Six Mile schedules community watch event

SIX MILE — Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Six Mile officials have scheduled a community watch meeting for 7 p.m. Monday at town hall.

The meeting, which is open to all residents of the Six Mile area, will feature tips and presentations from sheriff’s office officials, as well as handouts provided by law enforcement.

A similar program was held in Dacusville last year, and officials hope to replicate the success of that program in Six Mile.

Pickens County sheriff Rick Clark will be on hand for the meeting and said Six Mile is the next community where law enforcement are looking for residents’ help in curbing crime.

“This program trains volunteers on how to be the eyes and ears of their community,” Clark said. “We need partners in the community, and this is a great way for us to work with our community in fighting crime. We are limited in the number of deputies we have on the street, and having a community trained to be on the lookout for crime is invaluable for the sheriff’s office and the community.

“This is the next step in our increased community involvement, and we look forward to very positive results from this new partnership in the Six Mile area.”

Six Mile Town Council member James Atkinson said officials are hoping for a large turnout at the meeting.

“There is no doubt of the importance of a community watch program in terms of being the eyes and ears of a community in terms of citing unusual activity to notify law enforcement,” he said. “No amount of law enforcement presence in any community or on any street can outweigh the effectiveness of an informed and alert community watch program, as residents who know their street and their area are the best line of defense against unwelcome activities.

“This should be a very informative program for everyone attending. We certainly hope for and are planning for a large number of attendees from the entire Six Mile area.”
