State’s top court rules in favor of man convicted in ‘17 killing

COLUMBIA — The South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a Liberty man appealing his 2017 murder conviction, claiming the trial judge did not adequately consider his claim of self-defense.

John McCarty’s case will be sent back to circuit court, following a ruling issued by state Supreme Court justices on Sept. 21.

Sex offender sentenced for soliciting minor

COUNTY — A Six Mile man has been sentenced to seven years in state prison after pleading guilty to criminal solicitation of a minor and other charges.

According to a release from the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, special victims unit detectives initiated an investigation into allegations of criminal solicitation of a minor last September involving Avery Lee Cooper Smith, 23, a registered sex offender.

Detectives received information indicating Smith was knowingly disseminating explicit messages to an underage juvenile via the social media platform Snapchat, the release said.

When questioned by detectives, Smith admitted to sending sexual material to an underage child using various social media

National Guard unveils renovated Easley facility

EASLEY — U.S. Army National Guard soldiers with the 2nd Battalion 263rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment (ADA BN), South Carolina National Guard, conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renovation of Battery B in Easley earlier this month.

New administrator on job in Pickens

National health survey coming to Pickens County

COUNTY — The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the most comprehensive survey of the health and nutritional status of the U.S. population, is coming to Pickens County starting this week.

Why Pickens County? All counties and cities in the United States have a chance to be selected for the NHANES and, this year, Pickens County is one of 15 counties selected to be part of the initiative.
