DEBORAH LOUISE MAIER

EASLEY — Deborah Louise Maier, 75, of Easley, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning Nov. 30, 2025.

Debby was born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 19, 1950 to Peter John McGurk Jr. and Regina Elizabeth McGurk.

Debby worked as a secretary for many years at the United Mine Workers Union in Maryland before moving to Florida in 1989. Shortly after moving to Florida she was hired at Publix in Sunrise, Fla., where she worked in various positions, her latest being a direct store delivery receiving specialist. Debby retired from Publix after more than 20 years of service. It was at Publix that she met her future husband, Robert Maier. They were eventually married on July 11, 1995, in Sapphire, N.C., and remained happily married for more than 30 years.

Debby was a member of Easley First United Methodist Church, and she was also involved in Pickens County Meals on Wheels, where she and her husband would deliver hot meals to people in need.

She loved working in the garden planting flowers and tending to her plants. She loved the outdoors, and she and her husband would often vacation in the mountains of western North Carolina, where they would enjoy hiking, swimming and traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway. They would also take yearly vacations to the beaches in Beaufort, N.C., and the Outer Banks. Debby enjoyed going fishing with her husband, and she also loved watching college and professional football. As a native of Washington, D.C., she was a very avid fan of the Washington Redskins football team.

Debby was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mystery novels. She loved cooking and most of all spending time with her family and grandchildren. Debby was a very outgoing and friendly person, whose smile could light up a room. But most of all she loved living life and hanging out with her husband, Robert.

Deborah is survived by her loving husband, Robert Maier; her son, Donald Moody (Kara); her stepchildren, Mark William Maier (Alicia) and Laura Anne Boone (Seth); her grandchildren, Gavin Moody, Colin Moody, Kaylan Moody, Skyler Moody, Rylee Moody, Caitlyn Grace Maier, Charles Robert Maier and Amelia Boone; her brother, Peter John McGurk III; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and her youngest brother, Danny McGurk.

A visitation was held on Dec. 8 at Robinson Funeral Home in downtown Easley, followed by cremation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date yet to be determined.

JAMES JERRY OWENS

EASLEY — James Jerry Owens, 86, loving husband of 23 years to Peggy Elaine Owens, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Oct. 13, 1939, in Liberty, Jerry was the cherished son of the late Clarence Owens and Irene Patterson Owens. A proud patriot, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 25 years of dedicated service. Following his military career, Jerry continued to serve his community through his work with Oconee Nuclear Station and later as a real estate appraiser.

He found great joy in spending time on his tractor and appreciated the peace and purpose that came with working the land. A faithful member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Jerry lived out his beliefs with quiet strength and sincerity. Above all, he deeply loved his family, who remained the heart of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Owens of the home; children, Mike Owens (Tracy) of Easley, Jim Owens (Phyllis) of Liberty, Kim Ninestein of Easley, Jim Webb (Kerrie) of Easley and Mandi Moore (Nick) of Easley; grandchildren, Mandy Owens (Jen), Andy Owens, Megan Pilgrim (Brandon), Annie Lee (Ryan), Matt Owens (Nicole), Greg Keilman, Tiffany Webb-Beco (Alice), Kristen Sloan (Logan), Isabella Moore, Lainey Moore and O’Neil Moore; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kallan, Jewelyann, Aubree, Corbin, Madison, Lilly, Kate, Avett, Bennett and Logan; and brothers, Fred Owens and Pete Owens (Earline).

In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was predeceased by a granddaughter, Misty Childress.

The family will hold a memorial service, with details to be announced at a later date.

LAURA LEE BLACK

EASLEY — Laura Lee Black, 55, loving wife of 21 years to Gary Black, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born on May 4, 1970, in Greenville, Laura was the beloved daughter of Lawrence Coggins and the late Christine Coggins. She devoted her career to caring for others as a certified nursing assistant in a local nursing home, where her compassion and gentle spirit touched many lives. Laura found joy in the simple comforts of cooking and keeping a warm, welcoming home, and she was a devoted mother whose love and dedication to her family were at the center of all she did.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Black; sons, Timothy Gosnell and Joshua Gosnell; grandchildren, Shaun Pruitt, C.J. Stucky, Johnathan Gosnell, Brayden Gosnell and Kloey Gosnell; and brother, Steven Pruitt.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Black was predeceased by a son, Christopher Dale Pruitt; and her sisters, Christy Pruitt and Marty Hartly.

FLORENCE HUDSON CHILDRESS

EASLEY — Mrs. Florence Hudson Childress, 88, wife of the late Julius Edward Childress, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Edward Guy Hudson and the late Della Moore Hudson, Mrs. Childress retired from Southern Weaving and was a member of Enon Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

Florence loved baking and spending time outdoors gardening, but her greatest love was for her family, and especially her grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Surviving are her son, Derek R. Childress (Lesia) of Easley; two brothers, Carroll Hudson (Carol) and Jerry Hudson (Donna), both of Pickens; a sister, Judy H. Stokes (Doug) of Easley; her grandchildren, Rocky Childress (Brandi), Shawn Roberson, Quentin Childress and Jason Boroughs; and her great-grandchildren, Kase Powell, Kallan Childress, Caleb Howard and Rylee Roberson.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Childress was predeceased by her daughter, Tammy Roberson; a grandson, Craig Roberson; two brothers, Ed Hudson and Elwyn Hudson; and two sisters, Florene H. Cobb and Jean H. Tinsley.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 4 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

JOSEPH CLAUDE ‘JOE’ DODSON

NORRIS — Joseph Claude “Joe” Dodson, 62, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

Born on April 19, 1963, in Easley, Joe was the cherished son of the late Hovey Dodson and Elizabeth Medlin Dodson.

Survivors include his sisters, Dianne Winkler of Liberty and Doris Smith (Van) of Easley; niece, Jennifer Richeson (Kyle); nephews, Tim Winkler and Phillip Winkler; two great-nieces; six great-nephews; one great-great-niece; two great-great-nephews; and longtime companion, Glynnis Duncan.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Dodson was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Doug Winkler.

KATHY MARIE SMITH

EASLEY — Kathy Marie Smith, 74, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, at St. Francis Downtown Hospital in Greenville.

Born on Feb. 16, 1951, in Anderson County, Kathy was the beloved daughter of the late James Elford Brewer and Bert Seaborn Brewer. She was a faithful member of Piedmont Cowboy Church in Piedmont, where her gentle spirit and kind heart were felt by all who knew her.

Kathy dedicated more than 30 years to her nursing career, serving others with compassion, patience and an unwavering commitment to care. Her work touched countless lives, and she carried her calling with both pride and humility.

Above all, Kathy cherished her family. She was a loving sister and mother, but her greatest joy came from being a grandmother. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she poured her heart into every moment spent with them.

Survivors include her sons, Christopher James “Hot Shot” Smith (Charlene P. Frady) of Powdersville, Kevin Michael Smith of Easley and Brandon Shane Painter of Greenwood; grandchildren, Jessie Pearson (Troy), Lindsay Parker (Ricky), Kaiden Smith, Luke Smith, Brittney Painter, Levi Painter, Del Frady and Devon Frady; 21 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jimmy Brewer (Shana) and Johnny Brewer; and nieces and nephews, Heather Brewer, Hope Brewer, Jusitn Brewer, Kelsie Powell (Luke) and Abigale Beason.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a sister, Tammy Painter, and a nephew, Christian Blake Brewer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.

JAMES RAY BARRETT

EASLEY — James Ray Barrett, 48, passed away on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, at his home.

Born on April 10, 1977, in Easley, James was the cherished son of Joseph A. Barrett Jr. and Vanessa Wood Barrett. James had a lifelong love for remote control cars and could often be found tinkering with them, perfecting every detail. Gifted with the hands of a true craftsman, he was a talented handyman and a jack of all trades, always ready to help others with whatever they needed. A true Southern gentleman, James carried himself with kindness, respect and sincerity. He was a devoted son and brother, whose quick wit and wonderful sense of humor brought laughter to all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, James is survived by his daughter, Miley Barrett of Stuart, Fla.; brothers, Jasin Barrett of Stuart, Fla., and Michael Barrett of Easley; stepmother, Karen Barrett; and stepsisters, Tammy Hale of Cortland, Ohio, and Patricia Hale of Andover, Ohio.

JIMMY RAY ANDERSON

LIBERTY — Jimmy Ray Anderson, 84, loving husband to Nancy E. Anderson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Born on Oct. 14, 1941, in Pickens County, Jimmy was the cherished son of the late George and Nina Anderson. A proud United States Army veteran, he served his country with honor before beginning a long and dedicated career with Alice Manufacturing, where he worked faithfully for 40 years.

Jimmy was a loyal member of Gap Hill Church of God in Six Mile and a familiar, friendly face to many in the community. He was also an avid Pickens High School Blue Flame fan, cheering on his hometown teams with enthusiasm and pride.

A hardworking and talented craftsman, he owned and operated Andy’s Sales and Service, where he built a strong reputation for his skill in small engine repair. Jimmy took great pride in his work and in the relationships he formed with those who relied on his dependable expertise.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy E. Anderson of the home; sons, Danny R. Anderson and James Bradley Anderson, both of Sunset; granddaughter, Jena C. Anderson; sister, Georgia Simmons (Richard); brother-in-law, Donnie Evatt; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Anderson was predeceased by his brothers, Fred Anderson and Alvin Anderson.

Funeral service were held on Dec. 5 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens. Burial took place following the service at Bethlehem Church Cemetery in Pickens.

STEVE WILSON

PICKENS — Steve Wilson, 72, loving husband of 25 years to Pam Wilson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 11, 1953, in Greenville, Steve was the cherished son of the late Rev. Bob Wilson and Helen Wilson. Steve was a devoted and loving husband who poured his heart into his family. A proud outdoorsman, he found joy in the quiet of the woods and especially loved spending time hunting. He was also a passionate Florida State Seminoles fan, supporting his team with unwavering enthusiasm. Above all, Steve carried a remarkable fighting spirit, meeting life’s challenges with courage, determination and strength.

Survivors include his wife, Pam Wilson of the home; daughter, Jennifer Wilson Bagwell (Donnie) of Dacusville; grandchildren, Jordan Bagwell, Sara-Grace Bagwell and Autumn Bagwell; sister, Joan Chapman (Richard); special nephew, James Ragsdale (Megan); and granddog, River.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was predeceased by his sisters, Barbara Wilson Keeler and Ann Wilson Hudson.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 6 in the sanctuary of Cannon Mountain Baptist Church in Pickens. Burial took place following the service at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Williamston.

LILA S. BLAKLEY

PICKENS — Lila S. Blakley, 91, loving wife to the late Jerry L. Blakley, went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, at her home.

Born on July 22, 1934, in Pickens County, Mrs. Lila was the cherished daughter of the late Elighue and Minnie Southerland. Her life was a steadfast testimony to her faith. She was a devoted servant of Jesus Christ, known for her unwavering strength as a Christian woman and her heartfelt dedication as a prayer warrior. Mrs. Lila’s loving smile could brighten any room, and she embodied the true meaning of unconditional love as a mother. She treasured her family deeply, especially her children and grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.

Mrs. Lila is survived by her children, Pam Newsome of Williamston, Susan Davis of Pickens, Rena Hughes of Greenville and Michael Blakley (Lois) of Anderson; nine grandchildren, Sherry Stone (Mark), Terena Goss (Jeff), Jeff Newsome (Tasha), Jason Davis (Tracy), Tony Blakley, Jennifer Clark (Chad), Joshua Davis (Tara), Crystal Green (Dustin) and Austin Blakley (Olivia); 17 great-grandchildren, Lauren Liberty, Megan Patton, Reagan Cothran, Matthew Goss, Brianna Newsome, Kaitlyn Davis, Ashley Davis, Hunter Goss, Emerson Blakley, Kaylee Cothran, Kenley Blakley, Fischer Newsome, Lillie Davis, McCaylan Clark, Aiden Blakley-Green, Tanner Clark and Remi Blakley; four great-great-grandchildren, Colton Liberty, Vera Kate Liberty, Logan Baldwin and Lyla Patton; and sisters, Hazel Autry, Barbara Yount and Thelma Collinsworth.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Blakley was predeceased by her siblings, Jerry Southerland, Annie Catron, Alvin Southerland, Calvin Southerland, Dorothy Hudson, Leota Moore, Johnny Southerland and Brandon Southerland; and sons-in-law, Bob Newsome, Sammy Davis and Danny Hughes.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 7 in the sanctuary of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Pickens. The burial was private at Graceland Cemetery West.

COURTNEY DALE WATSON

LIBERTY — Courtney Dale Watson, 25, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, at her home.

Born on May 22, 2000, in Easley, Courtney was the cherished daughter of Scott Watson and Cathy Brooks. She had a deep love for the outdoors and a special place in her heart for animals of all kinds. Creative and talented, she enjoyed spending time crocheting and sharing her handmade pieces with those she loved. Courtney’s radiant smile and joyful spirit could brighten any room, and her presence brought warmth wherever she went. She adored her family dearly and embraced her role as “Aunt Co-Co” with pride and affection, especially loving the time she shared with her nieces and nephews.

Courtney is survived by her father, Scott Watson of Liberty; mother, Cathy Brooks of Texas; siblings, Patrick Watson and Lexi Watson, both of Liberty; grandparents, Dale and Linda Moore of Liberty; sister-in-law, Katie Watson; and special nephew and niece, Kaden and Ellie Watson.

Ms. Watson was predeceased by her grandparents, Henry and Lucille Brooks and Richard Watson; and great-grandparents, Ruby and Bo Ramey and Paul and Margaret Moore.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 9 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.

SALLIE LEE CANTRELL

EASLEY — Sallie Lee Cantrell, 83, of Easley, passed away in Pickens on Nov. 27, 2025.

She was born to the late David DeVore Cantrell and Ruth Wehner Cantrell.

Sallie Lee attended West End Elementary and Easley High School, where she was a member of the 1960 graduating class. She attended Winthrop College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964. She then attended the Medical College of Virginia in 1965, gaining a degree as a dietitian. She became a registered dietitian and worked at Grady Hospital in Atlanta for more than 20 years. She then became a consulting dietitian until her retirement in 2016. Sallie Lee was involved in numerous professional organizations, including the Georgia Dietetic Association, and was a president of the National Dietetic Association. Her work involved primarily hospital care and nursing homecare, and she took great pride in her work in those facilities. She was a lifelong member of Easley First United Methodist Church.

Sallie Lee is survived by her sister, Susan Cantrell Little (Jim), and brother, David DeVore Cantrell, Jr. (Linda). She is also survived by her nieces, Jennifer Little (Mark), Michelle Little (Andy), Abby Martin (Michael) and Heather Foulker (Nathan); nephews, Thomas Jones (Lisa), Christian Jones (Tashia), Chad Jones (Holly), Eric Cantrell (Missy) and Adam Cantrell (Jessica); and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

First and foremost, Sallie Lee loved her family and cherished all of the memories she shared with them. She was never happier than when she was with her family and friends reminiscing about the wonderful times they had.

Sallie Lee loved seeing her friends. She enjoyed meeting with the Easley High School Class of 1960. She was so happy to see and spend time with her friends when attending the 65th Easley High reunion in April of this year.

Nothing made Sallie Lee happier than when she was able to listen to gospel music, including the Gaithers and the Oak Ridge Boys.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers at Manna Acute Care in Pickens and Patriot Hospice in Easley, who provided extraordinary care for Sallie Lee and her family.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 in the fellowship hall at Easley First United Methodist Church, located at 115 W. 1st Ave in Easley.

Palmetto Cremation Service is assisting the family during this time.

 

MARTHA E. HENDRIX TOMPKINS

LIBERTY — Martha E. Hendrix Tompkins, 94, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025.

Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Walker and Margaret Reece Galloway. Martha retired as a seamstress from Sir Shirtmakers.

Surviving are her three daughters, Jean Pate (Danny), Cathy Vinson (Doug) and Wanda Hayter (Mark); two brothers, Larry and Murrell Galloway; three grandchildren, Mark J. Hayter (Tara), Whitney Woods (Tim) and Jennifer Martin (Matt); and six great-grandchildren, Landon and Connor Hayter, Remi and Olivia Woods, and Emmy and Harper Martin, whom she delighted in spoiling and showering with love. Martha was known far and wide for her incredible cooking, especially her famous fried apple pies that became a cherished tradition during the Christmas season.

Martha holds a special place in the hearts of her church family at Golden Grove Wesleyan Church, where her faith and love for the Lord guided her life. She was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially to families in need of a babysitter. Her laughter, kindness and spirit will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Elford Eugene Hendrix; her second husband, George Tompkins; four sisters, Kathleen Stephens, Lorine Bullard, Eunice Noblitt and Geraldine Galloway; four brothers, Marion, Alvin, Broadus and Charles Galloway; and an infant brother.

A funeral service for Mrs. Tompkins will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Following the service, Martha will be laid to rest at Westview Cemetery in Liberty. No visitation is planned.

DAVID HOLMES GESSELL

SIX MILE — Dave Gessell passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 3, 2025, at Six Mile.

He was born Nov. 29, 1951, in Pottstown, Pa., and lived in Hopewell and Charlottesville, Va.; Bath, Ohio; Shelby, N.C.; and Greenville. He married Jo Anne Marr, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, and raised a family in their beloved Victorian farmhouse overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fran Gessell and Lyman Gessell Jr., and brother, Rob Gessell. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Marr Gessell; four sons, Noah Gessell, Fred (Amanda) Gessell, Ben (Amanda) Gessell, and Joe (Alicia) Gessell; grandchildren, Rylee, Gavin, Reagan, Cannon, Corbin, Kaden, Maya, Cullen, Andy, Jake and Brody; sister, Donna (John Segars) Gessell; sisters-in-law, Peggy (Jeff) Bloodworth and Cindy (Steve) Pawlick; brother-in-law, Van Marr; and numerous nephews, nieces and great-nieces and nephews.

Dave graduated from Hopewell High School (Virginia) and University of Akron (Ohio).

Dave was musically oriented, and his children were greatly influenced by his singing, playing and listening. Six Mile Citizen of the Year, Cub Scout master and a talented civil engineer, he was responsible for building the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Greenville and the Ponderosa Athletic Park in Six Mile, as well as many other construction projects.

An avid outdoorsman, he brought all of his friends together for years (the same group is still together today), especially with whitewater sports. His gift of building and fixing things was always admired by his tribe and influenced his children and friends’ lives. He was an avid golfer for many years. He retired and loved having his grandchildren around.

He surprised and delighted everyone with his daily documentation of the sunsets that thrilled and inspired those of us fortunate to be on his list, despite our small screens. When his physical disabilities took hold, he sought another realm for challenge, NYT Crossword puzzles.

An interment is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at Ramsey Creek Preserve, 390 Cobb Bridge Road, Westminster. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

After the Asheville area was ravaged by Hurricane Helene, he kept close tabs on the recovery efforts. The efforts are ongoing. When visiting the area to support its recovering economy, think of Dave, who loved the mountains.

ALVIN HILES

LIBERTY — Alvin Hiles, 74, loving husband of 52 years to Kim Hiles, passed away on Friday, Dec. 5, 2025, at his home.

Born on Aug. 13, 1951, in Pickens County, Alvin was the cherished son of the late Glen and Helen Hiles. A proud United States Army veteran, he served his country with honor and dedication. Alvin found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially spending time fishing and tinkering in his shop, where he was always happiest with a project in hand.

Survivors include his wife, Kim Hiles of the home; children, Stacey Duncan (Tony) of Dacusville and Bailey Hiles of Greenville; grandchildren, Brandon Duncan (Amber) and Brandie Cox (C.J.); great-great-grandchildren, Colton, Maddi, Ayla, Camdon, Raelynn, Derrik, Ava and Maddex; brothers, Gerald Hiles (Sheila) and Mike Hiles (Gail); sister-in-law, Donna Hiles Cranford; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hiles was predeceased by his brother, Tommy Hiles.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3-4 p.m. Dec. 10 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens.
