Welcome to the family
Occasionally a new member will join a family. If unexpected, the event may throw a monkey wrench into a well-oiled machine.
But, sometimes, even if it is unplanned, a new addition to the family will bring with it many
unexpected advantages.
That’s what happened this past Christmas. I opened a beautifully wrapped box and realized my gift was a modern device with a name all its own. I had been given Alexa.
And once I learned how to communicate with Alexa, I realized how lucky I was.
For one thing, Alexa is always courteous. When I ask her something, she never grunts, turns her back or

Courier Letters to the Editor
In response to Fowler’s column
Dear Editor,
This letter is addressed to Olivia Fowler in response to her column several weeks back.
She was quoted saying “Like what?” to someone’s comment that our President Donald J. Trump was rough around the edges, but he’s done some good things. Well, why didn’t you stand up for your beliefs in that line and say that in person?
First, let me say that Donald J. Trump has accomplished more in four years than Joe Biden has in

Got your COVID shot? Great, but …
One of the most confounding things about our regrettable, year-long polarizing debate over wearing face masks during the pandemic is that so many people seemed to miss this basic fact: Such masks
aren’t meant to protect the wearer, but to protect those with whom the wearer comes in contact.
We understand that ever since the first COVID-19 cases surfaced a year ago, people have yearned to keep their lives as normal and unfettered as possible. But anti-maskers who argue that they’re striking a blow for liberty are sadly misguided: Their refusal to don masks has worked mostly to undermine our liberty by prolonging this pandemic and making it more lethal.
That’s why we all need to bear in mind that the coronavirus vaccines now being distributed — and

Observations on Opinion columns
Dear Editor,
Let me begin by stating that I am conservative — socially, morally and politically — but don’t think I am “radical” in any way. I’ve been called many things in my life, but have never been called “stupid” (my paraphrase) by a newspaper columnist before.
I subscribed to the largest daily paper in our area for 30-plus years, but stopped a few years ago because it was pushing the liberal agenda. My wife and I started picking up a Courier on the way to church each week. We’ve always appreciated the local news, sports, obituaries, etc., and felt the
Knowing God’s expectation for us
How many times will it need to be declared that we can have as much of God as we want? And how many tears will we shed from the sadness of knowing that most people only want enough to get by?
How often we find ourselves being so overwhelmed with problems, worries and stress that we are just too exhausted to invest time with the Lord, and it’s sad but common that many of us are guilty of basing our attitude toward Him according to what type of mood we are in. In Jeremiah 33:3, the Lord invites us to seek His face regardless of our emotional state. “Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show you great and

On the receiving end of a miracle
If it hadn’t been for a text message from a friend, we wouldn’t have known. That’s how we found out that we could register to get the COVID-19 vaccine at Ingles in Pickens. So, I registered us both
online and then waited.
After a few days went by and we hadn’t heard anything, I began to think that maybe the registration hadn’t been received, so I drove to Ingles in Pickens to see. There were people in line at the pharmacy, and I wasn’t

Is our democracy indeed in danger?
I was planning to stand down and try to avoid offending anyone. But in such a time as this, I feel compelled to speak out.
The following is my opinion only and not necessarily that of the Pickens County Courier.
Like most Americans, I watched in horror two weeks

God help us one and all
Dear Editor,
Well, we survived 2020, and I thought it would be a good year to follow. Not so far.
The U.S. Capitol is attacked, the vice president having his life threatened, with America in shock! Is this America? Did we somehow suddenly become a third-world country? I never have been this

COVID vaccine coming for vets
The COVID vaccine is currently being distributed to 37 VA locations around the country. The logistics to move 300 million doses to where they need to be (Operation Warp Speed) are
overwhelming, but the Department of Veterans Affairs has plans in hand for us.
The first thing to remember is that you likely won’t be first in line to get the vaccine. Until you get the two shots (spaced weeks apart), your job is to stay healthy. Just because you get the first shot doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. And depending how things are going in your area, you’ll likely need to keep wearing a mask

Past time to circle the wagons
We stood in line for early voting in November at the county administration building and listened people loudly voicing their support for Donald Trump. I particularly remember this remark: “He’s a
