Winter art classes planned at Pickens County Museum

PICKENS — The Pickens County Museum of Art announced this week that registration is now open for the winter studio art sessions for youngsters and adults.

Renee Gillespie will be the instructor for the two classes.

The winter is a great time to work in the studio exploring all the possibilities at your fingertips when it comes to sketching, painting and creating one.

Classes begin January 13.

Youth Art Class (Ages 12-16) with Renee Gillespie — Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 13, 20, 27, Feb. 3, 17 and 24.

This six-week session being held in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio will instruct youngsters in the use of acrylic paint to learn the art of marbleizing. Marbleized papers were primarily used in bookbinding but also have many other uses. Both traditional and contemporary marbleizing patterns and techniques will be used during this six-week class to create a variety of items with paper and cloth. Students will need to wear art class clothes or bring a smock or apron to class. Art supplies are included in tuition fee. Tuition for the class is $88, or $78 for museum members. Pre-registration is required. Tuition must be paid prior to the first class. There will be no refunds on tuition after the start of the class. Class size is limited, so register today.

Adult Painting Class with Renee Gillespie — Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Jan. 13, 20, 27, Feb. 3, 17 and 24.

This six-week session being held in the Liz Smith-Cox Educational Studio is open to those who paint with acrylics or watercolors. Each student will choose the subject of their painting and will receive individual instruction at each class. Instruction will be based on the painter’s skill level. Novice painters may begin with basic painting exercises. Students will provide their own supplies. Supply list, if needed, will be given at first class. Tuition for the class is $88, or $78 for museum members. Pre-registration is required. Tuition must be paid prior to the first class. There will be no refunds on tuition after the start of the class.

Gillespie has a bachelor’s degree in art from Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and has also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently practicing the nearly lost art of miniature painting. Taking instruction from a member of England’s Royal Miniature Society, the oldest miniature society in the world, Gillespie has been learning the art and discipline in the European Mode. She also is gifted in Batik and natural dying. Her indigo-dyed cloth has been purchased by the Smithsonian Institution.

Tuition may be paid by cash, check or charge. Make check payable to the Pickens County Museum or call the Museum to use your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. Each class is designed and offered on a six-week session basis only, no individual selected week(s) option will be offered. Full tuition must be paid before first class session. Students will be notified if a class is cancelled or filled. If class is cancelled all tuition will be reimbursed to registered student. No tuition will be reimbursed after start date of the classes.
