Ballenger reflects on his career, legacy at Blue Ridge Electric

PICKENS — After 55 years of dedicated service, Terry Ballenger retired as the Senior Vice President of Communications of the Blue Ridge Electric Co-op at the end of December.

Born and raised in Pickens County, Ballenger began part-time work in high school and through college as a summer employee in the early 1960s. He credits getting his foot in the door of the co-op by being a neighbor of A.J. Hurt, Blue Ridge’s first CEO.

Burden on taxpayers

In 2007, the school board passed the Greenville Plan and borrowed nearly $400 million to build and renovate schools. The school bond millage rate skyrocketed from 19 mills to 58 mills.

LIBERTY — Joni Lynn Parris, 62, loving wife of more than 30 years to Tommy Dean Parris, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, at her residence.

Born on May 5, 1963, Joni was the beloved daughter of the late Darryl Medlin and Nellie Duncan. A devoted Clemson Tigers fan, she enjoyed cheering on her team and sharing that passion with those around her. Joni had a special love for animals, especially her dogs, and treasured the companionship of her beloved pets. Above all, she loved her family deeply, finding her greatest joy in time spent with her grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart.
