Local churches hold breakfast to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

PICKENS — Area churches came together Monday to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Griffin Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pickens hosted the Community Prayer Breakfast Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday morning.
Pickens Presbyterian Church Elder Bill Ranson served as emcee. He said the community prayer breakfast has been held for 19 years, and he’s been able to attend all but one of them.

VA officer, supporter ask delegation for changes

COUNTY — The county’s interim Veterans Affairs officer asked members of the Pickens County Legislative Delegation to consider implementing changes that would allow his office to handle its caseload.
Walt Carter addressed the delegation during its annual meeting held in Pickens County Council chambers on Jan. 13.
The following evening, Carter gave some more details about the office when he spoke at a Six Mile Town Council meeting.
Carter assumed his role in June 2023.

Liberty wrestlers reach milestones at County wrestling championships
Three Liberty High School wrestlers reached huge milestones during the Pickens County Wrestling Championships last Friday. Liberty senior and Limestone signee J.T. Spence broke the school record for wins surpassing Cole Murphy’s record of 169 wins, while junior Alex Allison and senior Bray Cain each reached 100 career varsity wins.
A look at the life and influence of Dr. King
Martin Luther King Jr. played a pivotal role in race relations in the United States for nearly a decade. He helped secure the end of legal segregation of African-American citizens, created the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and served as a source of inspiration for black individuals across the globe.
Dr. King did not begin his life as a crusader or public figure. He had much more modest beginnings in rural Atlanta. Born Michael King, Jr., he was the middle child of Michael King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. Michael King, Sr. served as pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church upon the death of his father-in-law, who was the church’s prior pastor. At this point, the elder king decided to change his name to Martin Luther to honor the famed Protestant religious leader. His son soon decided to adopt the name as well.

Pickens council approves $3.8 million deal with Greenville Water

PICKENS — Nearly six months after withdrawing from the Pickens Regional Joint Water System (PRJWS), Pickens City 
Council voted on a long-term Capacity buy-in and supply agreement with Greenville Water on Monday.
Council voted to approve the agreement by a 5-1 margin with councilman Floyd Rogers as the lone dissenting vote.

YMCA provides Bibles for children’s holiday camp

EASLEY — An effort to place Bibles in young hands has proved more successful than YMCA staff originally hoped.
YMCA of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville president and CEO Sid Collins spoke about the effort during the Dec. 30 Pickens United meeting.

Pickens County Council welcomes new members

COUNTY — Pickens County Council welcomed two new members to its governing body last week.
Dale Holloway and Scott Lang joined returning members Chris Bowers and Alex Saitta for a swearing-in ceremony prior to the first meeting of 2025.
Holloway succeeds Henry Wilson as the District 6 representative.
Holloway told The Journal on Tuesday that he was excited to begin his tenure.
