AAA Carolinas: Gas cost up due to rising demand

PICKENS — With the help and generosity of its customers, the Save A Lot store at 529 Hampton Ave. in Pickens has donated more than 1,100 bags of much-needed, high-quality food to The Gleaning House.

US 123 wreck kills Greenville woman

LIBERTY — A Greenville woman died last week after her car struck a dump truck and then several trees on U.S. Highway 123 near Liberty.
Pickens County chief deputy coroner Andrew Wilson identified the victim as Sarah Marshall, 27, of Vantage Way.
The accident happened at 7:25 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, on U.S. 123 at mile marker 10, 2.1 miles south of Liberty, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol

• Veterans invited to American Legion
Veterans in the Liberty area are invited to the next meeting of American Legion Post 67 in Liberty.
The Legion meets on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Scout Hut, circle off North Palmetto Street. All veterans are invited.
• United Wesleyan to host fundraiser
The United Wesleyan Church, located at 738 Rice Road in Easley, will be having a fundraiser for the church’s Operation Christmas Child shoebox ministry.
The event is planned at Pizza Inn in Pickens from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. Those in attendance are asked to mention at check out that they are there for the fundraiser.
Clemson Downs donation
Clemson Downs contributed $1,500 to Tri-County Technical College’s Foundation to continue its support of the TCTC nursing program. The donation will support a future nurse as they continue their education at TCTC. Pack 51 planning Pinewood Derby
PICKENS — Cub Scout Pack 51 is inviting all area first responders to participate in the annual Pinewood Derby competition.
Emergency officials’ attendance will give Cub Scouts an opportunity to meet and engage with local first responders while enjoying a fun event.
The derby will take place on April 1 at the Pickens Amphitheater. Although the time is not yet finalized, the event will be in the morning, likely around 10 a.m., according to organizers.
The derby is an annual, family-oriented event focused on fun and good sportsmanship. Competition

PCSO: Man arrested after foot chase

CENTRAL — The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office says a man faces multiple charges, including escape, after a brief foot chase last week.
According to a news release, deputies with the sheriff’s office’s Community Action Team responded to a home in Central on Thursday in search of William Grover Bearden, wanted for outstanding arrest warrants.

Easley man faces charges after fight with deputies
EASLEY — An Easley man faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest, after an altercation with deputies earlier this month.
According to a Pickens County Sheriff’s Office release, deputies with the agency’s Community Action Team responded to an Easley home on Jan. 18 in search of Jeremy Charles Moore, who was wanted for outstanding arrest warrants.
Upon arrival, deputies saw Moore standing in the doorway of an outbuilding on the property, the release said.

Future growth brings worry about trash
EASLEY — While Pickens County has made progress with issues around the landfill and the county’s litter problem, some are concerned about the impact growth will have on trash.
At a recent Community Alliance for Sustainable Development meeting, speakers and attendees discussed concerns about the impact of large developments such as a proposed 1,268-home development at Lenhardt Road and Jim Hunt Road.
Resident Bill McKinney asked if any studies had been done on developments’ impact on trash and the county’s recycling centers.
