Garden club honored
At the September monthly Board meeting of the Pickens County Historical Society, the Pickens Garden Club was presented with a plaque of appreciation for its decades of caring for the Rose Garden at the historic Hagood-Mauldin House and Irma Morris Museum of Fine Arts, a cultural centerpiece of the Pickens community. Easley Presbyterian Church, located at 200 S. 1st St., will be hosting a craft fair this week Thursday through Saturday.

SLED charges ex-detention officer

PICKENS — A former Pickens County Detention Center officer faces multiple charges after an investigation into allegations he had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.
Chester Pierce Ouzts, 58, of Pickens, is charged with misconduct in office, misconduct in office by a public official and first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate, according to a release issued Monday by Renèe Wunderlich,

Clemson police investigate gas station death
CLEMSON — Clemson police detectives are helping the Pickens County Coroner’s Office with a death investigation after an unconscious person was found at a
gas station.
Clemson Police Chief Jorge Campos sent out a news release saying officers responded to a 7-Eleven on Old Greenville Highway at approximately 2:29 p.m. Monday for a report of an unconscious person in the store.
Officers attempted to give lifesaving aid to the person, but were unable to revive them.
No other information was available at press time Tuesday.
Easley woman dies from wreck injuries

EASLEY — An Easley woman died Saturday from injuries she suffered in a wreck last month.
Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the victim as Kathie Lindsey, 72, of Innis Brook Drive.
The three-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday, Aug. 30, on S.C. Highway 8 near Tinsley Drive, two miles south of Easley, according to South Carolina Highway

SC Old Time Fiddlers Convention planned Saturday at Hagood Mill
South Carolina State Fiddling Championship will be decided
PICKENS — As autumn approaches and the leaves turn their brilliant colors, it signals the time for fiddle music in the mountains.
This Friday and Saturday, old-time music will fill the hills and hollers around Hagood Mill as the historic site hosts the S.C. Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
Some of the best musicians from around the Southeast will gather to compete in a variety of categories, with the top fiddler being named South Carolina’s state fiddling champion. The traditional contest goes back to the 1920s, when Clemson University opened the doors of stately Tillman Hall to the local musicians of the nearby South Carolina mountains for a music competition.

SCEMD leader discusses state’s COVID response

STATE — The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a different type of destruction than the disasters the South Carolina Emergency Management Division has responded to in recent years, according to its director.
“There were no infrastructure and residential damages associated with COVID that we normally see in hurricanes and tornadoes and floods,” Kim Stenson said. “However, the impact on our citizens was certainly significant — let’s say probably catastrophic — in terms of deaths and economic instability.”

Bakery has new owner

With pumpkin spice season in full swing, Martha’s Marvelous Munchies in Pickens has a new owner, Ashley Brantley. Brantley has bounced right into Martha’s Marvelous Munchies after previous owner Martha Ellenburg decided to retire. The bakery will be keeping its previous hours, Wednesday through Friday, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and looking to expand to Saturday in the future. Brantley wants to uphold what Ellenburg has done and expand the business into local stores for more access to the delicious treats. The bakery will carry delicacies from biscuits to cakes to cinnamon rolls to pimento cheese and more. Looking forward, Brantley will be adding her personal recipes once the heat of the holidays cools off.
