Lions prepared for trip to South Pointe

CENTRAL — Daniel is in the AAA state playoffs, with the first round kicking off this Friday night.

But the Lions must make a long trip to Rock Hill to take on the defending state AAA champions in the South Pointe Stallions.

Daniel’s Malik Watt looks for running room after an interception during the Lions’ game against Seneca.

The challenge has been laid out for Randy Robinson’s troops, and now is their chance to create a lasting legacy out of a somewhat lackluster season.

Daniel finished in a disappointing fourth place in the Western AAA, region with tough loses to rivals Wren, Belton-Honea Path and Seneca along the way, ending the season with an unfamiliar losing regular season, finishing 4-6 overall. The Lions, however, got their four wins in region play, and that was enough to give them one more shot at making the 2015 season respectable.

Their opponent, South Pointe, knows how to win and has posted a 9-1 season, with its only loss coming in a 35-34 overtime loss to AAAA power Northwestern.

“South Pointe is definitely the fastest team we have seen this season,” Robinson said. “Their secondary has a couple of division-one athletes that can run and are great cover guys. Their defensive front is small, but also faster than anyone we have seen.

“Offensively it all revolves around their quarterback, Greg Ruff. He is small, but very difficult to tackle. He extends plays and breaks down the defense with his feet. He has a great running back with him (Voshon St. Hill), and their talented defensive backs, Derion Kendrick and Josh Wilkes, also play wide receiver.”

Daniel did get an opportunity to get an extra week to prepare for the task at hand, although the Stallions did as well. The off week across the state was the result of many Lowerstate schools having to catch up on games missed during the historic floods that devastated the state last month.

Robinson told the Courier the extra week was a chance for his team to get to work on fundamentals.

“Zone blocking, pass protection, tackling in space and taking good angles are all basics that you have to do well to beat a fast, athletic team,” he said.

Robinson said his staff has worked hard with the team on tackling in space. He said that is the key to keeping Ruff in the pocket, which is very important to slowing down the South Pointe offense.

The Lions have had moments in 2016 where they have shown they are capable of playting with anyone, such as the slugfest they had with powerful Belton-Honea Path and dominating wins over the lesser schools in the region.

“I hope our seniors realize it is an opportunity to get a run going if we play well,” Robinson said. “We have to control the ball and finish drives to help our defense. We need to limit their possessions.”

It will be Daniel’s second trip to South Pointe in the playoffs, as the Lions traveled in 2010 to take on the top-ranked Stallions — led by future South Carolina All-American and NFL Draft top pick Jadeveon Clowney — and nearly escaped with the upset in a 20-14 loss. South Pointe ended the season with a narrow loss to Myrtle Beach in the Class AAA state championship game.

Robinson pointed out that his coaches have noticed on film several of South Pointe’s opponents have moved the ball, but turned it over or bogged down in the red zone.

“We played great up there in 2010 when no one gave us a chance against Clowney and that group, so I hope we take the same approach and go compete,” Robinson said. “It will be a great challenge, but we are looking forward to another chance to compete Friday. We have spent several days correcting mistakes and working on fundamentals.

“South Pointe presents challenges in the speed of the game, so we are working to give our guys the best scout team look we can. I just hope we compete and play disciplined football.”

Red Devils out of balance for 2015

LIBERTY — The 2015 Liberty football season was faced with a major challenge before it ever began.

While little was said during the offseason, over the summer and during fall camp the Red Devils were faced with a dilemma. They were forced to start the season with a quarterback who had never played a down of varsity football.

Brandy Karr/Photo Liberty’s Tyler Renaud carries the ball during the Devils’ season-ending win over Carolina on Oct. 30. Renaud led Liberty with 741 yards on the ground in 2015.

Brandy Karr/Photo
Liberty’s Tyler Renaud carries the ball during the Devils’ season-ending win over Carolina on Oct. 30. Renaud led Liberty with 741 yards on the ground in 2015.

Now a team who depended on the run so much was faced with the task of developing a quarterback who could throw effectively when needed.

Rising senior Tyler Burgess decided not to return to football. Burgess had started as a freshman and was a three-year starter for Liberty. The heir apparent was Nick Reeves, but an injury during summer camp at North Greenville knocked him out of action to start the season. Reeves played in just seven games and had to work himself into shape as the season progressed.

Austin Hughey stepped into the starting role and gained valuable experience as each game passed, but he also missed a couple of games due to concussion protocol.

Simply put, the Red Devils were never able to maintain consistency and be effective through the air, as Liberty passed for only 209 yards through the entire season. Reeves was 16-for-50 with seven interceptions, 121 yards and no touchdowns. Hughey was 9-for-33 with five interceptions and 88 yards. Hughey had one touchdown pass on the season.

The Red Devils gained 1,803 yards on the ground and averaged four yards per carry. Tyler Renaud led the Red Devils with 741 yards rushing on 140 carries. He averaged 74.1 yards per game to lead the Red Devil rushing attack. Eddy Mathis was limited to just 420 yards while battling ankle issues that limited his effectiveness. His longest run of the season went for 76 yards.

The Devils’ first game of the season against Crescent gave a hint that the offense was out of balance. Liberty managed just 34 yards passing on a 2-for-7 night and was held without a touchdown in a 6-3 overtime loss. The Devils also failed to score a touchdown in game two in a 30-0 rain-delayed game against Pickens.

It’s hard to win games averaging a mere 13.4 points per game, and the Red Devils had five games in which they scored seven points or less, including the two regulation shutouts. They scored 21 points in three games, losing two and shutting out Walhalla in a 21-0 win, their first victory of the season. Liberty scored 37 against Carolina in the season finale, but 23 of those points were scored by the defense or special teams.

The defense, on the other hand, had a lot of pressure put on it. The Devils did a respectful job in allowing just 21.3 points per game. They held opponents to 106.6 yards per game rushing the ball. They allowed 1,698 passing yards and 17 touchdown passes.

Aaron Bates was the leader in tackles by a wide margin, with a total of 70. He also had 11 tackles for loss and two sacks. Cole Murphy led the defense with 12 tackles for loss and was second in tackles with 41. Murphy also had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He was the defensive player of the game against Carolina, with a 10-yard interception return for a touchdown and a 90-yard fumble return for a touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown in the same game.

Another defensive leader for Liberty was Jacob Herman with 37 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Gatlin Bell added 30 tackles and one sack. Brayden Shirley had 29 tackles and 3.5 for loss. Kevin Tabron had 28 tackles and three tackles for loss. Ethan Harris and Deandre Mansell both recorded 25 tackles. Mansell was fourth on the team in tackles for loss with 6.5 and led the team in sacks with four.

Chesnee and Woodruff were the only teams to really give the Red Devil defense fits through the air. The Red devils gave up 309 yards to Chesnee and 374 yards to Woodruff.

The most rushing yards allowed by the Red Devils in any game was 209 against Powdersville. The Patriots also gained 211 yards through the air against the Red Devils, embodying the balance on offense that Liberty was never able to achieve.

Red Devils coach Kyle Stewart was proud of his team for the effort they displayed each week.

“We will continue to develop our young men and work to get better on both sides of the ball,” Stewart said. “We have a lot to work on during the offseason and expect to be better next year.”

Right now the new realignment has some major changes to the region for the Red Devils. With the addition of a AAAAA division, the Red Devils will stay in AA for the 2016 season.

The only teams playing football in the new region besides the Red Devils will be Abbeville, Ninety Six and Southside Christian. Greenville Tech Charter and Brashier Middle College will also be added to the region, but those schools do not field football teams.

It is yet to be seen how many region games will be played or required for the 2016 season. It will certainly be a different look — a huge difference from seven region games to possibly three region games.

It seems the region will be out of balance as much as the Red Devils were in 2015. Hopefully both will find a way to balance out once the new season gets here.

Blue Flame open playoffs at Seneca

PICKENS — For the second season in a row, the Pickens Blue Flame are facing a rematch with the Western AAA champions in the opening round of the playoffs.[cointent_lockedcontent]

Pickens senior Gunner Covey gets past a Seneca defender during the Blue Flame’s loss to the Bobcats on Oct. 9. Pickens will travel to Seneca’s Tom Bass Field for the two teams’ playoff opener on Friday night.

After earning an at-large postseason bid as the fifth-place team in the region, the Blue Flame will cross the county line this Friday night to take on unbeaten Seneca.

Although it last played on Oct. 30 in a loss against Belton-Honea Path, Pickens waited more than a week to learn it would play the Bobcats, as the Blue Flame learned their opponent on Saturday morning, the day after a number of Class AAA teams finally finished their regular seasons due to the historic flooding that ravaged the state last month.

Pickens is hoping for a better result this time around than it had in last season’s playoff opener, as the Blue Flame traveled to undefeated region champion Wren a season ago and fell behind 49-0 in the first half on the way to an eventual 56-13 loss.

The Blue Flame are also hoping to improve upon their performance against the Bobcats earlier this season, as Seneca turned a 7-6 halftime lead into a 31-6 win at Pickens on Oct. 9.

First-year Blue Flame coach John Boggs, a former standout lineman under legendary Pickens coach Bill Isaacs, was proud of his team’s fight in the previous meeting between the two teams.

“I was proud of these kids’ effort,” Boggs said after the game. “I thought they laid it out there tonight. They showed a lot of heart and a lot of passion.”

Despite the loss, the contest was part of a strong five-game stretch for the Blue Flame, as they blasted West-Oak (38-0) and Walhalla (44-10) before falling against Seneca. The week following the loss to the Bobcats, Pickens came up one play short of a win over county rival Daniel at Singleton Field, then blew the doors off of Palmetto by a 48-7 final.

There will be familiar faces leading the Bobcats once again when the two teams tangle on Friday, as Seneca is led by former Pickens coach Brett Turner and is quarterbacked by his son, Elijah, who was the starter for the Blue Flame as a sophomore before transferring to Seneca when his father was hired there as an assistant.

Turner’s brother, Bart, is still an assistant coach at Pickens.

Elijah Turner, who was selected last month to participate in the North-South All-Star Game, was sidelined with an injury against the Blue Flame during the teams’ first meeting this season.

Pickens forced the Bobcats into mistakes in that game, but struggled to capitalize. Seneca fumbled twice and threw a first-half interception, but the Blue Flame only scored six points on three red-zone possessions. Pickens had a touchdown catch nullified due to a blocking penalty and lost another possession on a fumbled option pitch.

Shrine Bowl selection Matt Gravely nailed a pair of field goals in the second quarter to bring the Flame to within a point at halftime, but Seneca’s Jacory Benson — half of a dangerous one-two tandem with Braxton Gambrell — exploded for three second-half touchdowns to lead the Bobcats to the win.

With the ground game struggling, the game marked one of the most impressive passing performances of the season for the Blue Flame, as Tanner Stegall finished the game with 159 yards through the air and Adam Thomas hooked up with Isaiah Ferguson for 54 yards on a halfback pass. Ferguson finished the game with two grabs for 107 yards, while senior bruiser Gunner Covey had two catches for 51 yards against the Blue Flame despite managing just 23 yards on 11 carries on the ground.

Kickoff Friday night in the playoff opener is set for 7:30 p.m. at Seneca’s Tom Bass Field.

Top-ranked Tigers clinch division title

CLEMSON — Just days after they were ranked No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2015 season, the Clemson Tigers overcame a first-half deficit to knock off No. 15 Florida State and clinch the ACC Atlantic Division title in front of a deafening crowd of 83,099 fans at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A day after the 23-13 win, the Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll for the first time since winning the program’s only national championship in January 1982 and only the third time in school history.

Clemson’s Adrian Baker goes up to make an interception in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Florida State.

Against the Seminoles, Clemson overcame its first halftime deficit of the season to capture the division for the first time since 2011 and improved to 9-0 on the season.

“We had help from all phases tonight,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “When we had mistakes, we picked each other up. There was no panic. There was some frustration in the first half, but the will to win and the fight was there.

“Our team loves each other, and that’s what it takes. Tonight was a tremendous team effort from everyone. That’s what it takes if you’re going to win a championship.”

A low-scoring first half left the Tigers looking for a change in fortune heading into the second half. The offense got what it was looking for early in the third quarter with a touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to Deon Cain to put the Tigers on top 13-10.

Watson — who has found himself firmly in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy — set a career high in both completions (28) and passing attempts (42), as well as a career high with 107 rushing yards. Watson’s 107 yards on the ground also marked the first time a Tiger quarterback had more than 100 rushing yards since Tajh Boyd ran for 127 yards in a 40-35 win over Ohio State in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 3, 2014.

The Tiger defense came out to make a statement after halftime adjustments, forcing two turnovers and one sack. Their efforts allowed the offense to come in and capitalize, pulling away from a 13-13 tie score thanks to Greg Huegel’s third field goal of the game with 7:23 left in the fourth quarter.

In a crucial moment, Ben Boulware and former Daniel High School standout Shaq Lawson stopped Florida State star Dalvin Cook on a fourth-and-one play, allowing the offense to take over on the Seminole 40. Watson then made clutch plays on consecutive third downs with completions to Charone Peake, who converted both for first downs. The offense capped off the game-clinching drive with a 25-yard rushing touchdown by Wayne Gallman.

Boulware and B.J. Goodson worked together to cause a turnover late in the fourth quarter to give the Tiger offense possession. The offense eventually took a knee and sealed the victory.

In addition to climbing atop the AP poll on Sunday with 31 first-place votes — 25 more than in the previous week and five ahead of second-place Ohio State — Clemson also jumped three spots to No. 2 in the USA Today coaches poll.

Ohio State had held the top spot in the AP poll in each of the first 10 weeks of the 2015 season after becoming the first team in the poll’s history to be a unanimous preseason No. 1, but Saturday’s 23-13 win over Florida State was enough to convince voters the Tigers were deserving of the top billing.

Clemson joins Ohio State, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Houston as the only undefeated FBS teams in the nation.

The Tigers’ next contest is set for Saturday at Syracuse. Kickoff time is set for 3:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome, and the game will be televised by ABC.

Clemson will enter the game with a 12-game winning streak, the second longest active winning streak in the nation. Only defending national champion Ohio State has a longer streak with 22 straight wins.
