SYBIL HAYES HUGHES
COLUMBIA — Sybil Hayes Hughes passed to be with the Lord on March 7, 2026, in
Columbia. Sybil Hayes was born in Pickens, on July 1, 1935, to Ossie and Ernestine Hayes. She was married to Glen Hughes in 1949 at the age of 14. They were married for 70 years, until his death in 2020.
As a military family, Sybil and Glen traveled throughout the United States, Panama, and Europe with the U.S. Army. Sybil worked in grocery management until she obtained her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. She later worked in various administrative roles at Ft. Jackson, the National Guard Armory, the Small Business Administration, and the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. She thrived as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and was admired for her seamstress skills and cooking, particularly her baked goods, including her famous coconut and pound cakes.
She is survived by her daughter in law, Cheryl Hughes of Irmo, S.C.; her son, Ralph Hughes (David Temme) of Sacramento, Calif.; her daughter, Gayle Crosby (RC) of St. Matthews, S.C.; and her daughter, Linda Hughes (Kelly Stivers) of Sanford, Fla. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Cindy Bradford, Lisa Mims, Jessica Buzhardt and Chris Hughes, as well as eight great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her son, Steve Hughes; and her great grandson, Dillan Roldan.
Services will be held at St. Andrews Baptist Church on March 11, with visitation preceding the service. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Baptist Church, where she was a devoted congregant for 50 years.
WILLIAM JOSEPH ‘JOEY’ CARTER, JR.
TRAVELERS REST — William Joseph “Joey” Carter, Jr., 47, loving husband of 18 years to Tracey Melissa Bynum Carter, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026, at Prisma Health North Greenville Hospital in Travelers Rest.
Born on Jan. 12, 1979, in Greenville County, Joey was the beloved son of Wanda Revis Cison and the late William J. Carter. From an early age, Joey had a deep love for life and the simple joys it offered.
He found peace and happiness on the water, especially when he was fishing. Some of his most treasured moments were spent playing basketball with his son, sharing laughter, friendly competition, and unforgettable memories. Joey had a passion for music of all kinds and could often be found tinkering with car stereos, always trying to perfect the sound. He also enjoyed collecting baseball cards and never missed an opportunity to sit down and watch The Golden Girls, a show that always brought him a smile.
Above all else, Joey’s greatest love was his family. He cherished his children and grandchildren beyond measure, and his pride in them was evident to everyone who knew him. His love, laughter, and devotion to his family will forever remain in their hearts.
In addition to wife and mother, Joey is survived by his dad, Joey Cison of Easley; children, Haley Carter of Anderson, Branson Carter of Travelers Rest and bonus son, Tyler Robbs (Monica) of Travelers Rest; grandchildren, Waylon Ellenburg, Kason Robbs and one precious Ellenburg grandchild on the way; aunt, Patrica Gossett (Don); cousin, Shane Bryant; friend and fishing buddy, Travis Suddeth; sibling-in-laws, Chad Howard, J.J. (Victoria) Bynum, Amanda Rowland, Derek (Kara) Thompson, Cody (Hannah) Bynum and Casey Bynum; and several cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, Mr. Carter was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, William Felton Revis and Irene Turner Revis.

ROGER LEE SPANGLER
PICKENS — Roger Lee Spangler, 81, loving husband of 60 years to Mary Elizabeth Spangler, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 25, 1944, in McDowell County, W. Va., Roger was the beloved son of the late Maynard Henry Spangler and Norah Crook Spangler. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Roger carried the values of honor, dedication, and service with him throughout his life.
He was a faithful member of Grace Christian Fellowship in Dacusville, where he cherished his church family and his walk of faith. Above all, Roger loved his family dearly and took great pride in providing for them and spending time together.
Roger was a hardworking and well-known member of his community. He operated Spangler’s Amusement Company for many years, bringing joy and entertainment to countless families. He was also the owner of Spangler’s Grocery and Café in Six Mile, where he enjoyed serving friends, neighbors, and visitors alike, always greeting them with a warm smile and friendly conversation.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Spangler of the home; son, Tony Spangler (Lori) of Pickens; daughter, Wanda Lorraine Spangler of Pickens; and niece, Ann Marie Coughlin (John) of Tampa, Fla.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Spangler was predeceased by his grandson, Roger Paul Spangler; brother, Wayne Holbert; and sister, Margaret Sue Spangler.
Funeral service were held on March 9, at the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial took place following the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

CHRISTI METCALF
PICKENS — Christi Metcalf, 68, of Pickens, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Warden and Patsy Glenn Warden, and the loving wife of 51 years to Joey Metcalf.
Christi loved her family deeply. She cherished her children, adored her dog, and enjoyed spending time at the beach. She was known for her strong family values and the love she shared with those closest to her.
Christi is survived by her husband, Joey Metcalf of Pickens; her children, Seth Metcalf of Pickens and Samuel Clark of Greenville; and her siblings, Monty Hann and Max Warden (Jenny). She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Christi was preceded in death by her son, Josh Metcalf.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church.

LINDA CALDWELL BANKS
LIBERTY — Linda Caldwell Banks went to her heavenly home, peacefully, at her residence on March 4, 2026, surrounded by members of her loving family. Born on Sept. 18, 1952, Linda prided herself in being a daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded by her mother and father, John and Peggy Caldwell, and sister Karen Caldwell Banks. She is survived by her loving brother, Stephen Caldwell of Ga.; three sons, Scott (Dawn) Banks, Jonathan (Allyson) Banks and Shawn Banks. She is also survived by her pride and joys, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Linda loved traveling to West Virginia, exploring places of family history, and treasured her loved ones greatly. She was known to always be there when called and loved her family fiercely. She will be deeply missed by those that she devoted her life to loving and caring for.
The family will be hosting a private celebration of life in West Virginia at a later date. The family requests that monetary gifts and donations be made to Hospice of the Upstate in memory of Linda’s life.

BRENDA MARTIN
PICKENS — Brenda Martin, 79, loving wife of 62 years to Gerald C. Martin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday., March 7, 2026, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born on May 1, 1946, in Greenville County, Brenda was the beloved daughter of the late Floyd Elrod and Clara Elrod Jameson. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a wonderful pastor’s wife who faithfully served alongside her husband for 40 years. Brenda enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, dancing, and studying the Bible. She tirelessly cared for others, and her home was always open to family and friends. Brenda was always ready to feed everyone who walked through her door. She was lovingly known as “Badotti” to her grandchildren and all who loved her.
In addition to her husband, Brenda is survived by her children, Tami Sickels (Jim) of Pickens, Brent Martin (Marian) of Greenville and Chris Martin of Seattle, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her son, Shane Martin, and her stepfather, Leo Jameson.
A funeral service will be held on March 15, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

SHANE VICKOUS
EASLEY — Shane Vickous, 55, of Easley, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. He was the beloved son of Melvin and Susan Vickous and the loving husband of Erica Vickous.
Shane was a devoted Husband, Father, Son, Pepaw and friend who loved fiercely with his whole heart. He was known for his loyal nature and was a natural comedian with his corny jokes that could always bring a smile to those around him. Shane cherished his family and valued every moment spent with them. He adored and spoiled his granddaughter, Sophia.
Shane enjoyed fishing and riding his Harley as much as he loved his coffee and bacon. Driving big rigs was his daily life for almost 37 years and he saw a lot of the world over the road. He spent that time making sure to call everyone he loved to share the corny jokes we all loved and looked forward to.
In addition to his wife, Shane is survived by his parents, Melvin and Susan Vickous; his children, Shana, Brittney and Lucas; his granddaughter, Sophia; his brothers, Waylon Vickous (Amy) and Josh Vickous; his in-laws Wesley and Stacy Holder; his brother in law, Casey Matthews; Grandmother in Law, Susan Roeben, his Best Friend, Shala Geraci (Pete, Conner and Riley) as well as numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will all cherish his memory.
Shane was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
DONZIE MCMAHAN
PICKENS — Donzie McMahan, 57, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Upstate Community Hospice House, in Landrum, on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026.
A dedicated and hard-working man, Donzie was employed by Carolina Handling, where he was respected by his peers for his loyalty, reliability, and strong work ethic. Outside of work, Donzie found great joy spending time with his family and in his hobbies and passions. He loved flying RC airplanes and was always on the lookout for model kits to buy, build, and trade. Donzie was known for his kind heart, earnest nature, and easygoing personality. He was the kind of person people naturally liked-someone who was steady, dependable, and genuine.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Wilmot McMahan of Easley; son, Ewan McMahan of Pickens; parents, Bill and Martha McMahan of Cullowhee, N.C.; and brother, Chonzie McMahan (Jennifer) of Arden, N.C.
Donzie was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy and Velma (Wheatley) McMahan and maternal grandparents, Rev. Marion T. and Ressie (Porter) Hudgens.
