CENRAL — The School District of Pickens County Board of Trustees has approved the selection of Chris Stone as the next Head Football Coach of D.W. Daniel High School.

Stone brings a combination of leadership, coaching expertise, and passion for community-centered athletics. A graduate of Eastside High School and varsity football player at the collegiate level at Clemson University and Furman University, Stone has most recently served as the Head Football Coach and CATE teacher at Walhalla High School. In 2024, he was named All-Mountain Lakes Coach of the Year after leadingWalhalla to several h Stone’s coaching career reflects varied experience at the varsity and junior varsity levels, as well as on both sides of the ball. His previous roles include:

  • Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Mauldin High School (2019-2023)
  • Offensive Coordinator at Easley High School (2016-2019)
  • Defensive Assistant at Mauldin High earlier in his career
  • Coordinator experience coaching quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, and outside linebackers
  • Selected as Quarterbacks Coach in the 2019 High School Blitz All-Star Game

4 charged in Table Rock fire

COUNTY — South Carolina Forestry Commission law enforcement officials have arrested three teens on charges related to the origin of a fire that has burned more than 13,000 acres at Table Rock.

Officers arrested 19-year-old Nyzaire Jah-Neiz Marsh of Taylors and 18-year-old Greenville residents Tristan Tyler and Isaac Wilson on Tuesday morning,

Blaze 30 percent contained

COUNTY — Firefighters, other first responders and ordinary residents alike welcomed the rain that began to fall on the highest priority wildfire in the entire country over the weekend.

Inaugural Waffle Fest a succes for Liberty

The City of Liberty hosted the inaugural S.C. Waffle Festival presented by the U.S. Waffle Company on Saturday. Citizens from around the Upstate were able to enjoy the free festival which featured live music, a kid zone and many waffle-based contests.

CLEMSON — On a weekday morning, Clemson University students rushed to board the Blue Route Tiger Transit bus at a remote commuter parking lot to get to class on time. The doors swung open to reveal the warm, inviting smile of their bus driver, Arthur Lynn Collins. Jr.

Students affectionally call him “Mr. Lynn.” He welcomes every passenger who steps on his bus with that inviting smile, no matter the time of day. The students also encounter his signature bowl of candy and rows of colorful rubber ducks that line the bus’s dashboard.

Young innovators shine at the science fair

CENTRAL — Southern Wesleyan University proudly hosted the 2025 South Carolina Region 1 Science Fair welcoming over seventy bright young scientists from Anderson, Abbeville, Laurens, Greenville, Greenwood, Oconee, and Pickens counties. Students in grades 3 -12 showcased their innovative research and competed across 22 STEM categories.

The event celebrated the hard work and creativity of the next generation of STEM leaders, offering scholarships, prizes, and opportunities to advance to national and international competitions, including the Regeneron International Science
