History will have the final say
Dear Editor,
The game of politics is often played by those adept at promoting their own interests under the guise of public service. Some of the greatest con artists of all time have romped across the nation mouthing platitudes, but their words mean nothing.
Learning that Donald Trump, the moving force behind a failed coup, is to be the honored guest of the city of Pickens in celebration of

Collapsing culverts a recurring theme?
When you see dump trucks rolling down the street in front of your house — backwards — you might suspect that something weird is going on.
Then you remember that a water main on your street busted — twice — the day before, and that there is now a hole in the road at the bottom of the hill.
Then you realize that the trucks are going in reverse because they can’t turn around. Because the road is

The friends and family of Cold Springs Missionary Baptist Church and Mrs. Loree Hightower would like to thank our community of Pickens, for all your love and support during our hot dog/ yard sale, and we look forward to serving you again.
Please look for our next announcement in the Pickens County Courier as we plan our next event to help in the renovation of God’s house. We are that little church setting on the hillside, where all are welcome and prayers are free! Please continue to help us let our light shine as it has

The enigmatic tattoo
Polynesian cultures have adorned their bodies with artistic designs for centuries. The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word “tatau.”
During the 1700s, Capt. Cook’s exploration of the Pacific revealed this unique art form to sailors. The tattoos separated the seamen from the landlubbers and served as a protective charm. A tattoo of an anchor indicated the sailor had crossed the Atlantic, while a compass or nautical

God did that
Within the unlimited amount of evidence to prove that God is real and the Creator of all things, there is no greater example than the sun, Earth and moon.
The average person does not wake up in the morning and rush to the window to see if the sun is going to rise, or if the Earth is being drawn into a black hole. Neither would anyone jump up and down just to make sure the levels of gravity did not change during the night or if the oxygen,

Selling Easley residents on growth’s good?
There’s “a popular new place to live” in the Upstate, a Greenville Chamber of Commerce official is quoted as saying in a recent article in a Greenville newspaper.
This popular town “is emerging as the new destination for workers and families,” adds an organization called the South Carolina Community Alliance, which used the chamber of commerce quote to bolster its assertion.
“Officials” of this wonderfully popular town “are creating new residential options — with an

The pothole dilemma
As we travel down the road of life, we find some roads are smooth, and some roads have potholes. It’s the time of year when potholes start popping up in roads like weeds in a flower garden. When you pull up a weed, two more pop up in its place. When a hole is patched, two more
will pop up down the road. Meanwhile, when it rains, the pothole that got patched washes out, and now you are dodging three potholes.
Potholes got their name from potters who would dig deep ruts in the roads to get to the clay

Conservative group airs grievances
Dear Editor,
This is an email sent to all of our county council members:
Conservatives of the Upstate members need to air out our grievances. We are not pleased with the votes half of this council has cast over the past couple of years. We wish to enumerate those grievances. Three of you, in particular, will soon be up for reelection.
- You voted for allowing alcohol on county properties and supported the Sunday alcohol sales referendum, which further endangeredYou must be logged in to view this content.

Birds of a feather flock together
There is a huge difference between personal transformation and just talking and wishing. We can counsel, advise, pray and encourage someone, but they are the only ones who can discipline their thoughts, take the initiative and chart a new direction.
For example, being an optimistic person does not fall out of the air and happen on its own, but rather it’s a learned behavior similar to developing bad habits such as a negative attitude or a rude personality. We cannot prevent unpleasant things from happening to us, but we decide if

Spying sealife, smiling selfies and senatorial selection
Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any crazier, a Russian spy whale was spotted some 900 miles away from where he was supposed to be.
Yes, a Russian “spy whale.” First, their spy balloon blows off-course (supposedly) right over us, and now this!
But the story I saw was not about the Russians employing a Kraken to spy on us. Apparently we
