Carolyn Virginia Youngblood Cooper

GREENWOOD — Carolyn Virginia Youngblood Cooper, 88, formerly of Garner Heights Road, widow of Rev. E.A. Cooper, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at Bellevue Skilled Nursing Center in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Born in Westminster, she was a daughter of the late Joseph “Buster” and Lila Walt Youngblood. Mrs. Cooper served along the side her husband as he pastored Glassy Mt. Baptist Church in Pickens and East Side Baptist Church in Greenwood for many years. Rev. Cooper founded East Side Christian School, where Mrs. Cooper taught preschool children. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood.

She is survived by her son, Skeets R. Cooper (Judy) of Pickens; her daughter, Jacqueline Cooper Young (Ken) of Yukon, Okla.; her brother, John Ed Youngblood of Pickens; grandchildren, Lori Hansen (Scott), Christy Todd, Kimberley Stanton (Bobby), Andrew Young and Kara Young; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, Aileen Williams of Walhalla, and a great-grandson of Pickens.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kevin Hembree and Rev. Ken Young officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens, with the Rev. Randy Ouzts and Pastor Donald Ramsey officiating.

Honorary escort will be the ladies of Calvary Baptist Church and East Side Baptist Church, along with her “adopted daughters” Bonnie Grancelli and Brenda Gail Avery.

FRED LEE GALLOWAY SR.

PICKENS — Mr. Fred Lee Galloway Sr., 78, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Mr. Galloway was born in Oconee County and was the son of the late James Flemon Galloway and Bessie Nichols Galloway and husband to Elizabeth McCollum.

Along with his wife, Elizabeth McCollum, survivors include a daughter, Angela Kelley (Donald) of Easley; a son, Freddie L. Galloway Jr. of Pickens; four loving and precious grandchildren, Ashley Goss (Frankie) of Six Mile, Darlene Raines of Six Mile, Kerry Hamilton of Easley and Heather Hamilton of Easley; and 14 most precious and loving great-grandchildren. He is survived by a brother, Ted Galloway (Betty) of Salem, and two sisters, Elizabeth Bearden of Easley and Sue Simmons of Georgia.

Mr. Galloway was predeceased by brothers L.D., John, Harald, Sam, Bill and Vernon Galloway and a sister, Rhonda Galloway.

Mr. Galloway was a 20-plus year veteran of the United States Army, having served two terms in Vietnam. He loved his family and was a great man to them. He enjoyed bowling, fishing for anything that would bite and Carolina football. He will be greatly missed by his family, having been taken from them way too soon.

A visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 1:30-2:45 p.m., with a chapel service to follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park following the service.

MILDRED BREWER

EASLEY — Mildred Louise Holder Brewer, 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Pickens, she was the wife of Larry Richard Brewer for 55 years and the daughter of the late Eddie and Hattie Mae Patterson Holder.

She loved working in areas that served the community. She worked many years as an administrative assistant at area churches, most recently at Secona Baptist Church. She worked at the Red Cross and was a prior director for Meals on Wheels. During her free time, she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Brewer and her husband were longtime members of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of the home, are a son, Greg Brewer Sr. (Rene’) of Easley; two daughters, Teresa Cook (Henry) of Easley and Kim Wilson (Shane) of Easley; two sisters, Joyce Hayes and Debbie Mason, both of Pickens; six grandchildren, Greg Brewer Jr., Jonathan Brewer, Timothy Brewer, Christopher Turner, Michael Chapman and Lauren Harvey; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marylin Walker and Joan Bay; a granddaughter, Ashley Brewer; and a great-granddaughter, Ada.

Private graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park. No formal visitation is planned. However, her remains will be available for viewing from 1-5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, at the mortuary. A livestream of the service will be available after noon on Saturday, Jan. 9, by visiting her obituary at libertymortuary.com.

DELLA GILLESPIE

LIBERTY — Della Mae Gillespie, 70, of Liberty, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at the Cottingham Hospice House.

Born in Brevard, N.C., she was the widow of John William Gillespie Sr. and a daughter of the late Thomas and Texie Merck Reynolds.

She was a homemaker and a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Jeannie Youngblood (Randy) of Liberty, Laura King of Pickens and Mary Cox (JW) of Pickens; a sister, Bonnie Brannon of Liberty; three sons, Billy Gillespie of Easley, Ricky Gillespie (Tracey) of Liberty and William Gillespie of Liberty; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Gillespie will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens. No visitation is planned, and seating for the service will be limited to 50 people.

WILLIAM BILL RAY HARE JR.

CLEMSON — William (Bill) Ray Hare Jr. 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, after a brief illness.

He was born to parents Ray W. Hare and Pearl McClennahan Hare, on June 29, 1936, in Murfreesboro, Ark. He was a great storyteller, and his favorite stories were about growing up in rural Arkansas with his extended family.

Bill graduated from Henderson State Teacher’s College with a B.S. in math and chemistry in 1957 and went on to earn his master’s degree in mathematics in 1959 and his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1961, both from the University of Florida. Bill went on to teach at Duke University and joined the faculty of Clemson University in the fall of 1964.

He was a beloved mathematics professor for more than 39 years and stayed in touch with many of his students long after he retired. Bill continued as faculty advisor and treasurer for Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies for many years.

Bill and Eleanor were married in May 1973 and raised their blended family in Clemson. They loved to travel and visited every state in the lower 48, Alaska and many areas of Canada and Mexico over the years. They often stopped to visit relatives and old friends in their travels and made an annual trek to Canada for the Shaw and Stratford Festivals. Bill was very active with the Clemson Area League of Women Voters and served as its treasurer for many years. He was also very active with Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson, including serving as an EfM leader and singing in the choir. Bill was a member of the Greenville Chorale for more than 40 years. In addition to his travels, Bill and Eleanor loved to attend the opera, and he was very interested in genealogy and studied his family’s roots and history, including attending the annual Hare family reunion in Aiken.

Bill is survived by his wife, Eleanor; sons, Bill (Denise) Hare and David Hare; daughters, Ginny Hare and Cathy (Ed) Huddle; and six grandchildren, Lauren, Kelcy, Will, Lizzy, Peter and Mia. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family, extended family, friends and the Clemson community.

ANDREW ‘ANDY’ WYATT REYNOLDS

PICKENS — Andrew “Andy” Wyatt Reynolds, 48, beloved fiancé of Kimberly Simmons Tate, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Easley, Andy was the son of John Thomas Reynolds and the late Judy Gilstrap Reynolds. Andy was a graduate of Liberty High School and had worked at Pace & Reeves for the last 20 years.

Andy loved his family, friends and community. He was happiest when he was helping others. He never met a stranger and was a true friend to all. He loved riding his motorcycle and believed in enjoying life to the fullest.

Andy is survived by his fiancé, Kimberly Simmons Tate; bonus sons, Aidan and Preston Tate; his father, Tom Reynolds; brother, Tommy Reynolds (Stacey); sister, Mandi Reynolds Turner (Joe); two very special cousins, Bryan Gilbert (Ashley) and Ashley Gilbert Fisher (Kevin); numerous nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends.

Andy was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Gilstrap Reynolds; as well as his grandparents, Wyatt and Leila Gilstrap and John and Martha Reynolds.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Pickens City Amphitheater. For those who would like to participate in the processional, it will begin at the parking lot between Liberty Elementary and the football field at 1:30 p.m.

HELEN MANN FINLEY

PICKENS — Helen Finley, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Born on May 11, 1928, in Pickens, she was the daughter of the late W.C. Mann and the late Viola Trogdon Mann. She was married to Charlie Finley until his passing in 1992.

Helen was a graduate of Pickens High School and Furman University. She was a beloved teacher at Pickens High School, where she taught for 33 years. She loved her students and was active in their lives as a class sponsor, mentor and yearbook sponsor. Helen organized the first yearbook in 1948 while teaching at PHS. We are constantly reminded by past students of the enduring impact Helen had on their lives.

Her family was most important in her life. She is survived by her three children, Becky Lesley (Randy), Chuck Finley (Sandra) and Joan Goodman (Jim). She has five grandchildren, Nikki Culbertson (Matt), Cara Cochran (Brandon), Cherie Yarborough (Clint), Julie Beatty (Brian) and Carly Fitzpatrick (Kason) and 12 great-grandchildren. She was looking forward to adding another great-granddaughter in April. Helen is also survived by her brother-in-law, Cecil Parsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, Ruth Young, and her brother, Bill Mann.

She was an active and faithful member of Pickens First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years. Her life was a living example of her Christian faith.

A graveside service was held for family and friends at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery on Jan. 4.

JIMMY E. WILSON SR.

EASLEY — MSgt. Jimmy “Bones” Ellis Wilson, Sr. (USAF) Ret., 75, husband of Doris Stephens Wilson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Ellis Mac Wilson and the late Bertha Mae Hudson Wilson, Mr. Wilson was a 1964 graduate of Easley High School, where he excelled in basketball and received the Prep All American Award his senior year. He attended North Greenville College, where he played basketball for the Mounties until being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served during the Vietnam War. After his U.S. Army discharge he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he served for more than 27 years, and also retired from BellSouth with 33 years of service.

Bones loved his community and serving veterans. He served as commander of the American Legion Post 52, where he, alongside his Legion brothers, started the Wreaths Across America Easley ceremony. His passion and love for veterans created a bond between he and many others. He just loved serving people and his community. He was an active member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir.

Surviving, in addition to his loving wife of 54 years, are his son, Jimmy Ellis Wilson Jr. (Sarah) of Easley; his brother, Stanley E. (Beetle) Wilson (Patsy) of Easley; his sister, Donna H. Gray (Jake) of Easley; his three grandchildren, who were the loves of his life, Bridgette Casidy Lowdermilk (Caleb), Jimmy “Trey” Ellis Wilson III (Hannah), and David Noel Wilson, all of Easley; four great-grandchildren, Adaira Lowdermilk, Graham Lowdermilk, Kylen Wilson and Noelyn Lowdermilk; and special niece and nephews, Jerry Gray (Barbara), Jeff Gray (Christy), Tracie Gerisch (Eric) and Chaplain (LTC) Timothy Wilson (Becky).

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving grandparents, Grady Whitner Hudson and Mae Collins Hudson.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 5 at Brushy Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in Robinson Memorial Gardens with military honors. The American Legion Post 52 served as escorts of honor.

CHARLES LAIL

SIX MILE — Charles Lail, 72, husband of the late Susie Jesnut Lail, passed away on Monday, Dec. 21, 2020, at Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

A native of Transylvania County, Charles was born on Oct. 23, 1948, the son of the late Joe Avery and Ethel Moore Lail.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Clark of Seneca and Melissa Dalton (Cliff) of Six Mile; two sons, Michael Lail and Jeff Lail, both of Pickens; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters.

In addition to his wife and parents, Charles was preceded in death by one grandchild, two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Lail will be held at a later date.

JOHN ALBERT FOSTER

EASLEY — John Albert Foster, 77, loving husband to Ella Geneva Foster, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown Hospital in Greenville.

A native of Saluda, N.C., John was born Feb. 12, 1943, the son of the late Bernard C. Foster and Revilee Dill Foster.

John was an avid hunter who loved God, his family and the Carolina Gamecocks. He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Easley. His favorite verse in the Bible was The Lord’s Prayer, Matthew 6:9-13.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Geneva Foster of the home; his three daughters, Teresa Lee Alverson (Steve) of Easley, Robin Lynnette Davis (Tim) of Greenville and Kimberly Dawn Beattie (Kenneth) of Easley; his grandchildren, Tonja Wise (Matt), Steven Alverson (Amber), Shane Alverson, Sydney Davis and Landon Davis; his great-grandchildren, Andrew Alverson, Alyssa Cassell and Ashton Wise; and his siblings, Robert Foster (Frances), Nick Foster (Abby), Betty Davis, Margaret Newman and Jean Randall.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Juanita Whiteside of Columbus, N.C.; and three brothers, Junior Foster of Saluda, N.C., Bill Foster of Hendersonville, N.C., and Charles Foster of Saluda, N.C.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 4, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral home, with Rev. Roger Todd officiating. Entombment followed in the mausoleum chapel in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

LIBERTY — Judith Ann Kempton Salyer, 69, of Liberty, died on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Prisma Health Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born in Coldwater, Mich., she was the wife of Charles Michael Salyer and a daughter of the late Kenneth Earl Kempton and Patricia Ann Carman Hughes. Judy loved drawing and craft work and spending time with her family. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her daughter, JoAnn Lee of Greenville; a son, Michael David Salyer (Valarie), of Greenville; three sisters, Connie Gray of Burr Oak, Mich., Brenda Stephens of Angola, Ind., and Sandy Dowell of Burlington, Mich.; three brothers, Ken Kempton of Bronson, Mich., Robbie Kempton of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Bruce Kempton of Union City, Mich.; grandchildren, Miguel, Michael, Christopher, Micala, Jenna and Malarie; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Allen Salyer; two sisters, Cathy Kauffman and Linda Hughes; and her stepmother, Beverly Smith.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Salyer were held on Jan. 4 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial was held at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

RANDOLPH ‘RANDY’ ALAN OWEN

LIBERTY — Randolph “Randy” Alan Owen, 58, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca.

A native of Anderson County, Randy was born Feb. 5, 1962, the son of Richard Owen of Six Mile and the late Sarah Webb King. Mr. Owen was a member of Davis Creek Baptist Church in Seneca.

In addition to his father, Mr. Owen is survived by his son, Kenneth Allen Owen of Seneca; daughter, Sarah M. Owen of Seneca; grandchildren, Brentley Owen Standridge and Charlie Dean Wade Standridge; siblings, Rick Owen, Cindy Owen Perry, Alton Owen and Levi Owen; stepmother, Jackie Owen of Six Mile; stepfather, Larry King; and stepbrothers, Marty King and Michael King.

Randy was predeceased by his mother, Sarah Webb King of Anderson.

The family will be at the home of Ms. Sarah Owen, 305 Goddard Ave., Seneca, SC 29678.

LIBERTY — Frank James Curtis, 79, passed away on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, at his home in Liberty.

Frank was formerly from Andrews, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Curtis is survived by his children, Catherine Curtis Martin, Mark D. Curtis, Teresa Curtis Viles and Amanda S. Curtis. He leaves behind his ex-wife and friend, Myrtle Curtis. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister, Lois McGaha, and brothers, John and Robert Curtis.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Gerald and William Curtis.

Frank will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Arrangements for a service will be made at a later date.

FRANCIS ‘FRANK’ P. YOUNG

EASLEY — Rev. Francis “Frank” Phillip Young, 78, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of the late Edward Vernon Young and the late Marie Elizabeth Ames Young, Rev. Young received his Master’s degree from the Ohio State University and was a retired Roman Catholic priest from St. Agnes Catholic Church in Brewerton, N.Y.

Surviving are four brothers, Ret. Col. Edward Young of Columbia, Timothy Young of Harrisburg, Pa., Paul Young of Sherburne, N.Y., and Mark Young of Liverpool, N.Y.; three sisters, Anne Young and Claire Root, both of Easley, and Marie Zapf of Gardner, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Young was predeceased by three brothers, William Young, James Robert Young and Peter Young.

A Christian burial will take place at a later date in New York.

BICKNELL EARL ‘BO’ BOWDEN III

EASLEY — Bicknell Earl “Bo” Bowden III, 63, husband of Marian Akins Bowden, went to be with the Lord on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020, after a four-year battle with carcinoma, at his home with his wife and three sons, Jonathan, Daniel and Spencer.

Born in Columbus, Ga., and grew up in Macon, Ga., he was the son of Earl Bowden Jr. and the late Marilyn Bowden. He is also survived by his younger brother, Clay, a lifelong Baptist preacher, who now resides with his wife Rhonda in Lilburn, Ga. “Bo,” as everyone knew him, was a loving husband and father who became an outstanding golf professional. He was proud to be a life member of the PGA of America, with more than 25 years of service.

Bo and his family moved to Easley in 2002 when he became the first golf professional at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset. He previously worked as head professional at golf clubs in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina. Following his collegiate playing career at his beloved Georgia Tech, Bo’s passion became helping others to learn and enjoy the game of golf. A 1980 graduate of Georgia Tech’s business management program, he loved watching and supporting his Yellow Jackets and spending time with his three boys. When not at the course or supporting his sons, Bo loved working in his yard and maintaining his lawn. Bo attended First Baptist Church when his health allowed and set an example of faith for his family that remained strong throughout his life.

Bo’s eldest sons, Jonathan and Daniel, carry on his passion for teaching the game of golf as Division I golf coaches at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington (UNCW) in Wilmington, N.C. His youngest son, Spencer, has established a successful career in Charleston as operations manager with Cru Catering. His wife, Marian, works at Poor Richard’s Booksellers in downtown Easley.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date due to COVID-19.

JENNIE LOU BOGGS NIX

CENTRAL — Jennie Lou Boggs Nix, 76, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

A native of Oconee County (Westminster), Jennie was born on Aug. 10, 1944, the daughter of the late James T. Cox and Louella “Curly” Sanford Cox. Jennie was a homemaker and a member of Keowee Baptist Church in Six Mile.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nix was preceded in death by her first husband, Allan Boggs Sr. of Central; her sister, Barbara Jean Cox; and her brother, Tommy Cox of Westminster.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Dean Nix of the home; her son, Allan Boggs (Freda) of Central; her daughter, Connie Phillip (Griffin) of Anderson; grandchildren, Gabe Boggs, Drew Phillip (Courtney) and Ashley Phillip; and great-grandchildren, Waylon and Jesse Phillip.

SIX MILE — David Hudson, 58, loving husband of Scarlett Hudson, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson.

A native of Greenville County, David was born on Oct. 6, 1962, the son of Carolyn Hawkins and the late David Randolph Hudson.

Survivors include his wife, Scarlett Hudson of Fountain Inn; his mother, Carolyn Hawkins of Bessemer City, N.C.; stepsons, Yunus and Usuf Abuzahri, both of Greenville; brothers, Phillip Hudson, Ronnie Hudson and Donnie Hudson; and sisters, Christine Holland and Brandy Hensley.

David was predeceased by his father, David Randolph Hudson of Bessemer City, N.C.

LOLA FAYE OWEN

PICKENS — Lola Faye Owen, 66, loving wife of Jeremiah Emmett Owen, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020, at her home.

A native of Talladega County, Ala., Faye was born on Sept. 11, 1954, to the late Vet Louis Mathis and Emmer Elizabeth Bussie Smith.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Owen is survived by her daughter, Rachel Meredith (Chris) of Liberty; son, Jeremiah Owen Jr. (Lauree) of Easley; daughter, Rebecca Owen of Pickens; daughter, Elvie Green (Tim) of Easley; grandchildren, Megan Breland, Dylan Meredith, Cody Barwick, Ethan Barwick, Makenzie Barwick, Kylie Green, Lucas Green, Jaxson Green, Kelsi Owen, Ashten Owen, Jacob Owen, Aaron Gilstrap and Will Owen; great-grandchildren, Karsyn White, Kyler White and Bailey Breland; and siblings, Louis Mathis, Dale Mathis and Selena Reece.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Father’s Vineyard, 118 Woodland Drive, Pickens, SC 29671.

DONALD “DONNIE” LESLIE CHASTAIN

PICKENS — Donald “Donnie” Leslie Chastain, 82, loving husband of 58 years to Reba Haskett Chastain, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at home after a long battle with cancer.

Donald was born Feb. 15, 1938, to the late Beal and Eva Chapman Chastain of the Holly Springs Community in Pickens County.

Mr. Chastain was a loyal employee of Pickens County Solid Waste and retired after many years of service to the county. He also served as chairman of the Holly Springs Cemetery Committee for 16 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Chastain is survived by sisters, Mary Ann Patterson and Mildred Chastain; and brothers, James Allen Chastain and David Chastain (Janet), all of Pickens, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Chastain was preceded in death by his brother, Woodrow “Woodie” Chastain; sister, Martha Chastain Welborn; brother-in-law, John Welborn; and sister-in-law, Patsy “BeBe” Chastain.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a graveside service held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Holly Springs Baptist Church cemetery at 3450 Table Rock Road, Pickens, SC 29671.

CARROLL BRIDGES

CENTRAL — Carroll Bridges, 84, passed away peacefully on Dec. 28, 2020.

Born on Oct. 27, 1936, in Cleveland County, N.C., he was a son of the late Edgar Wiley Bridges and Gertie Wright Bridges. He was married to Carolyn Young Bridges until her death in 2008.

Carroll (known as Monk to friends and Monkpa to his grandchildren) was a kind-hearted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed.

He is survived by his three sons, William Bridges (Mary Noland Bridges) of Central, Steve Bridges of Massachusetts and Keith Bridges (Rachel Gardner Bridges) of Plymouth, Minn.; three grandchildren, Virginia Bridges Gaulin (G. Vincent Gaulin Jr.) of Pendleton, William Taylor Bridges of Litchfield Beach and Rosemary Bridges of Plymouth, Minn.; and one great-grandson, Laurence Benjamin Gaulin of Pendleton. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Joanne Pruette (M.C. Pruette) of Kings Mountain, N.C., Reuben Bridges (Pat Bridges) of Lake Wales, Fla., Brenda Reid of Indian Land and Dennis Bridges (Karen Bridges) of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews who were important to him.

Monk was an active member of Pritchard Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. He enjoyed his career as a draftsman and design engineer and was passionate about his hobbies of woodworking and bluegrass music. He especially enjoyed bluegrass music with his special friend of the last 10 years, Bernice Wilson.

In addition to his parents and wife, Carroll was predeceased by his brother, Bobby Bridges of Kings Mountain, N.C., and his grandson, Andrew (Drew) Ruthven Bridges of Stockbridge, Mass.

A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. The family requests that face coverings be worn and social distancing be observed.

MSGT. Malcolm Earl Newton, U.S. Army, Ret.

CLEVELAND — Malcolm Earl Newton, 88, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at the home of his daughter, Sonya, in Roy, Wash.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he was the widower of his beloved wife of 53 years, Johanna Port Newton and a son of the late Elmer and Clara Grupe Newton.

He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Army, having served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a past master and a member of Parkland-Lakewood Masonic Lodge #299 F & A.M. in Parkland, Wash. He was a member of Pickens Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his four daughters, Sonja Carver of Roy, Wash., Lorna Michael of Cleveland, S.C., Teresa Phillips of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Sybilla Anaya of Tracy, Calif.; two brothers, Mervin Newton, of Greenville, Pa., and Detrick Newton of Fremont, Calif.; a sister, Beverly Marceleno, of Honolulu, Hawaii; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Iglesias.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Newton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Pickens Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Nath Briley. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. No formal visitation is planned.

DELLA DENTON DICKARD

EASLEY — Mrs. Della Denton Dickard, 84, wife of the late James Thomas Dickard, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at her home.

Born in Hiawassee, Ga., a daughter of the late Barnet Denton and the late Ester Parton Denton, Mrs. Dickard retired from Swirl Manufacturing after more than 20 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. She will always be remembered for her love of animals, the outdoors and gardening.

Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Owens and husband, Jerry Hal Owens, of Easley; her sister, Mary Stewart of Clermont, Ga.; her grandson, Erik Owens and wife, Adicia Bolding Owens, of Easley; her step-great-granddaughter, Tricia Evett and husband, Edward; her step-great-granddaughter, Katelyn Fink and husband, Chris; her step-great-great-grandsons, Brayden Bolding, Greyson White, Evan Evett and baby Otto Fink due in May; and numerous nieces and nephews of Northern Georgia.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Dickard was predeceased by two brothers, Cleveland and Junior Denton.

Private graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

DORIS M. LITTLEJOHN

CLEMSON — Doris Asbill McMillan Littlejohn, 98, widow of Charles Edward Littlejohn Jr., passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at her residence.

Doris was born in Salley, a daughter of the late Lyman Abbott and Annie Pauline Asbill McMillan. She was a graduate of Winthrop University and earned her Masters degree from Clemson University. She was a former secretary in the Botany Department at Clemson University and then spent many years as a homemaker, mother and wife. She later taught at D.W. Daniel High School until her retirement. She was a longtime member of Clemson United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Anne Olivia Littlejohn of Atlanta; grandchildren, Brian Edward Beal and wife Kristin of Simpsonville and Gregory Jason Beal of Greenville; and sister, Edna McMillan Todd of Clemson.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Littlejohn was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Carol Littlejohn Beal, and son-in-law, Francis Edward Beal.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 31, 2020, at Clemson United Methodist Church, with Rev. Fran Elrod officiating.

A private family graveside committal service will be held at a later date at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.

KENNETH ‘HAWK’ HOLCOMBE

PICKENS — Joseph Kenneth “Hawk” Holcombe, 83, died on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020, at AnMed Healthcare.

Born in Baltimore, Md., he was a son of the late Joseph Earl Holcombe. Hawk was an avid golfer and was a longtime member at Pickens County Country Club. He previously worked at Central Concrete co., as well as Champion Aviation. He was a member of Gilead Independant Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Sue Thomas Holcombe of the home; a daughter, Angie Cantrell (Charlie) of Marietta; a stepdaughter, Cindy Hamlett (Tony) of Liberty; a son, Scott Holcombe (Joan) of Williamston; a half-sister, Leann Leben of Blackshear, Ga.; a half-brother, Bobby Holcombe of Barnwell; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Holcombe.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Holcombe were held on Dec. 30 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial was at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
