• Anderson reunion set for August 26
The decedents of the late J.R. Anderson and Nancy Anderson will have their annual family reunion at the Mountain Grove Baptist Church fellowship Building at 1 p.m. Aug. 26. Plates and cups will be furnished.
• Legion seeks WWII vets for Honor Flight
The Honor Flight Program is looking to reach all World War II veterans. Pete Peters and Richard Reece, who are members of the staff at Honor Flight, are also members of Pickens American Legion Post 11. The two men are seeking WWII veterans who haven’t gone to Washington to see the WWII Memorial Monument.
The cost of the trip for the vet is free. Each veteran will also be assigned a guardian, who will be his extended family for the day and will attend to all his needs. In addition to the WWII Memorial, those on the Honor Flight will visit the Korean, Vietnam, Lincoln and Marine Corp Memorials. Mile Creek Baptist Church to celebrate Homecoming and 140 years of ministry
Six Mile — Mile Creek Baptist Homecoming will held on August 26
Mile Creek Baptist Church will be celebrating 140 years of ministry. Old timey dress is encouraged. The Dixon’s will be sing and Jared Dixon will preach.
Friends, family and former members are invited to come out to this special day.
There will be an 11 a.m. service only (no Sunday school or evening service). Homecoming dinner will follow the service.

EASLEY — The preschool program at St. Matthias Lutheran Church (SMLC) has moved.

Garrett named teacher of the year at Edwards
CENTRAL — Southern Wesleyan University education graduate Mary Cate Garrett was recently named teacher of the year at R.C. Edwards Middle 
School.
Garrett, who is the school’s athletics director, teaches sixth- to eighth-grade physical education and health. She is also an assistant softball coach at nearby Daniel High School.
Garrett’s mother was a teacher, so her interest in teaching began at a young age. She recalls teachers who inspired her and impacted her life, including Mary Elizabeth Freeman, a second-grade teacher who cared about her students as she would her own children.
Although the classes she teaches at R.C. Edwards tend to be large, Garrett tries to learn something about each of her students and feels that it’s important to keep the lines of

• Benefit planned for Anita Owens July 28
All are invited to attend a cancer benefit for Anita Owens at the Ooleney Community Building in Pumpkintown on Saturday, July 28. The event will start at 7 a.m. and will run throughout the day. The benefit will include a raffle, door prizes and a yard sale. Hot dog and barbecue plates will be sold at the event, with live music playing throughout. All proceeds from the event will go toward helping Owens with medical expenses.
• Storytelling event scheduled in Clemson

There will be a storytelling gathering on Tuesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. with Clemson Area StoryTellers at the Arts Center of Clemson, located at 212 Butler St. Come to tell your personal stories, folktales, songs, poems and more or just come to listen. • First responders prayer rally planned
On Aug. 2, Cafe Connections will be hosting its third annual First Responders Public Prayer Rally and Appreciation day. The public is invited to come and be a part of the event. Cafe Connections will feed all the first responders breakfast at 7:30 a.m., and the public prayer rally will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Jake Bartley Band to play in Pickens July 4
PICKENS — The city of Pickens’ annual spring and summer concert series will continue next week and run through the beginning of September.
