Lions fall short in Christmas tourney

CENTRAL — After a slow start to the season, the Daniel Lions boys’ basketball team got back on track during its annual Christmas tournament last week.
Following a 1-4 start to the season, the Lions got off to a great start in tournament play against Liberty on Dec. 21 with a 68-38 win.

Pickens Lady Blue Flame basketball remains unbeaten
PICKENS — The Pickens High School girls’ basketball team beat the Palmetto Lady Mustangs twice last week to run its record to a perfect 4-0.
The high-flying Lady Blue Flame are averaging 60 points per game through their first four games.

Upper State champions
The Easley High School competitive cheerleading team is one step closer to a state championship after taking first place at the state qualifier last week. The Green Wave scored 274 points in the competition to best second-place A.C. Flora’s 267 points and third-place Catawba Ridge’s 257. The Easley cheerleading squad is led by seniors Emma Arnold, Trinitee Atkins, Jonna Harper, Carolina LeCroy, Haleigh Myhand, Bree Sewell, Erica Sheriff, Courtney Smith, Hadley West and Rileigh Williams. The Green Wave will compete for the state championship Saturday in Florence.
Devils announce volleyball honors

LIBERTY — After missing the playoffs the last two seasons, the Liberty Red Devil volleyball team bounced back this year to finish 9-1 in the regular season and win the Region I-2A championship.
While the Red Devils’ playoff run was ultimately cut short in the first round against Landrum, accolades continue to roll in for the program after their return-to-form season, with two players being named to the S.C. Class 2A all-state team, among a number of other accomplishments.

Liberty football coach resigns

LIBERTY — After a trying season in 2020, the Liberty High School Red Devils will have to replace long-tenured head football coach Kyle Stewart heading into the 2021 season.
Stewart, who is also the school’s athletic director, announced his resignation late last week, according to School District of Pickens County spokesman John Eby.
A 2002 Easley High School graduate, Stewart began his coaching career with a seven-year tenure as an assistant for the Green Wave before leaving for Liberty as an assistant in 2010.
