Ribbon cut on homeless shelter

PICKENS — On Monday morning, the Greater Pickens Chamber of Commerce held a long-awaited ribbon-cutting for the Pickens Shelter of Hope, Pickens County’s only homeless shelter.

Work to begin on Table Rock overlook pull-off

COUNTY — Many visitors stop on S.C. Highway 11 to take pictures of Table Rock, the most photographed natural feature in the state.

A project that will make stopping and taking those pictures safer at the Grant Meadow overlook has gone out to bid.

County administrator Ken Roper discussed the overlook and other park matters during his update to county council during its May 3 meeting.

County establishing guidelines for American Rescue Plan funds

COUNTY — County officials want to be sure that any spending of Pickens County’s allocation from the American Rescue Plan does not come under federal scrutiny at a later date.

Big Cliff’s cuts ribbon

On Friday, April 30, the Greater Pickens Chamber of Commerce held the formal grand opening for Big Cliff’s BBQ. While Big Cliff’s BBQ has been open for a couple of months, owner J.C. Smith waited to have the ribbon cutting on the same weekend as his mom’s 70th birthday. POWDERSVILLE — As time wound down in Monday night’s Class 3A Upper State championship matchup between Daniel and Powdersville, both teams struggled to get over the gap and take control.

LIBERTY — Kelley Norwine believes Liberty is “a well-kept secret.”

Norwine and other organizers of the Liberty BBQ & Jeep Festival hope many people will discover the city while attending the event Saturday.

“We’re excited about it,” she said. “We’ve been working hard on it.”

Deal to preserve iconic Table Rock vista

COUNTY — Table Rock is the most photographed natural wonder in South Carolina, and for years, images of the mountain have been captured by visitors from Grant Meadow, the hay meadow at its base.

A collaboration between landowner Hoyt Grant and several conservation groups will ensure that no development will ever mar future photographs.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning at the meadow to celebrate the addition of 21 acres of the property to a conservation agreement established in 2013.
