Wrestlers qualify for state squads

CENTRAL — Six members from the Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club have been selected to compete in national tournaments representing South Carolina.

Cadet wrestlers (born 98-99) Matt Frey (126 lbs.), Cole Murphy (132 lbs.) and brother Kris (152 lbs.) will compete for Team South Carolina in the Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Team Duals to be held in Daytona Beach, Fla., on June 10-14. This is Frey’s second trip to the tournament. All three wrestlers are from Liberty.

Davon Powell (106 lbs.), Tanner Chambers (182 lbs.) and Nikki Weidman (106 lbs.) will compete for Team South Carolina in Fargo, N.D., at the USAW Individual Championships on July 17-22. The Fargo competition is known as the world’s largest wrestling tournament. This will be Chambers’ second trip to the “Fargo Dome.”

Other BPWC athletes could qualify for the teams depending on their performances at the SC-USA State championships, held on May 17.
