How’s it going? No, really. How are you?

Here we are in the middle of winter with the shorter days, the lower temps and depending where we are, snow and ice on the sidewalk and roads, holiday stresses …

Some of us aren’t doing well. We’ve been faking it through the holidays, smiling and greeting people, but deep down inside we

Loving God is knowing His will and doing it

Most of us have heard the 1969 song, “More Today than Yesterday” by the band Spiral Staircase. The chorus says, “I love you more today than yesterday, but not as much as tomorrow.” I had not heard it for a while, but I’m sensitive to music and often a song will trigger my emotions and then I start asking the Lord about what is the hidden message within the music. It’s a catchy tune that has a happy

Need for EMS stations

Dear Editor,

There are 9 EMS stations in Pickens County – 3 in Easley, 1 in Dacusville, Pickens, Holly Springs, Liberty, Central and Six Mile. Easley by far has the highest call volume. Often times when Easley’s 3 ambulances are out on calls or stuck in Greenville waiting for a bed to open up at the hospital, the Dacusville unit has to run down to Easley as back-up. Or the Pickens ambulance has to shift over toward Easley, and in turn Holly Springs’ unit has to come down to Pickens to plug that hole.

Lo and behold there is a call on Highway 11, then the Holly Springs unit has to back track up to Highway 11 or the Vineyards or River Bluff. This shifting that often

Wild turkey or bald eagle?

The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 when 50 Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World with 90 Wampanoag natives. The celebration lasted three days. According to historical records, the feast consisted of deer, turkey, fish, and corn. Pumpkin pie is not listed but I feel sure they had some kind or pumpkin or, at least, a squash casserole.

This is a true and historic account that explains why we eat turkey on Thanksgiving and why the bald eagle was chosen

Be more like the bonobos

We could all learn a lesson from the bonobos.

“The who?” you say.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember ever hearing of such a thing as a bonobo until last week, when I read about a study published in the journal Science describing their remarkable behavior.

They’re similar to chimpanzees, except that chimps, who seem so playful and adorable when we befriend them, become violent, bloodthirsty warriors when they come across another tribe of their species in the wild.

Bonobos, who must be the most morally advanced primates on the planet, are kind to members of other tribes. The

The tooth of the matter

During the Revolutionary War, the only dental requirement was that a soldier had to have teeth strong enough to bite the end off a bullet casing in order to properly load his gun.

Our nation’s first forensic dentist was Paul Revere. He took part in the Boston Tea Party and was made famous for his

The oneness of mankind

The oneness of mankind means that all of humanity, with all our amazing diversity and variety, are all fundamentally many parts of a unified and complete whole. Why is this a challenging and difficult concept? Because we are trained and conditioned to think of our differences as a cause of division and separateness. But what does God teach us?

As people of Faith, we look to God, who is our guide and educator, as to what is true and right. We happily let go of the

Remember to be thankful

Dear Editor,

Be thankful. You can go to bed and not have to worry about being blown up by missiles or cannon fire. Be thankful if you have three full meals a day. Be thankful you can travel from town to town and not have to fill out paperwork as to where you’re going. Be thankful that you can complain about the government and not fear being

Jesus did not call us to be a benchwarmer

I’ve watched Kentucky basketball since I was a kid and I admit that sometimes I do get a little carried away.

I was reading an article a few years ago and was intrigued by a comment from the father of one of the players, who by the way was a top 10 NBA draft pick. He was asked about the first time he recognized that his son was going to be a special player, and he explained that it had a lot to do with the way he held the ball even at an early age.

He went on to say his son’s body language revealed a deep bonding connection, a reverential respect and a level of love

Upset about Performing Arts Center board mess

Dear Editor,

It was upsetting to read about the mess the PAC Foundation Board is in.

There needs to be an investigation of everyone involved in this scandal. I can’t believe our Pickens County Council has been so careless about so much money. What other departments or boards have the same problems, but no one is following up on how our tax money is being spent? Sounds to me like embezzlement has been going on.

I urge the appropriate officials to thoroughly investigate this and charge the guilty people.
