• Sarlin to present an evening with Wright

The Friends of the Sarlin Library are thrilled to host an evening with award-winning graphic artist Emily Wright on Monday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m.

Wright, who is employed by the Pickens County Courier, is the recipient of more than 75 Palmy Awards in South Carolina Press Association’s annual contest. Library officials said they are honored to have her share her journey that began as a child with “doodles on birthday cards” to her role, now, in the newspaper business, as the department head of graphic design since 2007.

• Steppin’ It Up Coalition to meet

The Steppin’ It Up Coalition will hold its monthly meeting on Nov. 9. The meeting will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the City of Pickens Recreation Department, located at 545 Sangamo Road in Pickens.

Meetings are open to anyone interested in educating youth on the dangers and health implications of alcohol, tobacco and drug exposure and use.

Grace United to host annual fall bazaar

PICKENS — Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens will host its annual fall bazaar and luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The event will start at 7 a.m. Admission to the bazaar is free. A turkey and dressing lunch will be available for only $10 and will be served between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The dining room and Carryout will close promptly at 1:30 p.m. The lunch will be dine-in or carryout. Delivery service is available for four or more plates and within a five-mile radius of the church. Call the church office at (864) 878-2161 for tickets or a delivery.

The bazaar will include baked goods, candy, handmade jewelry, handmade crafts, wood crafts, holiday items, homemade jams, jellies, pickles and the like.

Praters Creek to host community festival Nov. 21

PICKENS — Praters Creek Baptist Church is planning a community festival on Nov. 21 from 2-7 p.m.

The event will offer food from 4-5 p.m. the day of the festival.

The church will have lots of games and entertainment for everyone. All are welcome to join for food, fun and fellowship.

Praters Creek Baptist Church is located at 621 Praters Creek Road in Pickens.

Easley — Mrs. Cynthia Lynn “Cindy” Simmons, 58, of 327 Lula Drive, Easley, loving wife of Jake Raybon Simmons, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at her residence.

Cindy was born in Greenville on Feb. 16, 1957. She was a Pickens County resident her whole life and graduated from Pickens High School. Cindy worked in her earlier years at Alice Manufacturing as a weaver, and then became a very successful businesswoman, selling HODA and then Mary Kay. In 1980, she traveled to Dallas, Texas, for a convention and found out that she had missed the top sales in the nation for HODA by only $10, and she realized she had given that much away 10 times over. She loved the Clemson Tigers, her family, fishing, camping and going to the beach.

In addition to her husband of 31 years, Cindy is survived by her two adopted sons; Jack Valetti of Easley; and Carl Holliday of Greenville; her adopted daughter; Allison Miller of Virginia; her mother and father-in-law; Mack and Alma Simmons of Balsam Grove, N.C.; and three sisters; Phyllis Carls and her husband, Mike, of Easley; Melissa Garrett of Easley; and Tracy Fowler and her husband, James, of Greenville. Cindy is also survived by two sisters-in-law; Nenia Grooms and her husband, Edgar; and April Judd and her husband, Glenn, both of Balsam Grove, N.C.; a special aunt; Jean Galloway of Easley; a special uncle; Dennis Wilson of Seneca; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Cindy’s name to Miracle Hill Ministries; P.O. Box 2546 Greenville, SC 29602.

BILL KING

Liberty — Virgil Eugene “Bill” King, 90, of 875 Five Forks Road, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Liberty, he was a son of the late Zuela and Lillie Campbell King.

He was president of King’s Sunset Nursery and was a second-generation nurseryman. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.

Mr. King was a longtime member of Flat Rock Baptist Church and will always be remembered for his pecan pies during Christmastime.

Surviving are two sons, Tommy King and his wife, Sharon, and Roger King, all of Liberty; two sisters, Irene Griffith of Liberty and Iris Pepper of Easley; three grandchildren, Ashley and Olivia Shaffer and Noah King.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to his caregivers, Candice Teague and Lisa Hightower, and also the caregivers at the Foothills Presbyterian Home of Easley.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. King were held Oct. 30 at Flat Rock Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials are requested to Flat Rock Baptist Church, 115 Slab Bridge Road, Liberty SC 29657.

PICKENS — James Oliver Webb Sr. (“Peanut”), 77, son of the late Jess and Olivia (Rogers) Webb, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Oconee County, James retired from Tenneco Oil Company.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mary E. Webb; three daughters, Jacqueline Freeman of Greenville, Carol (Juliese) Anderson of Pickens and Ericka (Michael) Suber Sr. of Powdersville; sons James (Kathryn) Ashmore of Newport News, Va., and James (Gwendolyn) Webb Jr., Thomas Webb and Kenneth Webb, all of Pickens; and sisters, Betty Jane Webb, Shirley Robinson and Nancy Keith, all of Pickens; Powna Ruth Webb of Easley, and Joyce (Roberto) Diaz of Rex, Ga.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Frank B. Webb and Donald Lee Webb; and two sisters, Helen Huff and Jessie Lee Webb.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at Griffin Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pickens. Interment services will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 6-7 p.m. at the mortuary in Liberty.

DAVID WILLIAM SHOVE SR.

Six Mile — David William Shove Sr., 75, of 261 Willow Spring Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, at his residence.

Born in Lyons, N.Y., he was the husband of Hildegard Gohl Shove, and was a son of the late Theodore and Eva Countryman Shove. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 368th Engineering Battalion during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Pickens County Department of Roads and Bridges and attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Norris.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six children, Leonard Bott of Tennessee, Vienna Hager of Switzerland, Jr. Shove of Six Mile, Frank Eric Shove of Frankfurt, Germany, Serina Lessord of New York, and Michelle Lessord of New York; four grandchildren, Sabrina Hager, Samuel Barone Shove, Michelle Mercier and Hope Mercier; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Samira Minder; and three sisters, Kathy LaBrake, Sherry Case and Dawn Searor.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

A memorial service was held Oct. 31, and inurnment will be held at a later date at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery. Liberty Mortuary and Cremation Services are handling arrangements.

Easley — Mr. James “Larry” Salmon, 73, husband of the late Maxine Wilson Salmon, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, in Warrenville.

Born in Fayetteville, N.C., a son of the late Cass Benton and Carrie Melton Salmon, Mr. Salmon retired from Steel Heddle in Greenville with 31 years of service. He was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Bates 189 Masonic Lodge of Easley. Larry was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War, and served 28 years with the Army National Guard.

Surviving are a son, Denis Salmon (Jennifer) of Warrenville; a daughter, Sabina S. Cote (Randy) of Greenville; a sister, Frances Cooper of Dover, Del.; and two grandchildren, Trevor and Kaitlyn Cote. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Salmon was predeceased by a son, Cass E. Salmon; two brothers, Charles and Robert Salmon; and two sisters, Peggy Jumaville and Doris Barnes.
