PC Meals on Wheels expands programs and service offerings

COUNTY — On July 1, Pickens County Meals on Wheels (PCMOW) expanded its programs and service offerings to include not only home-delivered meals, but also congregate meals and activities including health promotion and disease prevention education.

The change is in response to the consolidation of Seniors Unlimited’s senior centers and the agency’s closure on June 30. The decision to expand operation was not taken lightly.

“We are committed to meeting the needs of seniors in our community,” Pickens County Meals on Wheels director Meta Bowers said. “We believe we are the only agency in Pickens County that is capable and willing to step in and

6-25 Page 4A.inddAt the end of my last column, my father was in the hospital and my mother had fallen and injured herself and was therefore staying with my sister, Rhonda, for a few days.

I am a terrible doctor. But my father is a far worse patient. I honestly feel sorry for the folks who had to deal with him after he started to feel better.

It does not take B.F. Robinson long to decide he should be going home. Plans were for him to stay until Friday, but for his sake — or that of the hospital staff — he was released Thursday.

He came home, then my mother came home. We were just one big, not yet healthy family. Then Monday I was set to deliver newspapers early due to the July 4 holiday. When I got into my car and headed toward Pickens, I notice the engine was not running well.

EDGAR O. HOLDER

PICKENS — Edgar O. Holder, 92, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

He was the son of Ossie Crawford Holder and Christine Parsons Holder. After high school he went to work for Poinsett Lumber Company as a lumber inspector and dry kiln operator. Around 1950 while still working at the lumber mill he started working with his cousin Dwight Holder selling perpetual care cemetery property. In 1955 he resigned from Poinsett to concentrate on the cemetery business. He built a 40 year career in the cemetery business. During that time he served 20 years on the South Carolina Cemetery Board and was past president of the South Carolina Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple for several decades and rode his Tennessee Walking horse with the Hejaz Horse Patrol. He we past president of the Southeastern Shrine Horse Patrol Association.

In 1960 he organized Ace Sales and Consultants that combined cemetery operations with real estate investing

Sdpc graduates earn Teacher Forum Educational Scholarships

COUNTY — Seven graduates of the class of 2014 have earned the School District of Pickens County Teacher Forum Educational Scholarship.

The scholarships are awarded to graduating senior Teacher Cadets from each Pickens County high school.

The seniors selected must have has completed a Teacher Cadet course as a junior or senior. The students must be planning to attend a technical college and transfer to a four—year college or to attend a four-year college or university in South Carolina and must be declaring a major in education in order to qualify.

The seven recipients of this year’s Teacher Forum Scholarships are:

• Abby Roe — Daniel High School, Winner

• John Garrett — Daniel High School, Runner-up

• Ashli Livingston — Easley High School, Winner

• Sierra Kelley — Easley High School, Runner-up

• Courtney Lesley — Liberty High School, Winner

• James Chambers — Liberty High School, Runner-up

• Casey Norton — Pickens High School

Winners earned a scholarship of $2,150. Runners-up or students at schools with a single qualifying applicant earned a scholarship of $1,000.
