Former LHS booster club treasurer, 2 others charged after investigation

LIBERTY — Three members of a local family are facing charges after police say approximately $40,000 was embezzled from the Liberty High School booster club and used for personal gain over a two-year span.
Brandy Spivey Karr, former treasurer of the Liberty High School booster club, faces charges of breach of trust greater than $10,000, computer crimes act and conspiracy, while Scottie Ray Karr and Shaun Ray Karr were both charged with conspiracy.

Pickens man sentenced in fatal DUI

PICKENS — A Pickens man was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after 
pleading guilty to driving under the influence resulting in a death.
Jose Ismael Alejos, 61, entered a guilty plea on Sept. 18 to one count of felony driving under the influence resulting in death, 13th Circuit Solicitor Cindy Crick said in a news release Monday.

methamphetamine use, and the results of those studies could lead to new treatments.

Man arrested in gas station thefts

COUNTY — A man faces charges in connection with two burglaries at a Liberty gas station earlier this month.

Homeless shelter served with eviction notice

PICKENS — A shelter established to give those facing emergencies a place to stay is in danger of closing.
Pickens County Shelter of Hope is a passion project for Tracy and Sunshine Gantt, who added it to their ministry and worked for years to establish the shelter before it opened in April 2020. The shelter serves the homeless and struggling families.

Blue Flame take region lead with win over Daniel

CENTRAL — With region play entering full swing, longtime rivals Daniel and Pickens 
faced off on Sept. 16 with control of Region 2-4A on the line.
The Blue Flame fell to Daniel twice in the regular season last year, dropping the region title for the first time in more than a decade.
While Pickens ended up recovering from the losses last fall, taking down Daniel in the playoffs en route to its 17th state championship, the Blue Flame still felt they had unfinished business against the Lions and looked the part as they swept their cross-county foe in three straight sets.
