ANNIE NELL ‘ANNE’ MEDLIN

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Annie Nell “Anne” Medlin, 79, of Southport, N.C., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022.

Anne was born on July 5, 1943, in Greenville, to the late Grady Franklin Cartee and Mildred Gertrude Waldrop Cartee.

As a young woman, Anne answered the call to be a public school teacher and never looked back. For more than 40 years, she touched countless lives and exemplified the role and responsibility of teaching. She loved her students, colleagues and the overall institution of learning. Anne was passionate about her calling and was held in high esteem by students and staff alike. Anne instinctively understood that every student learns differently and that effective education entails finding out how individual students learn best, especially those who might be struggling in the classroom.

A few years ago, a former student was vacationing near Southport, and he wanted to stop by for a visit. Now a successful businessman, he told her, “Mrs. Medlin, if you didn’t take the extra time to teach me how to read in the eighth grade, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You sat down with me and taught me how to read with a newspaper. I just want to say thank you.” This is one of many stories that could be shared about Anne. Anne also never hesitated to mentor younger teachers. She always went the extra mile when needed. Her influence and legacy, especially at South Brunswick Middle School, will continue for many years to come.

In addition to being faithful to her calling, Anne loved her family and friends with great intensity. Her home was always open, and she gave generously of her presence. Anne and her husband, Joe, spent many days and nights at ballgames and on family vacations. If there was anything that she cherished more than teaching, it was being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. There is so much more to say about this remarkable woman. She was classy, funny and smart and had a voracious appetite for reading. When things were quiet in the house, she could usually be found sitting with one of her favorite authors — and she had many.

Throughout the many peaks and valleys of life, her faith in God sustained her. When asked how she got through some worrisome times with her children, she simply replied, “I prayed a lot.” At the end of her journey, the same God who called her into teaching called her home. She let go and transcended into the vastness of love. It was peaceful and beautiful. She died a good death and she lived a remarkable life.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joe Medlin; two children, Shandi Medlin Sellers and husband, Robert, and Joe Medlin Jr. and wife, Crystal; three grandchildren, Madison Stanley (Will), Christopher Howard and Solomon Medlin; a sister, Brenda Cartee; a brother, Kimper Cartee and wife, Reba; two special people who she loved like grandchildren, Monni Morrow and Melanie Cusick; a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends who were like family; and her two dogs, Rocky and City Girl.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Southport Baptist Church.

JACK COLLINS

 

EASLEY — Mr. Jack Bundy Collins, 87, passed away on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022.

Born in Rock Hill, a son of the late Earl Roseboro Collins and the late Ethel Mae Adams Raines, Mr. Collins retired from Pizza Inn with 15 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and of the Baptist faith. Jack was dedicated to the Boy Scouts, where he served as Scoutmaster and volunteered at Camp Old Indian. He will be missed by all who loved and knew him.

Surviving are his two sons, Jack Collins and Rep. Neal Collins (Amanda); a brother, Harold Ray Collins (Lori); a sister, Linda Griggs; and a granddaughter, Olivia Ann Collins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Collins was predeceased by three brothers, Douglas Woodrow Collins, Jerry Collins and Billy Blackwell.

LARRY MCFADDEN

 

EASLEY — David Larry McFadden, 87, of The Willows, beloved husband of the late Jo Lynn Tumlin McFadden, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late David Alexander McFadden and Bertha Stokes McFadden.

Mr. McFadden was a 1953 graduate of Easley High School. He retired from Smith’s Addressing in Greenville and in his prior working career was employed with Barnes Real Estate for many years. He was a faithful member of Easley First United Methodist Church, the Mount Olivet Sunday School Class and the church choir. Mr. McFadden served in the Easley Lions Club, was past president of the Easley Booster Club and was an IPTAY representative. His passions were golfing, fishing and spending time with his family. He also proudly served his country in the United States National Guard.

Surviving are his son, David Tumlin McFadden and his wife, Nancy Griffith McFadden of Easley; granddaughters, Caroline McFadden Winograd, Anna McFadden Bane, Alexandra McFadden Harman and Emily Jo Anna McFadden; and great-grandchildren, David Winograd, Charles Winograd, Timothy Bane, Charlotte Bane and Eloise Harman.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son, John Scott McFadden

A celebration of life service was held on Aug. 19 at Easley First United Methodist Church.

RICHARD MILLER

 

LIBERTY — Richard Michael Miller, 76, died on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital Downtown.

Born in Seneca, he was a son of the late Alfred and Edna Hughes Miller. He worked many years as a truck driver and was of the Baptist faith. He loved horses and old cars. Richard was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his wife, Vickie Miller of the home; a son, Shane Miller; two daughters, Leslie Thompson and Vanessa Garza; a stepdaughter, Starr Moore; a stepson, Shannon Dickerson; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Miller.

Funeral services to honor Richard’s life were conducted on Aug. 19 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Visitation was held prior to the service, at the mortuary. Private entombment took place at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

CHARLES ALLEN ‘SACK’ BAGLEY JR.

CLEMSON — Charles Allen “Sack” Bagley Jr., 79, of Thomas Green Boulevard, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at Clemson Downs.

Born in Columbia, he was the husband of Betty Thompson Bagley and a son of the late Charles Allen Bagley Sr. and Virginia Aiton Rush. Mr. Bagley was a retired educator from Bamberg School District 1 and was the head football coach at Pendleton High School for 10 years early in his career. He also held graduate degrees from Clemson and The Citadel. He was an avid Clemson sports fan and loved being outdoors doing yard work. He cared deeply for his family, friends and students and could always create smiles with his sense of humor, jolly disposition and quick wit. He had a nickname for everyone. He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Tyler Vereen (William); a son, Chad Bagley (Susan); and three grandchildren, William, Andrew and Anne Bagley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half-sister, Lynn Rush Foxworth.

DAVID GARRISON

PICKENS — David E. Garrison, 86, passed away at Rainey Hospice House on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022.

David was born in Pickens, on July 21, 1936, to the late Ernest Casper and Vera Medlock Garrison. He worked in law enforcement for the Los Angeles Police Department. After coming back to Pickens, he became the owner and operator of Gar-Con Inc. for 32 years. He loved pulling for his beloved Clemson Tigers baseball team, where he also had played baseball. David was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens, where he was involved in many mission trips. He also attended Liberty United Methodist Church.

Mr. Garrison is survived by his brother, Dan Garrison.

In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Nealy Garrison; his daughter, Lynn Garrison; and one brother, Dr. Don C. Garrison.

The funeral services were conducted on Aug. 19 in the mausoleum chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with an entombment following.

The family members are at their respective homes.

ROBERT EDWARD LEE

DACUSVILLE — Robert Edward Lee, 56, loving husband of 28 years to Loree Irene Lee, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Robert was born on Sept. 7, 1965, the son of Gladys Sue Holland Poole and the late Harry Charles Lee. Affectionately known by those who loved him as “BDK”, “PawPaw” and “Grandpa RaRa”, he was a graduate of Travelers Rest High School. Mr. Lee loved spending time with his grandkids and his dog, Nibbles, and was very proud of his daughters. He enjoyed fishing, WWE Raw wrestling, Clemson football and basketball and going to the beach and fishing off the pier.

In addition to his wife, Loree, Mr. Lee is survived by his children, Jacqui Marissa Lee, Kayla McJunkin and Leilani Lee; his grandchildren, E. McJunkin, R. McJunkin and J. McJunkin; his siblings, Penny Dodgens, Bessie Tyler, Margaret Coleman and Freddy Wayne Lee; and brothers from another mother, Tim Smith and Dennis Hill.

Mr. Langston was predeceased by his father, Harry Charles Lee.

A gathering to honor Robert’s life will be announced at a later date.

ROGER MCNEELY

 

LIBERTY — Roger Dale McNeely, 73, died on Aug. 13, 2022, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Melvin K. and Daisy Stokes McNeely.

Roger was a United States Army veteran, having fought valiantly during the Vietnam War. He was a former commander of the American Legion Post 151 in Norris.

Surviving are a son, Marty McNeely of Anderson; and his longtime companion and special friend, Diane Patterson, along with her daughter, Talina Fleming, and her son, Cody Fleming. Also surviving are a brother, Randy McNeely of Liberty; three sisters, Charlene Nix of Pickens and Sandra Johnson and Judy Rackley, both of Easley; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger “Scooter” McNeely.

Memorial services to honor Roger’s life were held on Aug. 23 at the American Legion Hut, Post 151, in Liberty.

DEBORAH ROGERS HARE

EASLEY — Deborah Rogers Hare, 64, passed away on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Horace Hudson and Nellie Sue Sentell Hudson and Kenneth Gerald Rogers.

Deb was a dedicated employee of Kentwool, Runnymeade Plant, in Pickens, for more than 48 years. She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren, and enjoyed cheering for her Clemson Tigers.

Surviving are her children, Ashley Hare (Tommy) and Jessica Allsep (Mark), all of Easley; grandchildren, Matthew Hare, Hanna Allsep and Easton Hare; sisters, Ann Dalton of Easley, Sandi Stancil (Perry) of Westminster, Phyllis McGaha (Pete) of Easley and Donna Page (Larry) of Pickens; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Clarence Dalton.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

JOHN DANIEL ‘DAN’ ANTHONY

PICKENS — John Daniel “Dan” Anthony, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022, at Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum.

A native of Greenville County, Dan was born on Sept. 1, 1943, the son of the late W.D. “Tom” Anthony and Elizabeth R. Anthony. Mr. Anthony was a member of Griffin Baptist Church in Pickens. He loved his Lord and Savior, as well as his sons and his family.

Survivors include his sons, Tim Anthony and Mike Anthony, both of Pickens; his sisters, Jean A. Knight (Phil) and Judy A. Medlin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Anthony was predeceased by his brother, Carroll Anthony; and his brother-in-law, Darryl J. Medlin.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

ALFRED JAMES RUTLEDGE

PICKENS — Alfred James Rutledge, 93, husband of 59 years to Lula Belle Eloise Threlkeld Rutledge, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022.

A native of Greenville County, Mr. Rutledge was born on Dec. 18, 1928, to the late Raymond James Rutledge and Bertha Cox Rutledge. He attended Parker High School. He was a trailblazing entrepreneur in the field of professional photography for 60 years, and after retirement he was employed by Hot Spot in Pickens for 10 years. Mr. Rutledge received many awards and letters of recognition, but amongst his favorites were the recognition from the Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Speaking, Leadership Training and Human Relations, as well as an award for perfect attendance for 10 years at Hot Spot in Pickens. Mr. Rutledge enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking and most of all giving treats to his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Lula, of the home, Mr. Rutledge is survived by his children, Gabriel (Gabe) King of Central, Rachel R. Allen of Tamassee, Paul Rutledge (Melanie) of Easley and Alfred Rutledge (Stephanie) of Easley; his grandchildren, Amanda, Kingston, Jonathan, Cayden, Morgan, Jackson, Micah, Reagan and Henry; and his siblings, Romaine Rutledge (Inez), Ruth Dunn, Elaine Parry (Wallace) and Diane Berry (Curtis).

Mr. Rutledge was predeceased by his parents, a son, Donald Rutledge; a brother, Broadus Rutledge; and a sister, Joan Henderson.

Flowers will be accepted.

Visitation took place on Aug. 21 in the sanctuary of Fairview Independent Baptist Church, located at 130 Fairview Drive in Pickens, with funeral services following with Pastor David Lambert officiating. Burial followed the service at the Old Bethlehem Church cemetery.

JEAN O. STEGALL

GREENVILLE — Jean O. Stegall, 93, widow of Paul Stegall, died on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022.

Born in Pickens, she was the daughter of the late George and Dessie Brezeale O’Shields.

Mrs. Stegall retired from Westcliffe Elementary School, where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a faithful member of Berea First Baptist Church for more than 60 years.

Jean leaves behind her four children, Phil Stegall (Alice), Alan Stegall (Lori), Kay Stegall Miller (Richard) and Chris Stegall (Carla); six grandchildren, Anna, Paul, Karen (Sudan), Mitchell, Elliot and Meredith; four siblings, Grace Dickard (Lloyd), Juanita Dancy, Paul O’Shield and Martha Bates; a brother-in-law, J.W. Gilstrap and a sister-in-law, Betty O’Shields.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, G.W., Bobby and Harold O’Shields; a sister, Mildred Gilstrap.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

CONNIE MEECE PATTERSON

PICKENS — Connie Meece Patterson, 80, loving wife of the late Freeman Patterson Jr., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at Regency Hospital, after an extended illness.

A native of Rosman, N.C., Connie was born on May 6, 1942, to the late Loonie Earl Meece and Fannie Raines Meece. She was a longtime member of Northside Baptist Church, where she loved singing in the choir and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Connie was a loving mother, grandmother and prayer warrior. She loved working in her flower garden, watching and feeding birds, cooking for her family, decorating for and celebrating holidays and helping others.

Survivors include her children, Marsha Patterson (Bill Gravely) of Pickens and Mark Patterson (Carol) of Williamston; her grandchildren, Brandon Patterson (Jessica) of Anderson, Colin Patterson of Anderson and Morgan Davis of Greenwood; her sisters, Ann Harvey of Gray Court and Ellen Gilstrap of Slater; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Freeman Patterson Jr., Connie was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Dovie Whitmire, Dalice Sheppard and infant sister Daisy Meece; and a brother, Earl Meece.
