CFA comes to Pickens

On Monday, June 6, “Baby Cow” cut the ribbon on the Upstate Chick-fil-A food truck. The grand opening was held in Doodle Park at 409 E. Cedar Rock St. in Pickens. The food truck will be moving around to various locations in Pickens two to three days a week. The Pickens Chamber of Commerce will give local residents a heads up to the truck’s exact location when it’s in Pickens. Follow the chamber on Facebook @greaterpickenschamber. DWD principal takes district job

PICKENS — D.W. Daniel High School is will be looking for a new principal after the School District of Pickens County (SDPC) Board of Trustees selected Shannon Sharkey as the next Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Curriculum on Monday.

Sharkey, who has served SDPC in varying capacities, is currently the Principal at Daniel, but will assume her new role following the upcoming retirement of Sharon Huff at the end of June 2022.

Hagood Mill hosts folk music festival

PICKENS — Pickens County music fans are in luck, with the Hagood Mill Historic Site hosting an event highlighting the singer-songwriter titled,   the Americana Folk Festival on Saturday, June 18.

This music-filled day will include entertainment by Barrett Davis, Angela Easterling, Steve McGaha & Patrick Lark, and Ella & Mary.

Halfacre, County Council talk improving signage

DAR chapter holds annual awards meeting

 

COUNTY — Fort Prince George Chapter DAR members honored local students with awards at its annual awards meeting last month. The students’ family and teachers were there to honor their schools’ winners.

National Defender Committee chair Renee Castor presented this year’s winners of the DAR Good Citizen Award with a certificate and a medal. The winners were Carys Waddington of Easley High School, Breylen Cobb of Liberty High School

Library kicks off summer program

COUNTY — The Pickens County Library System recently announced the return of its annual summer reading program.

This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities.” The program began on June 6 and runs until July 31. All Pickens County residents were set to receive a postcard in the mail that included a summer reading log.

To complete the program, participants can choose to read 10 books, complete 10 activities or a combination of both options to equal 10. Once all 10 activities are completed, postcards can be returned to any library location. More postcards will be available at all library branches.

After completing the summer reading program, participants ages 17 and younger will receive an “Oceans of Possibilities” prize pack, as well as have their name entered into a drawing for more prizes. Adults who complete the summer reading program will receive a PCLS tote bag (while supplies last) and an entry into a drawing for prizes. Visit the library system website at pcls.fyi for a list of possible prizes.

The library will also have special performances all summer long, which will include musical theater, storytelling, crafts, live animal presentations and more.

Veterans in the Liberty area are invited to the next meeting of American Legion Post 67 in Liberty. The Legion meets on the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Scout Hut, circle off North Palmetto Street. All veterans are invited.
