Liberty — Mrs. Floycie Carroll Holliday, 97, wife of the late Woodrow W. Holliday, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Born in Jackson County, NC, a daughter of the late Rufus Newton and Emma Bryson Carroll, Mrs. Holliday retired from Easley Textiles and was a member of Smith Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Jason Holliday (Jean) of Liberty, and Rabon Holliday (Eleanor) of Easley; two daughters-in-law, Peggy and Lynda Holliday; ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Holliday was predeceased by a daughter, Judy Holliday; two sons, Preston Holliday and James Holliday; two brothers, John Carroll and James Warren Carroll; and a sister, Joycie Merck.

Funeral services were held on April 18 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in the Smith Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Manna Health and Rehab, for the love and care they provided to Mrs. Holliday.

Arthur Harrison Powell

Pickens — Arthur Harrison Powell, 88, husband of the late Katherine Klan Keiser Powell and Mamie Jo Williams went to be with the Lord Thursday April 16, 2015 at his home. Mr. Powell was born in Pickens County a son of the Hattie Mae Bearden Powell and Oscar Carroll Powell.

Mr. Powell was a past Worshipful Master with the Masonic Lodge. He loved singing and playing his guitar, he also loved and cherished his son Michael. He would often say “You are my buddy”. Mr. Powell loved his entire family.

Mr. Powell was a Veteran of the United States Navy.

Survivors include his son; Michael Powell of Pickens, one granddaughter; Samantha Mulliger and husband Kevin of Travelers Rest.

Claudia Frances Cooper

Pickens — Claudia Frances Cooper, age 66, wife of the late Willie Cooper, went to be with the Lord Friday April 17, 2015, at her home.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Gladys, Va., the daughter of the late Sarah Tomlin Banton and Howard Banton.

Survivors include two step daughters; Cindy Cooper Hall of Pickens, Diane Cooper McCall (Lee) of Six Mile, two brothers; Clyde Banton (Barbara) of Hampton, Va., Leslie Banton (Lavernia) of Newport, Va., seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on April 21at Dillard Funeral Home with a chapel service to following. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Mrs. Cooper was predeceased by her parents, husband, one step daughter; Lisa Ann Cooper, two sisters; Grace Banton Mason, Elizabeth Hudgins, and brother; Vernon Banton.

James A. Hendricks

Central — Mr. James Alton Hendricks, 85, husband of Frances Arnold Hendricks, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015, at Cottingham Hospice House, Seneca.

Born in Pickens County a son of the late Matthew Lattimore and Lillian Smith Hendricks, Mr. Hendricks was the retired owner and operator of James Hendricks Builders and a member of Kings Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 66 years, are three sons, Arnold Becker (Beth) of Boiling Springs, Rick Hendricks (Diane), and Ronnie Hendricks (Donna), all of Central; two daughters, Judy Taylor (Johnny) of Seneca, and Debbie Bell (Tommy) of Central; one sister, Hazel Patterson of Liberty; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hendricks was predeceased by three brothers, Leroy, John Ivy and Hubert Hendricks; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on April 16 at Kings Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Martha “Joan” Heaton

Easley — Mrs. Martha “Joan” Cheek Heaton, 76, wife of the late Melvin Eugene Heaton, Sr., passed away Friday, April 17, 2015, at her home.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late James Harold and Mildred Alene Greene Cheek, Mrs. Heaton retired from Platt Saco-Lowell and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Melvin Eugene “Pete” Heaton, Jr. (Deanna), and James Chuck Heaton (Paige), all of Easley; a daughter, Debbie Pelt (Billy) of Easley; a sister, Jean Finley (Charles) of Easley; ten grandchildren, Mitzi Burgess, Shane Heaton, Brandon Heaton, Stephanie McCoy, Meagan Heaton, Austin Cordell, Brady Cordell, Devin Greene, Kayla Brown and Lindsey Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Levi Heaton, Trenton King and Joselynn King.

Funeral services were held on April 19 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Harold (Harry) Lee Smith

Pickens — On April 16, 2015, Harold (Harry) Lee Smith, 76, the loving husband of Mary Ann Smith, went home to be with his Heavenly Father after an extended illness. From Spartanburg County, Harry was the son of the late Fred Lee Smith and Edith Delph Smith.

After graduating from high school in 1956, Harry joined the Air Force which set him on his path for a lifelong passion and talent in the electronics field. He worked for ITT in Maryland after leaving the military, and from there he went on to many years of self-employment with Radio Shack as an owner of retail stores in North and South Carolina.

In 1997, after his 25 years as a successful store owner, he and his wife retired to the lovely foothills of Pickens County, where his love of nature blossomed. He enjoyed backyard birding and vegetable gardening. He also enjoyed his daily workouts with friends at the YMCA.

Harry is already being missed by so many people whose lives he touched, not the least of which are his past employees who learned more about business from him than in any college course. He treated them like family with his style of tough love that was still always fair. His intelligence, business sense, and sharp wit are traits that will be discussed by those who loved him, for years to come.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of nearly 24 years, Mary Ann, his daughter, Linda (Jim) Colip, of Roanoke, Va., his son, Jeffrey Smith, of Little River, a step-daughter, Jennifer Ewan, of Asheville, N.C., and two grandsons, Grant Colip and Weston Colip. Harry was preceded in death by a son, Gerald (Jerry) Smith, of Florence.

He is also survived by four sisters and a brother: Lois Smith Hammett, of Spartanburg, Marj Smith Brown, of Mooresville, N.C., Bettie Smith Ramsey, of Gastonia, N.C., Merle Smith Seay, of Inman, and Don (Barbara) Smith, of Cowpens.

On April 20, a celebration of Harry’s life took place at Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Memorial donations in his name can be sent to the church at 309 East Cedar Rock Street, Pickens, SC, 29671.

Mike Shope

Liberty — Dennis Michael “Mike” Shope, 55, of 109 Sharon Heights Drive, died Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Franklin, N.C., he was a son of Mary Wanda Matheson Jenkins and the late Dennis Shope.

For many years he worked for New Life Environmental. He loved to be outdoors, and was an avid hunter. He enjoyed watching wrestling, and cooked and sold boiled peanuts all over our area.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Liberty are three sisters, Denise Phillips of Liberty, Tracy Shope of Alpharetta, Ga., and Chantel Whiten of Toccoa, Ga.; a brother, Bobby Shope of Easley; and two nieces, Cricket West and Amber Phillips, and a nephew, Colt Shope; four great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a nephew, Jake Phillips.

Memorial services to honor Mike’s life were held on April 19 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel.

CMSgt. John Ray Reeves, USAF Ret.

Hanahan — CMSgt. John Ray Reeves, USAF Ret., 77, of Hanahan, died Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

Ray was born August 13, 1937 in Pickens, son of the late Waddy A. Reeves and the late Liza Queen Reeves. He attended Pickens High School, received his associate degree from Trident Technical College, served in the Vietnam War, retired after 23 years as a Chief Master Sergeant in the US Air Force and also retired from civil service as a Real Property Officer at the Charleston Air Force Base.

Ray was a member and past Master of Strict Observance Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Omar Temple, past Chief of the Keystone Cops and a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” R. Arnold of Greenville, two sons, John Ray Reeves, Jr. of Pickens and Mark Coleman Reeves of Williamston; the mother of his children, Georgia H. Harvey of Pickens; former spouse, best friend and caregiver, Linda Pace Reeves of North Charleston; brother, James A. Reeves of Pickens; sisters, Emma Lou Grant of Pickens, and Janette Hamlin of Pelzer; grandchildren: Robby Arnold, Charlie Raye Reeves, Brooke Reeves, Jacob Reeves and Erin Reeves; great-grandchildren, Austin Mulkey and Brooks Arnold; step-son, Rick Brezeale of North Charleston; step grandchildren: Jennifer Young, Ryan Brezeale, Brandon Brezeale, Danny Brezeale; step great-grandchildren: Jose, Cameron, Brook, Baylor Brezeale, Maddux Brezeale, Oliver and Avery Young; and his dedicated caregivers, Malinda Moore and Mary Green. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nell Smith and Polly Pace; and stepdaughter, Lisa B. Coker; and step-grandson, Chris Grinstead.

Funeral services were held on April 19 in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Pickens.

Patterson Dunson

Easley — Shirley Jean Patterson Dunson, 58 wife of Randy Donnie Dunson passed from this life Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital, Eastside.

Born in Pickens County, she is a daughter of Bertha Ellen Holcombe Patterson of Liberty and the late Carl Dean Patterson.

Shirley loved camping, working in her flower bed, cooking, her family and her little dog Bo.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 41 years, Randy of the home, two sons; Gaston Dunson of Easley, C. B. Dunson (Christie) of Pickens, a daughter; Tabitha Dunson of Easley, seven grandchildren; Taylor Dunson, Tyler Dunson, Sally Trotter, Matthew Trotter, Isaac Dunson, Caden Manley, Alexis Merck, one great granddaughter; Carter Dunson, three brothers; David Patterson of Easley, Gearld Patterson of Pickens, and Bryon Patterson of Easley. Shirley loved Dean Broome and Bonnie Merck like her own children.

Mrs. Dunson was predeceased by her father, two brothers; Eugene Patterson, Ronnie Patterson, a sister; Sharon Broome and a sister-in-law; Diane Patterson.

Visitation was held on April 18 at Dillard Funeral Home with the service following in the funeral home chapel. The burial followed at Mountain View Memorial Park, Travelers Rest.

Louise S. Fennell

Easley — Louise Sloan Fennell of The Commons, wife of Roger C. Fennell, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Guy H. Sloan and Gladys Stephens Sloan.

Mrs. Fennell was formerly employed with Telco in Greenville and was a member of Berea Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 53 years, is a daughter, Sherri Thompson (Jeff) of Greer; a step grandson, Justin Thompson; five sisters, Bobbie Thrasher of Iva, Guynell Kind of Piedmont, Doris Rogers of Pelzer, Ruby Greene and Judy Kelley both of Easley; and three brothers, Joel Sloan of Gallatin, Tenn., Steve Sloan, and Thomas Sloan both of Easley.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home – Downtown with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lucile C. Stephens

Easley — Mrs. Katherine Lucile Cox Stephens, 92, wife of the late Raymond Rastus Stephens, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Nancy McDowell Cox, Mrs. Stephens retired from Woodside Mill-Greenville and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she was a charter member.

Surviving are two sons, Eddie Stephens (Kim C.) of Easley, and Thomas L. Hendricks (Chylene) of Travelers Rest; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Stephens was predeceased by two brothers, three sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Escort of honor will be the Nancy King Sunday School Class of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church, prior to the service.

The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Kim Stephens.
