Flame finish season unbeaten in region

Pickens girls set to host first playoff match Tuesday

PICKENS — The Pickens High School Lady Blue Flame downed Region I-4A foes Daniel and Palmetto last week to close out the regular season undefeated in the region.

Next on the agenda is an Oct. 29 playoff match in the friendly confines of Peggy Harden Anthony Gymnasium in Pickens.

In a home match played Oct. 14 against Daniel, the Lady Blue Flame defeated the Lady Lions in three sets, winning 25-18, 25-15, 25-18. In the Palmetto match played Oct. 16 in Williamston, the Lady Blue Flame defeated the Lady Mustangs 25-12, 25-17, 25-11.

The Lady Blue Flame finished the regular season with an overall record of 25-5, and since they are region champions, they will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They will play at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday facing the winner of Ridge View and Wren.

“Since we have more than a week to prepare for playoffs, we will concentrate on getting the girls physically prepared, but also mentally ready as well,” Blue Flame coach Rikki Owens said. “We are reading Tami Matheny’s book ‘The Confident Athlete’ as a team and are focused

HONEA PATH — The region woes showed no signs of stopping for the Pickens Blue Flame as they dropped to 0-3 in conference play Friday night, falling 49-0 on the road to Region I-4A power Belton-Honea Path Bears.

The Blue Flame struggled in every aspect of the game, only netting 94 yards of offense while allowing 401 yards to a Bear team that ranks amongst the best in Class 4A.

Trying to get out of its funk and break a two-game skid, Pickens changed several parts of its offensive approach during the game. The Flame had more passing yards than rushing yards, a first for the season, as they called several more plays from shotgun and I-formation than usual.

While the Flame have changed up their usual gameplan in spurts all season, they had yet to do it for the duration of a game to this point.

“Well it was a few things.,” head coach Chad Smith said of the reasoning behind the changes. “No. 1, we’ve been struggling a little bit offensively, and No. 2, we are very

LIBERTY — Coming off a stellar road win at Crescent, the Liberty Red Devils returned back home for homecoming against the West-Oak Warriors on Friday night looking to build a winning streak.

The Devils stuck with their new air-raid offense, and it continued to pay dividends, as Liberty racked up more than 600 yards of offense and won big, finishing with a 45-24 victory.

Red Devils coach Kyle Stewart has shown a remarkable abiltity to adjust, as his recently implemented high-octane offense went off for a second consecutive week. The Red Devils scored more points against the Warriors than they did in a full five games of non-region play.

“We try to see what we can do week to week as far as continuing to add,” Stewart said. “We

Green Wave in must-win situation after loss at Greenwood

By Eugene Jolley

GREENWOOD — Easley came oh so close to pulling off a Region I-5A surprise Friday night, falling at perennial powerhouse Greenwood, 24-13.

Easley trailed 17-13 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold off the option running of Eagles quarterback Jaylin Tolbert. He alternated at quarterback with Daylan Rappley for much of the game, but it was Tolbert who had the big plays, including the clinching score with three minutes left in the game.

“I mean close again,” Easley coach Caleb King said. “We’ve got to keep pounding away in the weight room. That’s all we’re going to do. They do a great job of coming to work every Monday. On Monday they’re going to come to work and get after it. I know they are.”

Greenwood got the first break of the game midway through the first quarter when

WALHALLA — After the previous week’s heroic comeback against Wren, the Daniel Lions looked poised to succumb to a big-game hangover against the Walhalla Razorbacks on Friday night.

The Razorbacks game-planned well for Daniel in the first half, keeping the ball away from the Lions’ explosive offense and pounding them on the ground to take a 20-13 lead into the half.

Things changed in a big way from there, with the Lions opening up the second half with a touchdown and interception as they stifled the Razors and found their groove through the air for a 41-27 victory.

“There are no easy wins in this region,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said. “This team continues to show me that they have so much resolve. Nothing is ever too good or too bad
