VICKIE DIANNE WILSON
EASLEY — Vickie Dianne Wilson, 67, passed away on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020.
Vickie is survived by a daughter, Rita (Matt) Anthony of Pickens; a son, LaMot Wilson of Easley; a life partner, Ron Hunter of Easley; grandchildren, Jake, Autum and Ava; a great-grandson, Banks; brothers, Lee and Joe; and sisters, Debbie, Becky and Jan.
Mrs. Wilson was predeceased by her husband, Keith Wilson; and her parents, William and Jackie Youngblood.
Vickie was a member of Griffin Baptist Church.
The family will host a memorial service at a later date
Donations can be made in Vickie’s honor to Griffin Baptist Church, 1629 Pumpkintown Highway, Pickens SC, 29671.
Mountain View Funeral Home is serving the Wilson family.

CENTRAL — The Daniel girls’ basketball team continued its string of domination in region 
play with a hard-fought 40-17 win against Pickens on Friday night.
Kaylee Gillespie scored 10 of the Blue Flame’s 17 points to lead all scorers, while Lani Carter was the top scorer for the Lions with nine points in the game.

CENTRAL — With both teams reeling in region play, the Daniel High School boys’ basketball 
team got back on track in a big way with a 64-39 win over county rival Pickens on Friday.
Brenton Benson led the Lions in scoring, finishing with 20 points in only three quarters of play. Benson also finished the game with 10 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive side of the floor. Jake Alexander led the Flame in scoring, finishing with 11 points.

Liberty squads drop region matchups against Powdersville

LIBERTY — While it’s still early in the region slate for the local high school basketball teams, 
the standings are starting to take shape.
Each win or loss has started meaning more and more as teams turn their eyes toward the inevitable goal of the playoffs, and for the Liberty Red Devils, losses in both the boys’ and girls’ games against Powdersville on Friday night have them on the edge of contention.

Food drive winners
Every year during basketball season, the Pickens Recreation Department sponsors a canned food drive to benefit Gleaning House Ministries. As an added incentive, the rec department awards a pizza/ice cream party to the team that collects the most cans. This year’s winning team was a 9-10 boys’ team coached by Molly Harned and AV Arnold. Team members include Isaac Arnold, Landon Blanton, Abram Harned, Jackson Holder, Christian Mullins, Vonn Mabina, Tucker Mulkey, Connor Porter and Kyler Wilson.
Signups ending soon for soccer, volleyball
PICKENS — Registration will close Friday for the spring soccer and volleyball seasons at the Pickens Recreation Center on Sangamo Road in Pickens.
For soccer, the following coed age divisions are offered — 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Depending on the size of leagues, the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions may have to be combined.
For volleyball, the age divisions will be 7-9, 10-12, 13-14 and 15-17.

More than just a color
Dear Editor,
I am sure many have heard about the debate on the color scheme for the restoration of Bruce Field. Pickens High School’s colors are blue and white with a bit of red, and that has been the color of the stadium wall on Jewell Street.
The city of Pickens owns the field, and the wall has been pressure-washed and is awaiting paint. The city was talking about painting the wall a dark gray. The reasoning was it would be cheaper to maintain and match the paint on the Doodle Trail station. (You can see the painted

The walk of encouragement
I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about how it seems that so many people are living in sadness and discouragement when he mentioned something that really made me 
think. He said that it was impossible to be depressed and walk in the joy of God’s presence at the same time.
After our conversation, I continued to ponder this statement, and by the way, I do agree with it. I’m not saying that developing an optimistic lifestyle is easy by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely believe it’s possible.

Eastatoee Valley historical marker unveiled in Sunset

SUNSET — The Pickens County Historical Society unveiled the county’s newest historical
marker, one that celebrates the Eastatoee Valley and the people who have dwelt in the area for thousands of years.
“This marker is extraordinarily significant,” PCHS senior vice oresident Wayne Kelley said at the start of the unveiling Wednesday morning.
The marker is located on Cleo Chapman Highway at Shooting Tree Ridge Road.
