The cost of being close to God

We talked about taking a stand for Christ last week, but being a Christian is also a walk which in the light of scripture refers to conduct.

Ephesians’ second chapter mentions how we once walked with the world fulfilling the lust of our flesh,

A riveting exploration of risk taking

Dear Editor,

“Eyes of a Spore,” by Kyle Johanesson, is a historical fiction novel available via Barnes and Noble with a plot eloquently intertwined with gems of romance, coming of age and adventure. The plot revolves around John Vurduct, who has recently inherited his deceased father’s tailor shop in 1850s Independence, Mo. He lives each day in excruciating monotony with Victoria, his love

Kittens versus senior cats

One of my easy-to-accomplish resolutions for 2024 was to adopt a kitten, maybe 2-3 months in age. After consulting the local humane society’s website and seeing dozens of tiny cats listed, I paid a visit to the shelter’s group kitten room.

Of course they were cute, swinging from the chandeliers, racing, climbing and tumbling. And of course they were completely uninterested in the humans in the room who were smiling and

Here we go again

I’m not the only one who has opted, once again, to stay home. Both the rec center and the senior center are cutting back on classes and hours because of the lack of participation, again, but mostly because of the sudden increase in cases of COVID, again. Of course this could include the

Champagne, kisses, and hangovers

Being thrust into a new year is stressful and a little “toast” gives you the courage to admit mistakes of the past and the strength to face the future. You can’t toast the future with just any old drink, certainly not a beer, it’s too ordinary. Margaritas are too salty. Wine is too bland. It should be something bubbly and sparkly and expensive — like

New Year’s musings

Dear Editor,

Just a few words on New Year’s Day.

New Year’s is here. How time flies the older you become! I remember old superstitions about New Year’s from when I was growing up.

Things like don’t take the ashes out of the stove on New Year’s Day. Supposed to be bad luck. If a woman is the first

What does standing for God mean to you?

It’s the New Year and everyone is celebrating a fresh start and making resolutions. However, simply wishing that our lives would change for the better, is nothing more than a fantasy or whim that will not just magically happen. It is said that over eighty percent of resolutions fail within the first month. Why? We must develop a strong vision of what

What to look for in a nursing home

Choosing a nursing home isn’t easy, even in the best of circumstances. Whether it’s for you or a spouse, or for your parents, for now or for later, there are things you need to know and red flags to beware of.

Every day is a new opportunity

I hope everyone is having blessed holidays with family and friends. Spending time with those you love is much more meaningful than all the customs and traditions. The same is true with our spiritual lives, as it comes down to our personal relationship with God and the peace and joy we have living in His presence.

I’ve spoken with several people over the last few weeks who have no family

A rant on the safety of our children

Dear Editor,

Just an old senior life citizen of Pickens County ranting a little.

About three months ago, I called the county works department and requested a sign for my neighborhood. We have like 18 homes in this subdivision, and up until a couple of years ago, all of us were elderly folks. There is no exit out other than to go back out the way you came in. It has one 20 mph speed limit sign on the right as soon as you enter.

Since we have had a few who have sold and moved, younger families have bought and have small children. Myself and a
