MONNIE LEE BROOME

GREENVILLE — Monnie Lee Broome, 82, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023.

Monnie was born in Spartanburg, on Aug. 15, 1941 to parents Emmett M. and Ada White Broome.  He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School (1959) where he served as president of his class.  Monnie helped plan class reunions for 60 years where he enjoyed close relationships with many of his classmates. He met the “love of his life,” Jackie Gravely while attending the University of S.C. on athletic scholarship.  He transferred to Wofford College where he participated in football as a scholarship athlete. He graduated in 1964 and continued to be a strong supporter of Wofford throughout his life.

He joined JP Stevens & Company (Greenville) and spent his entire career in the textile industry. In 2014 he retired as Executive Vice President of Human Resources from JPS Industries.

During his career, Monnie was President and Board Member of the Carolina Society for Training and Development, two-time Chairman of the HR Division of SC Textile Manufacturers Association, Board Member of the S.C. Textile Manufacturers Association, Member of Society for Human Resources Management, Chairman of the Regional Educational Association Advisory Board for Greenville County, Chairman of North Greenville University Advisory Council, and member of the Poinsett Club.

During retirement, he enjoyed spending time at Litchfield Beach and Lake Keowee.  When his children were young he was a devoted third grade Sunday school teacher at Edwards Road Baptist Church.

Monnie was a strong yet humble person who will be remembered for the many lives he touched. He instilled the values of faith, family, and education in both his children and grandchildren.  He always went the extra mile to help those around him. Monnie had a huge heart and always desired to do “the right thing.”  His was a life well-lived and well-loved.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jackie; daughter Leah Broome Tankersley; son, Nathan Broome (Katie); grandchildren Charlie Tankersley (Avery), Anna Tankersley, Jack Tankersley, Emmett Broome and Savannah Broome; brother, Gerald D. Broome along with beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

RICHARD ‘RICKY’ MATTHEW MATHIS, SR.

PICKENS — Richard “Ricky” Matthew Mathis, Sr., 41, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 1, 1982, in Greenville County, Ricky was the son of Betty Stewart Scruggs and the late Danny Mathis. Mr. Mathis loved his family dearly and adored his children. He enjoyed installing pools. He loved fishing for anything that would bite and selling at auctions.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Matthis is survived by his wife, Morgan Mathis; his fiancé, Vanessa Edwards; his children, Faith Ann Sands of Charleston, Patience Nicole Mathis of Pickens, Alexis Ann Mathis of Slabtown, Autumn Ryley Smith of Belton, Joseph Richard Zachary Mathis of Easley, Linda Marie Mathis of Greenville, Richard Matthew Mathis, Jr. of Pickens, Annie Clara Mathis of Pickens, Nicole Edwards, Jason Edwards, Ella Marie Wilson and Bentley Nealey of Pickens; siblings, Addie Monkus, Danny Mathis (Katie), Jerry Mathis (Trisha), Tiffany Bryant (Justin), Josh Mathis, Travis McCall; and grandchildren, Charlotte Grace Day and Austin Akira Coppedge.

In addition to his father, Mr. Mathis was predeceased by his grandparents, Grover Mathis and Annie Ruth Mathis.

The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

ROBERT B. “BOB” MOORE

LIBERTY — Robert B. “Bob” Moore, 80, of Ext. Old Pendleton Road, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, at his residence. Born in Greenville, he was the husband to Beatrice Lewis Moore for over 60 years and a son of the late Kathryn Moore.

He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and worked his entire career in the textile industry. He was a member of Easley First Pentecostal Holliness Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a step-daughter, Linda Rampey (Ken) of Liberty; a step-son, Dale Cox (Gwen) of Pelzer; several nieces and nephews; and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pat Hudson and Mary Thompson; and a step-daughter, Peggy Bannister.

No services are planned at this time.

EYDIE ROBINSON

EASLEY — Eydie Pilgrim Robinson, 72, a beloved mother, daughter, sister and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

Eydie was born on Nov. 6, 1951, in LaFrance. She was the widow of Franklin DeLane Robinson and a daughter of the late David Edrew Pilgrim.

She dedicated her life to her family and her career in the hospitality industry. After obtaining her high school diploma from Daniel High School, she joined forces with her loving husband, Frank Robinson, and together they worked tirelessly at TravelEze Motel of Easley for over two decades.

Eydie’s dedication to her work and her innate ability to create unforgettable experiences led her to a successful retirement from Fairfield Marriott Hotels in 2000.

Eydie was not only a hardworking professional but also a loving and devoted family woman. The times she spent with her loved ones were the moments she cherished most.

Whether it was hosting family gatherings, sharing laughter-filled meals or simply enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren, Eydie’s love and warmth created lasting memories for all who knew her.

Surviving are her mother, Christine Maxey Pilgrim of Central; her two daughters, Misty Gomez-Cortes (Alfredo) of Easley and Heather Black (Philip) of Easley; a son, Travis Robinson of Easley; three sisters, Nancy Greer, Laura Holder and Cheree Aiken; five brothers, Leroy Pilgrim, Jimmy Pilgrim, Keith Pilgrim, Greg Pilgrim and Brent Pilgrim; four granddaughters, Gabbi Gillespie, Lexi Gillespie, Ella Black and Lily Grace Black; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edrew Pilgrim and Danny Pilgrim.

Funeral services to honor Eydie’s life will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel.  She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Liberty Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

While her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit, love, and the memories created in her company will forever reside in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. May she find eternal peace and be remembered as a beacon of love and strength.

JAMES ‘JIMMY’ E. CAMP

EASLEY — Mr. James “Jimmy” Ellery Camp, 76, husband of Judith “Judy” Craig Camp, went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Hubert Ellery Camp and the late Lula Black Camp. Mr. Camp was a graduate of Easley High School, retired from Nabisco and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Bates Masonic Lodge, Easley #189 AFM.

Jimmy was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved his family dearly, but his greatest love was for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jimmy will be dearly missed by all that loved and knew him.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 48 years, are his sons; James Scott Camp of Williamston and Dwayne Lothridge (Connie) of St. Stephens, S.C.; and his grandson, Jared Seth Camp (Samantha) of Belton. In addition to his parents, Mr. Camp was predeceased by a son, Jason Camp.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Jan. 10, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley with Rev. Gary Edwards officiating.

JEFFREY DANIEL ABERCROMBIE

PICKENS — Jeffrey Daniel Abercrombie, 49, loving husband to Kasey LeeAnn Abercrombie, entered Heaven on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023.

Born Feb. 24, 1974, in Greenville County, Jeff was a lifelong resident of Pickens County. He was the son of Daniel “Danny” Abercrombie and Joyce Cantrell Abercrombie. He loved Clemson football and hunting. He loved his family and his dogs. Jeff was an outgoing person who enjoyed socializing and was well known for his infectious smile. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Pickens.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jeff is survived by three daughters, Taylor Abercrombie Barger (Brian), Alexis Catlin and Charlee Abercrombie, all of Pickens; a sister, Bettina Keasler (David) of Pickens; a niece, Bailey Keasler; and a nephew, D.J. Keasler.

Memorial services were held Jan. 7 in the sanctuary of Red Hill Baptist Church in Pickens.

DANIEL BRAZINSKI

PICKENS — Daniel Brazinski, 79, loving husband of 59 years to Kathy Brazinski, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at AnMed Medical Center in Anderson.

Born Oct. 12, 1944, in Avon Park, Fla., Mr. Brazinski was the son of the late John Brazinski and Loraine Harrington Brazinski. Dan was devoted to his faith in God. He loved his family dearly. Dan was an engineer by profession. He was a leader and was of the utmost character. He loved working with flowers in his yard. Dan attended the United States Air Force Academy. Mr. Brazinski was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus and served as a Eucharistic minister in his church, St. Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson. He was a former member of the Liberty Lions Club. He was a volunteer of Feed a Hungry Child and very involved in All Pro Dads.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Brazinski of the home; one son, Daniel L. Brazinski (Tammy) of Pickens; eight grandchildren, Emily Brazinski, Luke Brazinski, Johanna Brazinski, Allie Brazinski, Jayden Brazinski, Jakob Brazinski, Liam Brazinski and Ashley Brazinski; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Franklin Brazinski (Marcia) of Sautee Nacoochee, Ga., and Bruce A. Brazinski (Gwen) of Brooksville, Fla.; two nieces, Shana Eller (Shane) and Laura Demars (Will); and six nephews, Jason Brazinski (Jennifer), Dylan Faltus (Rozy), Kasey Faltus (Nichole), Justin Faltus (Trinity), Scott Brazinski (Jennifer) and Stephen Brazinski (Gina).

In addition to his parents, Mr. Brazinski was predeceased by a son, Ben Brazinski, and a nephew, Kyle Faltus.

A memorial mass was held on Jan. 9 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson, followed by a reception.

CAROLYN J. SIMMONS ROSS

EASLEY — Carolyn J. Simmons Ross, 73, passed away peacefully at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, after years of declining health.

Mrs. Ross was born at home in Pickens, on July 16, 1950, to the late Harold E. Simmons and Margaret Leecie Owens Simmons. She graduated Pickens High School in 1968 and attended Draughon’s Business College in Greenville, where she refined her skills as a businesswoman and an entrepreneur. She eventually owned two businesses in Easley, Carolyn’s Alterations and G&R Mechanical Services, operating G&R until her health began to decline in 2002.

She loved flowers and was a certified master gardener. She could grow anything and was well known for her green thumb. Her yard was full of blooms all year long.

Mrs. Ross is survived by her husband of 54 years, Roy A. Ross; two daughters, Angela Dalton (Spencer) and Shana Dalton (Jason), both of Easley; a nephew raised as a son in the home, Alex Simmons (Stacy) of Pickens; five grandchildren, Storie Welborn (Cliff), Joey Dalton, Chloe Dalton, Kinsley Simmons, Audrey Kate Simmons and Baylee Welborn; and two great-grandsons, Braylon and Braxton Edwards. She is also survived by her lifelong best friend, Carolyn H. Gravely of Pickens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Gary Harold Simmons and an infant son, Jason Roy Ross.

Funeral services were held Jan. 6 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial followed the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

RALPH WILLIAM REECE

PICKENS — Mr. Ralph William Reece, 86, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at Manna Post Acute in Pickens.

Ralph was born on Nov. 28, 1937, in Greenwood, to the late Duke William and Pauline Nix Reece. He was a logger by profession. Ralph was a hard worker and was truly gifted in his ability to operate a chain saw and in timber cutting.

He enjoyed wading a mountain stream while trout fishing and rabbit hunting with a good pack of beagles.

Ralph is survived by one daughter, Ann Clardy (Greg) of Liberty; one brother, Carl Reece of Pickens; one grandson, James Moser of Liberty; two great-grandchildren, Amber Thomas and Brenden Moser; and a special friend at Manna, Connie Evans.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Crawford Reece; one daughter, Lisa Simmons; and six sisters, Ruth Martin, Edna Lee Reece, Mildred Derossett, Jean Cappel, Helen Sexton and Linda FInley.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Manna Post Acute for their devotion and care toward Ralph for the last four years. Ralph battled dementia, and the excellent care he received from the nurses and CNAs there surely made a difficult situation much better. Ralph loved to be around other people and could be found in the hallways at Manna socializing with the staff and other residents until recently, when he experienced a rapid decline in health. We would also like to thank Affinity Hospice for the care and comfort they provided for Ralph.

No services are planned, and the family asks that any memorials be made to Miracle Hill Ministries or Pickens County Meals on Wheels.

Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

LINDA M. CROCKER

PICKENS — Linda Mitchell Crocker, 79, wife of Timothy Crocker, went to be with the Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John and Bernice Cochenour Mitchell.  She was an alum of the University of Ohio for her undergraduate degree and Michigan State University for her Ph.D.

Linda loved all kinds of animals, especially her dogs and fish she had over the years, and she enjoyed watching and identifying birds of all kinds. She was an avid reader and appreciated a variety of music types, in addition to playing the piano and the guitar. She loved being out on the water fishing and birdwatching in the Gulf of Mexico near Horseshoe Beach, Fla., and later playing with her dogs on the beach in St. Augustine Beach, Fla.

Linda was a long-term, dedicated employee of the University of Florida, serving in a variety of capacities, including associate dean of graduate studies and research in the College of Education, a graduate teaching professor of test measurement and theory, mentoring many graduate research students, performing research and issuing publications, including as co-author of the well-respected graduate text book “Introduction of Classical and Modern Test Theory” by Crocker and Algina. (This book led to an informal title as “Goddess of Measurement” later in life, which Linda found to be humorous on multiple levels). Later in her career and beyond the University of Florida, she continued to contribute to the field of test measurement by serving as a consultant on various boards and with testing entities such as the GRE. She also served as the president of the National Council of Measurement and Education from 2002-03.

In addition to her loving husband of 53 years, Tim, Linda is survived by her daughter, Anne Elizabeth “Beth” Crocker of Seneca, and her son, John Timothy Crocker of Atlanta, as well as an extended family that included many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who she enjoyed spending time with. Linda had a great wit and sense of humor and enjoyed sharing it with family and close friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 10 at Pickens Presbyterian Church, 311 W. Main St., Pickens, SC 29671.

SHAWN KEITH PAYNE

EASLEY — Shawn Keith Payne, 64, of Easley, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1959, in Anderson, the son of the late O’Dell Eugene and Caroline Suttles Payne. Shawn was known for his hardworking nature, dry sense of humor, generous heart and sometimes stubborn nature. In his early years, Shawn worked alongside his father at Payne’s Cabinet Shop. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for craftsmanship, he mastered the art of cabinet making. As a young man, Shawn expanded his skill set and became a certified welder. Alongside his cousin, Tony Bradberry, Shawn formed an unbreakable bond that resembled that of brothers, from their earliest memories as toddlers to the present day. Their kinship was evident to all who knew them. He attended Jones Avenue Baptist Church.

Shawn is survived by a daughter, Cassie Cheyenne Payne; his two sisters, Dell Marie Holcombe and Yvonne Eugenia Payne; a nephew, Mark Holcombe; a niece, Heather Johnson; a great-niece, Cosette McCullough; and several cousins, whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:15 p.m. Jan. 10 at Robinson Funeral Home – Downtown. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow the service in the Glen Vista Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens.

The family will be at the home of his sister, Dell Holcombe.

MRS. LUCILLE CLARK HUGHES

LIBERTY — Lucille Clark Hughes passed away on Jan. 4, 2024, surrounded by her family, who she adored so much. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Hughes was born on April 17, 1932, to the late Joe and Nell Langston Clark.

She was the widow of Mr. James David Hughes, who she still spoke of as sweetly as the day she married him.

Lucille, although more lovingly known as “Jamma,” is survived by her only daughter, Carol Stewart; her only granddaughter, Tia Swafford (Brian); and her only great-granddaughter, Reagan Lucy Swafford.

In addition to her husband and parents, Lucille was preceded in death by a sister, Nona Watt; two brothers, Wayne Clark and Ray Clark; and her son-in-law, Marion Stewart.

She worked for 38 years at West Point Stevens in Clemson. After retiring from West Point Stevens, she worked for several years at Hardee’s in Liberty and left there “only to rock my Reagan after she was born.”

She was a faithful member of Calumet Baptist Church. She loved her church family dearly. Alongside her husband, she also served many years at Easley Baptist Hospital as a volunteer.

The family wishes for the Liberty community that Mrs. Hughes held so dear to remember her for the hard worker she was, the dedicated matriarch she was, and the genuinely kind soul that she had. It’s no surprise that Lucille became “Jamma” not only to Tia and Reagan, but to everyone who knew her. You didn’t leave a visit with her without a full belly, a snack to take home and a warm feeling in your heart. Her lap not only held Carol, Reagan and Tia, but so many children who she loved to read to and tell them how special they were. She was a beautiful story-teller, sharing her wisdom with anyone who wanted to hear it, and if you had the blessing of spending time with her, you are a better person for it. Jamma took pristine care of things and people, and if it was ever broken, she believed in fixing it. She truly left things and people better than she found them.

To honor Lucille’s life and celebrate her homegoing, funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

BLENDA ALLEN

EASLEY — Blenda Allen, 82, loving wife of 65 years to the late Garland Nean Allen, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at her home.

A native of Pickens County, Blenda was born Sept. 13, 1941, the daughter of the late John Geer Chastain and Maude King Chastain. Mrs. Allen was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Tammy Trotter (Danny) of Pickens, Tina Stewart (Blair) of Zirconia, N.C., and Jennifer Norris (Marlin) of Norris; grandchildren, Jessica, Kayla, Brittany Lucas, Christen, Spencer, Griffin, Geer, Nathan and Aden; and great-grandchildren, Chance, Brinnley, Collins, Hinsley, Mercy Cate, Judson, Charlie, Henry and Margo.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Allen was predeceased by a daughter, Hassie Allen Smith. She was the last surviving member of her seven sisters and three brothers.

JAMES DOUGLAS (DOUG) MASON

 

PICKENS — James Douglas (Doug) Mason, 89, loving husband of 60 years to the late Doris F. Mason, passed away on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born Mar. 7, 1934, in Pickens County, Doug was the son of the late Roy Mason and Maybelle Alexander Mason. Mr. Mason was a United States Air Force veteran. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis R. Gilstrap (Gerald); grandchildren, Jill G. May (Wayland), and Philip G. Gilstrap (Jennifer); and a great-grandson, Lane Evatt Gilstrap.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Mason was predeceased by a brother, Roy Mason, Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Patterson and Jeanette M. Bryant.

A graveside service was held at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley on Jan. 5.
