DHEC: Livestock possibly exposed to rabid horse

CENTRAL — A horse from Central tested positive for rabies last month, according to a news release from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The horse was from the Browning Road and Maw Bridge Road area and was in Georgia when it began showing symptoms, the release said.

The animal was submitted to Georgia’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for testing on Feb. 23 and was confirmed to have rabies

Virtual town hall set to discuss deadly fentanyl

COUNTY — The Prevention Department of Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County will host a virtual town hall meeting on Facebook Live at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15.

Easley student shares top prize in electric cooperative contest

COLUMBIA — Micah Jordan, a native of Easley and student at Clemson University’s Honors College, is part of a team that claimed the top scholarship prize of $5,000 in the “Pay it Forward” competition sponsored by South Carolina’s electric cooperatives. John Harden Scholarship applications now available

PICKENS — Cannon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is now accepting applications for the John Harden Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship, established in memory of Dr. John M. Harden, is awarded annually to a person continuing their education to work in a health care field. Eligible candidates are students from Pickens High School, Liberty High School and Lakeview Christian School.

Riding in style

Market at the Mill officials held a surprise fundraiser to benefit one of their own, Pickens County resident Mike Hart, presenting him with with an electric scooter on Valentine’s Day weekend. The scooter was presented to Hart by Brian Barner at the Market at the Mill on Feb. 12. Some store vendors and other caring people in the community made this day possible. Hart has medical issues and needs a mobility scooter to get around better. “This is a blessing and will make my life easier,” Hart said. Hart was very thankful to all the people who donated.

Sheriff’s office captain arrested

EASLEY — A captain with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office was charged with driving under the influence following a single-vehicle incident last week.
