Smith (Vickie) of Easley, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife, parents and two brothers, Jimmy F. Smith and Jackie Smith.

Graveside services were held April 10 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Duncan Gilliland

Easley — Mrs. Vivian Geneva Duncan Gilliland, 74, of 142 Adger Road, Easley, loving wife of Joe Gilliland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital – Downtown.

Mrs. Gilliland was born in Six Mile on November 25, 1940, to the late Albert and Selma Garrett Duncan. She worked in the textile industry and loved to shop, her flowers and her gardens. She was an excellent cook and loved her family dearly.

In addition to her loving husband of 56 years, she is survived by two daughters; Donna Davis (Wayne), of Liberty; and Tonya McReynolds (Patrick), of Easley; a grandson, Cory Alexander McReynolds of Easley; two brothers; The Rev. James Duncan (Aileen) of Greenwood; The Rev. Bobby Duncan (Emma Lee) of Six Mile; and a sister; Rita Jean Bryant of Easley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers; Marvin Duncan and Jimmy Duncan; and two sisters; Brenda Barker and Eleannor June Duncan.

Funeral services were held on April 11, 2015, in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Downtown, with the Rev. Bobby Duncan and the Rev. Scott Davis officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

Margaret Rampey Nations

Central — Margaret Rampey Nations, 73, of Central, passed away on April 9, 2015, at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, N.C.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Arnold Monroe and Katharine Rackley Rampey.

Surviving are two daughters, Lynn Nations of Charlotte, N.C., and Karen Bryant (Terry) of Six Mile; a son, Chris Nations of Six Mile; a sister, Ruth R. Evans of Central; two brothers, James D. Rampey (Sarah) of Central, and Bruce E. Rampey (Janna) of Greenville; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on April 11 at Westview Cemetery on Old Norris Road in Liberty.

Bobby Joe Lawing

Pickens — Bobby Joe Lawing, 81, husband of Fairy Moser Lawing, passed from this life on Thursday, April 9, 2015.

Mr. Lawing was born in Maiden, N.C., a son of the late Joe Grover and Grace Flona Curlee Lawing. He was a graduate of Maiden High School and Limestone College. Mr. Lawing was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was retired from Ryobi in Pickens as a supervisor and was a member of Pickens First Baptist Church where he was a scout leader, Bible Drill leader and participated in other children’s activities of the church. His favorite job was substitute teaching and working with children.

Mr. Lawing was a member of the American Legion and he was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Fairy Moser Lawing of the home, sons, Joey Lawing and his wife, Marigale, of Birmingham, Ala., and Lee Lawing and his partner, Clint Kendrick, of Seattle, Wash., a granddaughter, Lindsey Lawing, and a grandson, Cole Hendricks.

A memorial service was held on April 11 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with Mr. Jeff Haley officiating. A private burial was held.

Martha Childers

Six Mile — Martha Bagwell Childers, 87, of 4706 Six Mile Highway, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2015, at Brookdale at Central.

Born in Six Mile, she was the widow of Tom Childers and a daughter of the late Jay and Pauline Farmer Young.

She was a member of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Bagwell and Sheilah Bagwell, both of Six Mile; two sons, Tony Bagwell of Easley and Benny Bagwell of Six Mile; four sisters, Eunice Pilgrim, Jean Reeves, Carolyn Wade, and Varina Turner; three brothers, Joe Dean, Coy and Gary Young; four grandchildren, Andy Bagwell, Kelly Page, Jennifer Kelly, and Zane Bagwell; and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mansell Bagwell, and two brothers, Bud and Tommy Young.

Graveside services to honor the life of Mrs. Childers were held on April 11 at Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Shelba Powell Couch

Pickens ­— Shelba Powell Couch of Pickens, professional musician and educator, passed to the bosom of Jesus following an extended illness in the early morning hours Friday, April 10, 2015, surrounded by her three children, to whom she had devoted her very being with love only surpassed by her faith in God.

She was a 1964 graduate of Furman University, where she studied music education followed by 40 years of musical influence in and out of the classroom. She shared her passion with the arts daily with more than 100,000 students of varying ages throughout Pickens County and Cumberland County, Tenn. She accompanied her husband, the Rev. H.C. Couch Sr., of Pickens, through 50 years of pastoral ministry-accompanying him in ministering to the members of the churches in Pickens County and Cumberland County, Tenn., accompanying him on the piano for more than 15,000 church services — not including additional funeral, wedding, and professional concert performances and teaching countless children’s, youth and adult choirs.

Born to the Rev. Johnnie Powell and Lois Powell, both deceased residents of Easley, her love for music began and was encouraged at an early age by her parents. Her prodigious progress turned her into a pianist for revivals, services and tent meetings which still in elementary school joined in voice by her surviving sisters Mildred P. Murrell, of Easley, and Joyce P. Martin, of Auburn, Ala.

An avid reader, she passed her passion for the arts and education to her three surviving children: H. Cleve Couch, Jr. (Ashley), of Easley, Christie Marie Couch and Crystal Couch Pitrois of Greenville. They in turn, passed on the passion for the fine arts and commitment to education to her five surviving grandsons: Zachary C. Couch, L. Marc Pitrois, Ethan E. Couch, Christian W. Couch, and Julilen J. Pitrois.

Mrs. Couch’s celebration of life service was held on April 12 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Powdersville Road, with burial following in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Betty Jo Shirley

Central — Betty Jo Porter Shirley, 80, of 639 Taylor Street, died Friday, April 10, 2015. at the home of her daughter, Tina Shirley.

Born in Cateechee, she was the widow of J.T. Shirley and a daughter of the late Robert and Mary Morgan Porter. She was a member of Liberty Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Tina Shirley of Central and Pheobe Rackley of Seneca; a brother, Jimmy Porter; a granddaughter, Felicia Richardson; and a great-granddaughter, Haley Ann Richardson.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Moore, Shirley Gillespie and Judy Bailey; and a brother, Willie Porter.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Shirley were held April 13 at Liberty Church of God. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central.

Loyd J. Breazeale

Pickens — Loyd J. Breazeale, 91, of 262 Concord Church Road in Pickens, died Friday, April 10, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Greenville, he was the widower of Marie Reinhardt Breazeale and a son of the late Eugene and Hallie Jones Breazeale. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He loved farming, gardening, woodworking and doing all types of yard work. He previously was the owner of Community Laundry and Dry Cleaning but later retired from Michelin as head of security. He was also a longtime member of Secona Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Annarose Garrett of Pickens; three granddaughters, Eve Sheriff, Angie Dorr and Terri Owens; and his great-grandchildren, Haley, Mark, Katie and Cassie.

He was predeceased by his great-grandson, Kyle Brannock, who was like a son to him. In addition, he was predeceased by a son, Allen Breazeale; a brother, Carl Breazeale; and his great-granddaughters, Casey and Courtney Brannock.

Funeral services for Mr. Breazeale were held on April 13 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Richard “Carl” Rampey

Central — Richard “Carl” Rampey, 80, of 105B Maple View Court, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Regency Hospital of Greenville.

Born in Central, he was a son of the late John McDuffie and Ressie Herd Rampey. He served his country in the U.S. Army and later retired from American Enka. He was an avid softball player and also served on Central City Council and was the Police Commissioner of Central as well. He was a member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are his daughter, Donna Duffie (Scott) of Liberty; his son, Michael Rampey (Cindy) of Greenville; three grandchildren, Katherine Duffie, Tyler Rampey and Keaton Rampey; a great grandchild, John Keaton Rampey; and his wife of 25 years, the mother of his children, Vivian Rampey of Liberty.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters; and four brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Rampey were held on April 14 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at Westview Cemetery.

Seth Lyman Eckard

Easley — Mr. Seth Lyman Eckard, 81, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Manna Health and Rehab.

Seth was born in Pomaria on Jan. 27, 1934, to the late Rev. Glenn and Ruby Sandel Eckard. He graduated from Furman University, majoring in finance. During college, Seth enjoyed acting in the play “Unto These Hills” in Cherokee, N.C. He retired from General Electric’s finance department in the 1990s. Mr. Eckard was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War.

Seth is survived by a daughter, Bonny Ferguson (David), of Summerville; a special companion and caregiver, Sandy Lamberson of Easley; seven grandchildren, Gwen, Paul, Seth, Cody, Angel, Hunter and Morgan; two daughters-in-law, Tanya and Beth; a brother, Glenn Eckard of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and a sister, Elaine Cloud of Eugene, Ore.

In addition to his parents, Seth was preceded in death by two sons, Theron and Jeffrey Eckard.

Funeral services were held on April 14 at St. Matthias Lutheran Church in Easley. Entombment followed in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642.

Carol J. Thibodeau

Pickens ­— Carol Jeanne Ristau Thibodeau, 78, widow of William E. Thibodeau, passed from this life on Friday, April 10, 2015.

Carol was born in Goodridge, MN a daughter of the late Gustav Adolf Ristau and Esther Amy Sabo. She was retired as a medical transcriptionist and she was a Lutheran.

Survivors include her daughter, Shelley Jeanne Doomey of Pickens, sons, Russel Jack Gosnell of Escondido, Calif., Steven Scott Gosnell of Oceanside, Calif., and Eric Allen Gosnell of Vista, Calif., along with her step-children Janice Davis of Summit N.J., Pamela McFatridge of Fort Worth Texas, and Theresa Eisinger of Glendive Mont. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ryan Allen Doomey, Nicholas William Doomey, Cory Allen Gosnell, and Erica Brea Gosnell, along with five stepchildren and two great stepchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in The Veterans Gardens of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.
