FRANCES EUBANKS CANUP

EASLEY — Mrs. Frances Eubanks Canup, 81, wife of the late Charles Ray Canup, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at her home.

Born in Spartanburg County, a daughter of the late Robert Plato Eubanks and the late Alma Russell Eubanks, Mrs. Canup was a graduate of Landrum High School. She was employed with TG&Y from 1971-1985, Sheriff Appliance from 1985-1987 and Steinmart from 1987-2012. Frances was of the Baptist faith.

Frances always had a heartwarming smile for everyone. She was the rock and head of her family, having taught her children and grandchildren how to make a home. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving are a son, Charles M. Canup (Rose) of Concord, N.C.; two daughters, Cynthia C. Elrod and Christa C. Prevatte (Philip), all of Easley; two brothers, Rev. David Eubanks (Kay) of Landrum and Steve Eubanks (Jessica) of Mobile, Ala.; four sisters, Diane Heckman (Tim) of Landrum, Cathy Coleman of Wilmington, N.C., Polly Partridge (Gary) of Easley and Sharon Foy of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Hope Simmons of Baltimore, Md., Amber Cudy of Greenville, Daniel Elrod of Easley, Pamela Taylor (Benji) of Piedmont, Christine Canup of Concord, N.C., Brea Wright (Jeremy) of Easley, Frances Canup Loren of Concord, N.C., and Fallon Swafford (Thomas) of Easley; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Canup was predeceased by a son, Jeffery R. Canup; a daughter, Janet C. Hunter; three brothers, Bud, John and Crip Eubanks; one sister, Linda Gail Eubanks; and one great-grandchild, Madison Burger.

Memorial services were held on Dec. 26 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with Rev. David Eubanks officiating.

Escorts of honor were Will Crawford, Jeffrey Swafford, Thomas Swafford, Jeremy Wright, Daniel Elrod and Ethan Villalobos.

JOSEPH WILLIAM “BILL” RAVAN

EASLEY — Joseph William (Bill) Ravan Sr., 83, was taken to be with our Lord and Savior on Jan. 1, 2019.

Mr. Ravan is survived by his three children, Margaret Diane Wilson (Gene), Joseph William (Joe) Ravan Jr. (Kathy) and William Mark Ravan (Janet). He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ravan was retired from the city of Greenville, as well as many years in management with J.P. Stevens Textile Co.

A private memorial service for Mr. Ravan will be held by the family at a later date.

DARRYL JOSEPH MEDLIN

EASLEY — Darryl Joseph Medlin, 76, of Easley went to be with his Lord on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Harlie Amos Medlin and Margaret Werner Medlin and husband of Judy Medlin. Mr. Medlin proudly served in the United States Air Force and was a salesman in the commercial truck industry.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of 41 years; two sons, Joseph Darryl Medlin II (Ruby) of Pickens and Jacob Anthony Medlin (Chastity) of Pickens; a daughter, Joni Lynn Parris (Dean) of Pickens; two brothers and a sister of Georgia. Mr. Medlin also leaves five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and a grandchild.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 4 at Dillard Funeral Home.

DON BLACK

EASLEY — Donald Richard Black, 64, of 748 Pistol Club Road, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Liberty, he was a son of the late Roy Robert and Capitola McAlister Black. He was a graduate of Liberty High School and worked as a contractor with Uster.

Don enjoyed boating, the beach in Florida, but most of all, spending time with his loving wife.

Surviving are his wife, Della Sue Black of the home; two sisters-in-law, Gail Santus and Judy Simpson; and a nephew, Michael Santus.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Benjamin, and a brother, Robert Black.

In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Hospice House of Greenville, 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville SC 29680.

Services to honor Don’s life will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Thursday from 1-3 p.m.

NANCY ANN LIPFORD MILLER

EASLEY — Nancy Ann Lipford Miller entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

Nancy was born on April 4, 1935 in Norfolk, Va., and was born again in Christ on March 8, 1953. Nancy graduated from Granby High School and attended Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Va.) and Gordon College (Wenham, Mass.). Nancy married Robert Mark Miller on July 29, 1956. Bob and Nancy raised three children, Robin (Jones), R. Mark Miller Jr. and Renee (Montgomery). Nancy was preceded in death by her son Mark (2006).

Nancy was devoted to her husband and children as a full-time homemaker. She taught elementary school art part-time and was active in her church using her artistic gifts to bless others. Nancy’s steadfast faith and commitment to her Lord Jesus Christ were always witnessed by her family and friends.

Nancy’s love and devotion to God flowed through her to her family.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband Bob, two daughters (Robin and Renee), son-in-law (David Montgomery), four grandsons (David, Adam, Jason and Luke), two granddaughters (Stephanie and Bethanie) and two great-granddaughters (Giselle and Isabella). Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Va. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Psalm 116:15

A celebration of life ceremony was held at Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Easley on Jan. 5. A memorial service and reception was held at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, Va., on Jan. 7.

PATRICIA BRYANT

EASLEY — Mrs. Patricia Ann Kidd Bryant, 71, wife of Roy Edward Bryant, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Ann Early Kidd, Mrs. Bryant was a graduate of Parker High School and was retired from Walmart. She attended Geer Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 54 years, are two sons, Michael Edward Bryant and Mark Allen Bryant, both of Easley; two daughters, Jamie Carol Bryant Bunch (Tom) of Greenville and Sandra Lynn Bryant Finger (Jeff) of Westminster; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bryant was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Kidd, and a sister, Hilda Seacrest.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 7 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial, followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home.

LILLIAN PATTERSON

PICKENS — Mrs. Lillian Patterson, 85, of Pickens, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, in Greenville.

Born in Kershaw, she was the daughter of the late Spofford Baker and Nell Roberts Baker. Mrs. Patterson was an avid knitter and was passionate about the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Tony Patterson, and a sister, Vivian Catoe of Kingstree.

A graveside service was held on Jan. 2 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

DOROTHY C. SOSSAMON

EASLEY — Mrs. Dorothy Cochrane Sossamon, 87, wife of the late Lt. Col. James Fred Sossamon, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., a daughter of the late Ernest Banks Cochrane and the late Elma Mae Reid Cochrane, Mrs. Sossamon was a graduate of Harrisburg High School and a homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Ret. Maj. Richard Mark Sossamon (Gabi) of Germany; two daughters, Lynn S. Price (Steve) of Ozark, Ala., and Kyle S. Puckett (Michael) of Easley; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Cochrane and Kelly Cochrane.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Sossamon was predeceased by three brothers, E. Reid “Sonny” Cochrane, William “Boots” Cochrane and Thomas Edward “Tommy” Cochrane; and a sister, Jean C. Towle.

CATHERINE WINSLETT BROWN

EASLEY — Mrs. Catherine Winslett Brown, 92, wife of the late Perry Ford Brown, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Horace Lee Winslett Sr. and the late Kate Ballentine Winslett, Mrs. Brown was a 1944 graduate of Easley High School and was retired from Easley Textiles with 40 years of service. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Bobby Brown (Kay) and Ricky Brown, both of Easley; two daughters, Ann Brown and Libby Dodson, both of Easley; two daughters-in-law, Paula Brown and Betty Brown, both of Easley; a sister, Dora Ann Twiford (Doc) of Kannapolis, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Ford O. Brown, Dawn Powell, Susan Brown, Kiley Brown, Shelley Sanders and Adison Brown, all of Easley, and Donna Keaton of West Union; two great-grandchildren, Abi Grace Powell and Drew Sanders; and close friends, Robert and Debbie Dover.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Brown was predeceased by two sons, Mike Brown and Donnie Brown; three brothers, Walter “Pop” Winslett, Jimmy “Slew” Winslett and Horace Winslett Jr.; three sisters, Eme Smith, Mary Bagwell and Helen Lynes; and a son-in-law, Marvin Dodson.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 8 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

MILTON BURGESS

CENTRAL — Milton Clyde Burgess, 66, of 464 Robinson Bridge Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Norris, he was the son of the late Manning Clyde and Eunice Kerr Burgess.

He was retired from Duke Energy and was a member of Cateechee Baptist Church. He was a longtime member of the Norris Fire Department, where he served as chief for many years. He loved being outdoors working or cutting grass.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Gilstrap Burgess of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Beacham (Billy) of Norris and Crystal Long (Billy) of Greenville; and three grandchildren, Bobby Long, Colt Beacham and Autumn Long.

Graveside services to honor Milton’s life were conducted on Jan. 7 at Liberty Memorial Gardens by Rev. Dr. Royce Addis. No formal visitation is planned.

MARION KENNETH LOVELL

EASLEY — Marion Kenneth Lovell, 73, of Easley, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at his home.

Born on June 5, 1945, he was the son of the late Carl and Myra Ellenburg Lovell. Marion was a retired auto mechanic, working most of his career at Firestone and Tires Incorporated. He enjoyed fishing and water skiing and was a member of Praise Sanctuary Worship Center.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Lovell; five children, Marion Anthony Lovell (Miranda), Linda Marie Gray (Keith), Matthew Lovell, Wesley Reid (Trace) and Katherine Kay (Jerry); two brothers, Vincent Brown and James Carl Lovell; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Marion was also predeceased by his daughter, Tiffany Lovell, and his brother, Norman Smith.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 6-8 p.m. at Dillard Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with Rev. Jessie Bryant Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

SAMUEL O. CHAPMAN

PICKENS — Samuel Olar Chapman, 99, husband of Betty Jo Gibson Chapman, passed from this life on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018.

Mr. Chapman was born in Pickens County, a son of the late Frank B. and Nora Emma Looper Chapman. He was retired from the Liberty Plant of Woodside Mills and was a member of Elljean Baptist Church. Mr. Chapman served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Betty Jo Chapman; a son, Larry Chapman (Julie); and his daughter, Susan Chapman Crenshaw (Donald), all of Pickens. He is also survived by grandchildren Denise Chapman, Tim Chapman, Travis Crenshaw, Stephanie Powell, Cassie Ansel and Lucas Chapman; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 4 at Dillard Funeral Home in the funeral home chapel. Burial occurred at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
