I shouldn’t complain, because I am alive and feeling good today.

I shouldn’t complain, because I am alive and feeling good today.

And a lot of people have been through a lot worse than what I have in this pandemic.

But the past month has been an ordeal for me, a guy who has rarely been sick in almost 67 years of life.

Here’s how it happened.

I woke up on Saturday morning, Aug. 29, and my lungs felt kind of funny, like I had slept in a weird position and got them shifted out of place or something. Then I started having a headache and body aches, like the flu coming on.

I wouldn’t have been too worried about it, because I had a flu-like illness around the same time last year,

Lingering effects of COVID-19 infections

So far, there have been more than 6.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. More than 200,000 people have died from COVID-19-related complications, making COVID the third-leading cause of death in the U.S.

In S.C., there have been more than 140,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 3,000 confirmed deaths.

Most people who contract COVID-19 do recover. CDC defines recovery as:

(1) At least 10 days have passed since the start of

A guide to agreeably disagreeing

Back in the olden days when I was a child, our family had heated political discussion at the dinner table. Not heated in an angry way, but passionate, in an interesting way.

We all participated. And everyone contributed their opinions. But there was a rule, unspoken but followed. Everyone had the right to disagree.

When there was a point being debated, the arguments had to be backed up with facts. It was alright to hold different views on issues, but when your particular view was stated, the reason for your view on an issue had to be explained.

We could disagree. But we couldn’t accuse those who disagreed with us of stupidity, ignorance or insanity. We couldn’t call anyone a liar or get up and leave the

Keepers of tradition

Dear Editor,

I read the story titled, “DNR denies permit for Jocassee Gorges event.” DNR said the decision was made to deny the permit for the cycling event after hearing the public comments.

I attended the meeting and agree with DNR’s decision, though my reasoning was a bit broader.

For those who didn’t attend the meeting or missed the article, the overall question was whether DNR should approve an event that could lead to the commercialization of the Jocassee Gorges.

Decisions that touch on or deal with local tradition center on the question of who has the standing

Vaccines — how do they work?

When a bacteria or virus enters our body, it attacks and multiplies. This invasion is an infection that causes us to become ill. Do we have a mechanism to fight this intrusion? Yes, it is called our immune system. It is a system that recognizes this invasion and sets off a response from a variety of white cells in our body that seek out and destroy the enemy. An analogy would be likened to a missile defense system in military terms. Such as, if a missile was fired at us from an enemy source, our defense system would recognize it and unleash our own missile that would intercept and destroy it, keeping us safe.

So in turn, what can a vaccine do for us? If

We can always hope for better things to come

This is 2020. Things have changed. Young women today who have children may have never been told that the reason they will not be hired for a job is because they have children.

But it used to happen. And I do speak from experience.

When our youngest child started school, a “help wanted” ad ran for a position at the radio station. They were looking for an advertising copy writer. I applied for the job and was called for an interview. Great!

When I went in for the interview, everything went well. Until I was asked if I had children. The answer was yes. And then I was told that I would have gotten the job if I didn’t have children. The station owner told me having

Making a choice to rearrange priorities

Praying to God in faith is one of the most important deeds we can do. Why? Because prayer is the foundation of our relationship with Jesus and reveals how serious we are about obeying Him.

It seems very likely that our sincerity and love are measured by our prayer life. Someone asked, if praying were our full-time job, would we still be employed? The Lord is not impressed with our words or even our works as much as He is with our devotion to the secret place of meditation and intercession. Have you been sensing the Holy Spirit speaking to you lately about

Speaking on Lehmacher’s experience

Dear Editor,

I have worked with S.C. House District 3 candidate Eunice Lehmacher over the past several years to help families challenged by dementia.

In one of our most successful collaborations, we worked with community members to establish a day program in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Seneca for those with early to mid-stage dementia. Eunice is passionate about helping those who often do not have a voice find the

Monarchs are passing through

We haven’t seen a monarch butterfly in our yard for more than three years. The population has been decimated during several decades due to climate change, increased use of pesticides, land development and loss of both their host plants and habitat to the point that biologists warn they may be facing extinction.

They lay their eggs on the milkweed plant, because it is the only food the monarch caterpillars eat.

They used to fly by the millions en masse each spring en route to Canada and again in the fall, when they began their migration back to Mexico.

Yesterday when I was watering flowers, I was amazed and heartened by seeing three monarch butterflies

The knowledge of good and evil

As Christians, we often think the world does not know about God and this is the reason they go about their merry way being captivated by sin. This may be partly true, as they do not understand all the details about the Bible and what God wants from them, however every human has inherited the ability to know right from wrong.

Originally, Adam and Eve were not concerned about sin and were not controlled by their Maker, but were given free will to make their own decisions. After they fell from the Garden of Eden and were told they would
