Police: Man tried to kill mother

PICKENS — A Pickens man is behind bars after police said he fired a shotgun at his mother as she fled in a car Sunday.

David James Dodds, 34, of 909 Sliding Rock Road, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

According to Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe, Dodd’s mother told police he had left the home on Sliding Rock Road on foot armed with a sawed-off shotgun at some point on Sunday.

After she became concerned her son might hurt himself, the mother went to find him, eventually finding him a short distance from the home, Hashe said.

As the mother attempted to calm her son down, she told officers, he threatened her and fired a single shotgun blast into the rear windshield of the vehicle.

Although the woman was not struck by any shotgun pellets, which lodged in the back of the driver’s side seat and headrest, she did receive injuries from the shattered glass, Hashe said.

The woman called the sheriff’s office after driving to a “safe haven,” according to Hashe.

Dodds was arrested inside his home by the Pickens County SWAT team on Monday morning, Hashe said.
