Flame reach third round for first time since 1989

PICKENS — After cruising to victory in the first round over South Aiken, the sixth-ranked Pickens Blue Flame girls’ basketball team expected a greater challenge on Saturday night against the 10th-ranked Riverside Warriors.

Instead, the Blue Flame were able to control the game in its entirety, playing arguably their most complete game of the season in a resounding 72-42 win to advance to state quarterfinals for only the second time in program history.

“To be able to reach this point, I have no words,” Pickens junior Maggie Chambers said. “It’s almost too hard to explain, but I love it. To be able to spend every day

“We’ve said all year, ‘Work hard and you’ll earn your trophy. They’re just going to present it to you when you get there,’” Burrell said. “We’ve come close so many times and fallen short. This time we weren’t
