PICKENS — Rep. Davey Hiott, a Pickens native, has been named chairman of the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee of the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Hiott became interested in the position after the former chairman stepped down for a spot on the Ways and Means Committee.

“It’s a team effort,” Hiott said of the committee. “We have 18 people on the committee, and we work together to try to do what is best for the people of South Carolina. We have members from the mountains to the coast, so many interests are represented in this committee.”

Rep. V. Stephen Moss of Blacksburg was named vice chairman of the committee, which is comprised of 18 representatives. Rep. Chandra E. Dillard of Greenville is the second vice chair. The committee has 18 representatives on it.

“I was fortunate enough to be elected chairman,” Hiott said. “We have some very important work to do. Our committee covers about every source of income in the state.”

The committee also covers forestry and parts of the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

“Pretty much if you eat, we’re going to be responsible to you in some way.” Hiott said. “It’s a wide range of issues we will be dealing with.”

Hiott looks forward to serving people from his new chairmanship.

“I want to do the best I can to help South Carolina farmers prosper,” he said.
