Arthur Garner

Easley — Arthur K. “Papa” Garner, 80, of 101 Wallace Drive, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Anderson, a son of the late Andrew and Myrtle Lou Anthony Garner, Arthur was a graduate of Boys High School in Anderson and retired from the maintenance department of Robinson Funeral Home. He was a member of Dacusville Church of God of Prophecy.

Surviving are two daughters, Tina Louise Garner and Rebecca Ann Hayes; a brother, Robert Garner; two sisters, Sarah Rice and Myrtle Ruth Mosley; granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh Contreras, Natosha Lynn Maximo, Kendra Denise Negrete, Brandy Nechole Hayes and Jessica Noel Hayes; great-grandchildren, Jacobe Melvin Contreras, Kayla Christina Contreras, Brayden Contreras, Eden Martin Negrete, Yarely Anaid Negrete, Andres Maximo, Isaiah Maximo, Izlyn Lilyana Contreras, Exander Mael Negrete, Yulizza Aylen Maximo, Dylan Axel Maximo; and all his adopted grandchildren young and old.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by a brother, Tommy Garner.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Christian Fellowship in Dacusville.

Burial followed in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery.

George Bill Williams

Six Mile — George Bill Williams, 77, husband of Louise Anthony Williams, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Williams was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Gus and Tea Aiken Williams and grandson of the late Artie Aiken. He was retired from the Gayley Plant of Milliken Company and a U.S. Veteran. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Anthony Williams of the home, step-son, Tony Turner (Joan) of Pickens and a brother, J. Phil Williams (Shelby) of Greenville. Also surviving are nieces, Dr. Sherry Williams and Cindy W. Appleton (Tom).

In addition to his parents and grandmother, Mr. Williams was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Gary Williams.

Funeral services were 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Dillard Funeral Home in the funeral home chapel. Burial was in the Veteran’s Garden of Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Jimmy Bryant

Easley — Jimmy McDaniel Bryant, 79, of 143 Nora Avenue, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 at his home.

Born in Pickens County, the son of the late James Harmon Bryant and Codie Moore Bryant, Mr. Bryant retired from the Elljean Plant of Alice Manufacturing Company and was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church. He served with both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Kelley Bryant of the home; a son, Tim Bryant of Easley; a daughter, Tammie Schneider of Easley; two step-daughters, Tammy Kelley of Pickens, and Sharon Raines of Easley; a brother, Joseph “Bicky” Bryant of Virginia; and five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bryant was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Anne Bryant and by seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Nell Davis Patton

Easley — Mrs. Nell Davis Patton, 96, wife of the late James P. Patton, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at her home.

Born in Pickens County July 26, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James Monroe and Mildred McAdams Davis, Mrs. Patton was a 1935 graduate of Dacusville High School where she was valedictorian of her senior class. In 1939 she received her B.S. degree in elementary education from Asheville Teacher’s College. She spent more than 45 years teaching in the Pickens and Greenville County Schools. Mrs. Patton was a lifetime and oldest living member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Nancy King Sunday School Class and the WMU.

Born to Mrs. Patton were two daughters, Nancy Patton Simmons and Betty Patton Finley. She has four grandchildren, James Finley, Bethany Wilbanks, David Simmons, and Chris Simmons; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Mrs. Patton was predeceased by one brother and four sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Turner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Escort of Honor was the Nancy King Sunday School Class.

Jerry Cook

Easley — Jerry A. “Uncle Jerry” Cook, 70, of 104 Bentcreek Court, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Morganfield, Ky., a son of the late Virgil I. and Bessie Hall Cook, Jerry was employed with Jon Hall Automotive Group in Daytona Beach, Fla. and a member of Beacon Baptist Church in Daytona Beach.

Surviving are two brothers, Roy Cook of Uniontown, Ky., and Tommy Cook of Adrian, Mich.; four sisters, Agnes Ritchey of Daytona, Fla., Nell Householder and Connie Cook, both of Morganfield, Ky., and Mary Humphries of Tyler, Texas. He is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews, and two very special friends, Mike and Susan Holcombe, Easley.

For his last year, Jerry lived with his niece and her husband, Cheryl and Randy Abrams of Easley.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Jennie Merck

Cateechee — Jennie Patterson Merck, 88, of N. Garrett Street, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at the home of her daughter in Six Mile.

Born in Oconee County, she was the widow of Lawrence C. “Boots” Merck and a daughter of the late G.C. and Daisy Dean Patterson. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Cateechee Garden Club. She was also a longtime member of Cateechee Baptist Church where she served as the church organist for over 50 years and was a member of the Helen Frazier Sunday School Class.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Melton (Al) of Liberty and Carol Holliday (Norman) of Six Mile; a sister, Mildred Merck of Six Mile; three brothers, Russell Patterson of Florida, Winfred Patterson of Williamston and Dennis Patterson of Liberty; four grandchildren, Stacy Powell (Anson), Jason Melton (Jessica), Craig Holliday and Chase Holliday; great grandchildren, Luke and Landen Powell, Jacob Melton and soon to be born, Jonathan Melton.

In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by three sisters, Jessie Thompson, Mozelle Smith and Grace Chapman; and four brothers, Hoyt, Cecil, Clayton and Hugh Patterson.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Merck were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cateechee Baptist Church. Burial was at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Sydney L. Moore

Pickens — Sydney Lee Moore, 68, husband of Joan Alexander Moore, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014.

Sydney was born in Pickens County, a son of Flora Dillard Moore and the late Clifton Moore. He was retired from NCR/AT&T in Liberty and he was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Moore of the home, daughters, Deana Moore of Lexington and Lora Stephanchick of LaGrange, Ky. Also surviving are granddaughters, Sidney and Sarah Stephanchick, a brother, David Moore of Liberty, and sisters, Joan Renaud of Liberty and Janet Sullivan of Piedmont.

In addition to his father, Sydney was preceded in death by two infant daughters and a granddaughter, LeAne Stephanchick.

A memorial service was 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Dillard Funeral Home in the funeral home chapel.

Millicent M. Jennings

Pickens — Millicent M. Jennings, 57, of Pickens, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014.

Millicent was born April 18, 1957 in Oconee County the daughter of Jasper and Lois Jennings of Pickens. She graduated with honors from Pickens High School in 1975. She was employed with Cornell Dubilier.

Millicent is survived by her parents, Jasper and Lois Jennings of Pickens, and four brothers, Neal Jennings (Janice Levasseur) of Marietta, Brent Jennings of Charlotte, N.C., John Jennings of Easley, and David Jennings (Leshia) of Pickens.

A memorial service was 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Dillard Funeral Home in the funeral home chapel.

David W. Spearman

Pickens — David Walker Spearman, 77, husband of Sue Gillespie Spearman, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at his home.

David was born in Pickens County, a son of the late William and Margie Brezeale Spearman. He was retired from Millikin Co. and later retired from Synergy Gas Co. David attended Northside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sue Spearman, sisters, Doris Gilstrap (Clyde) and Darlene Farmer (Bill) both of Pickens. Also surviving are special friends that felt like children to David, Philip Black, Cindy Kreitz, Audrey Reiger, Caleb Stanley, and Andy Kreitz.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Spearman.

Funeral services were 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens in the funeral home chapel. Entombment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Gerald Rackley

Easley — Gerald Davis Rackley, 95, of Easley died peacefully Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Mr. Rackley was a son of the late Jule Nathaniel and Martha Shuler Rackley.

Survivors include his son, Heyward Jones (Becky) of Smyrna, Ga. and his caregivers and nephew James and Patsy Rackley of Easley.

He was preceded in death by brothers James Curtis Rackley and Harold Rackley and a sister, Ruth Stokes. Mr. Rackley was twice married, first to the late Eddie Cassell Rackley and then to the late Kathleen Robinson Rackley.

Graveside services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Cora Lee Nix Lark

Pickens – Cora Lee Nix Lark, 99, wife of the late James Dewey Lark, died, Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014.

Mrs. Lark was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Ed and Nancy Estar Crenshaw. She was retired from Sangamo Electric and had formerly worked at Kent Manufacturing Co. Mrs. Lark was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Batson (Carl) of Pickens, and Nancy Looper (Frank M. Jr.) of Dacusville , and Beverly Willimon (Phil) of Powdersville, sons,

James Marcus Lark (Patty) of Greenwood and Larry Joe Lark (Judy) of Clover. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren and a brother, Alton Nix of Athens, Ga.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lark was preceded in death by a number of brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens in the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Central — Priscilla Rollins Sutherland, 37, of 946 Norris Highway, died Saturday, August 15, 2014 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Seneca she was a daughter of Marion and Vickie Branyon Rollins.

Surviving in addition to her mother and father are her husband, Jason E. Sutherland of the home; a son, AJ Kelley of California; a step son, Cody Sutherland of Liberty; a sister, Leslie Rollins of Central; two brother in laws, Shane and James Sutherland; her uncle and aunt, Blair and Pam Bethke; three cousins, Kevin, Jarrod, and Chris Branyon.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Tabatha Renee Kelley.

Memorial services to honor Priscilla’s life will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the mortuary.

Dorothy Miller

Easley — Mrs. Dorothy Bishop Miller, 83, wife of the late Carl Jackson Miller, died Sunday Aug. 17, 2014 at her home.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late J.B. Bishop and Nanny Bell Bishop Pate, Mrs. Miller was formerly employed with Stone Manufacturing Company, and was a lifetime member of Georges Creek Baptist Church where she taught Children’s Sunday school ministry for 21 years. She was also active in the WMU and Joy Club.

Surviving are six children, Brenda Sewell (George), Charlotte Miller, David Miller (Carolyn), Eugene Miller (Sherry), Margaret Santos (Tony), Larry Miller (Sharon) and her niece-daughter, Jeanean Beeco (Rayburn); two brothers, James Bishop (Edith), and Fred Bishop (Catherine); three sisters, Bessie Faye Bridges, Eloise Brown and Ruth Leslie (Randy); 16 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Miller was predeceased by a granddaughter, Melissa McDonald, who passed away July 28, 1974, by a brother, Irel Bishop and his wife Sandy, by a sister, Sarah Ann Padgett and by her step-father, Ned Pate.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Georges Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Ruth W. Cantrell

Easley — Ruth Carroll Wehner Cantrell, 93, of 109 Park Drive, wife of the late David DeVore Cantrell, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Greenville, Mrs. Cantrell was a daughter of the late Otto John and Jennie Lee Greene Wehner. She was a graduate of Greenville High School and was the former owner and operator of Carroll Lee Dress Shop. Mrs. Cantrell was a member of First United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Wesley Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. She was a long time Sunday School Teacher.

She was active in West End Elementary PTA, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and she was a member of Child Study Club.

Surviving are a son, David DeVore Cantrell, Jr. (Linda) of Easley; two daughters, Sallie Lee Cantrell of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Susan Cantrell Little (Jim) of Taylors; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Little, Michelle Little, Tommy Jones, Christian Jones, Chad Jones, Eric Cantrell, Adam Cantrell, Abby Cantrell, and Heather Cantrell; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Cantrell was predeceased by four sisters, Mary, Jennie Lee, Maude, and Margaret.

Funeral services were 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Westview Cemetery, Easley.

William “Ike” Littleton

Norris — William Isaac “Ike” Littleton, 96, of 307 Robinson Bridge Road, Central, died on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 at Majesty Health and Rehab in Easley.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Cora Mae Gilstrap and William Isaac Littleton, Sr.  He was a retired textile employee and a member of Central First Baptist Church.

He loved gardening and baseball.

Mr. Littleton is survived by his daughter, Shelby Thompson and husband, Herb of Central; grandson, Greg and wife, Kim of Central; great-grandsons, Justin and Zeke Thompson of Central; great-great granddaughter, Delilah Thompson of Central; brothers, James R. Littleton of Central and J.D. Littleton of Liberty; and sister, Mary L. Waters of Easley.

Ike was predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Iona Burgess Littleton; great grandson, Isaiah Thompson; brother, Jack Littleton; and sister, Clara Mae Pilgrim.

Funeral services were 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Qualkinbush officiating.  Burial followed in Memory Gardens.

The family would like to personally thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Baptist Easley Hospital, Majesty Health and Rehab and the staff of ARK Hospice for their loving care and support of our Dad.
