ANN WILLIAMS SMITH

PICKENS— Ann Williams Smith, 79, of Pickens, passed away on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Leila Golden Smith and wife of the late Truman Williams and Charles Edgar Smith. Mrs. Smith graduated from Seneca High School and retired from Cornell Dubilier before she became a full-time grandmother who took care of a village of grandchildren. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Julie Trull (Gary) and Susan Dunaway; her son, Terry Williams (Emily); stepson, Charles “Hub” Smith (Patsy); stepdaughter Joan Summey (John); brother, Steve Smith; sister, Margaret Gibson; grandchildren, Angie Durham, Zachary Dunaway, T.J. Williams, Katie W. Hamilton, Tessa Dunaway, Chloe Dunaway and Gracie Williams; and great-grandchildren, Anna Claire and Caroline Durham, Allie and Hank Williams. She is also survived by her very special caregiver, Mary Javdan-Inaloo, as well as many loving step-grandchildren and other family members.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 27 at Holly Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

DAVID LEE CHASTAIN

PICKENS — David Lee Chastain, 61, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

A native of Greenville County, David was born June 10, 1959, a son of the late Colon Lee Chastain and Francis Durham Dillard.

David was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one sister, Virginia Chastain of Pickens; one brother, Robert “Bobby” Chastain of Pickens; two nephews; and a special friend, Allen Haynes.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Chastain was predeceased by his stepfather, James Dillard.

The family will be at their respective homes.

VIDA REGINA HOXIT

LIBERTY — Vida Regina Hoxit, 53, daughter of the late George Guy Simmons and Effie Lorie Simmons, passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, at her home.

Vida is survived by her spouse, Jerry Hughes of the home; a daughter, Lisa Marie Trimnal (John Shoemaker) of Anderson; sons, Gregory Simmons (Desirae Denise Burkhalter) of Six Mile and Scotty Trimnal of Anderson; son-in-law, Perry Shoemaker (Jennifer Francis); grandchildren, Christian, Chasidy, Ashton, Greg “Junior”, Christopher, Makenzie, Colby and Caleb; a brother, George Simmons (Lynn) of Pendleton; and a sister-in-law, Rebecca Favre.

Mrs. Hoxit was predeceased by her parents and brothers, David Clyde Simmons and Clarence “Tiny” Valley Simmons.

A private burial will be held at Golden Creek Baptist Church.

MARY ELLEN CHANDLER

EASLEY — Mary Ellen Chandler, 91, daughter of the late William Forest Chandler and Addie Lunette Swayngham Chandler, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020.

Ms. Chandler is survived by a niece, Judy Ballard (Dick) of Easley; nephews, John Chandler (Martha) of Pickens and Jerry Chandler (Sharon) of Seneca; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Hazel Chandler; a brother, William D. Chandler; a nephew, Donald Chandler; and a great-nephew, Nicholas Stewart.

A private burial was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will be at their respective homes. Donations may be made to East Pickens Baptist Church in honor of Mary Chandler.

BETTY HAMMONTREE

PICKENS — Betty Louise Nesbitt Hammontree, 83, of 407 Allgood Bridge Road, died on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Sumter County, she was the widow of Lester Eugene Hammontree and a daughter of the late Robert R. Nesbitt and Alma L. Atkinson Nesbitt. She was a wonderful homemaker and caregiver for everyone. She loved cooking and spending time with her family.

Her faith and relationship with the Lord God was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Haltiwanger and Tina McGaha (Hunter), both of Pickens; a son, Wayne Hammontree (Denise), of Pickens; two grandchildren, Katie Kelley of Pickens and Jonathan Hammontree of Pickens; and one great-grandchild, Zoe Kelley. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

Private graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

JANET GRIFFIN HOPKINS

EASLEY — Janet Griffin Hopkins, born Dec. 25, 1949, to William Woodrow and Clara G. Hopkins, passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020.

Janet is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Derrick (Bennie) of Chapin, and one brother, Jim Hopkins (Donna) of Easley. Other siblings were William Woodrow Hopkins Jr. and Rachel Helen Hopkins Fowler. She is survived by nieces, Laura Newman (Rob) of Southern Pines, Ginger McDonald of North Carolina and Alexis Dudley (Derek) of Key West, Fla.; a step-niece, Jennifer Peden (Doug) of Simpsonville; nephews, Byron Hopkins (Audria) of Williamston and JD Hopkins (Lauren) of Easley; a step-nephew, Jake Nabors of Pickens; six great-nieces; six great-nephews; three great-great-nieces; one great-great-nephew; two great-step-nieces; and a great-step-nephew.

Janet was a long-term caregiver of her nephew, James Woodrow Barbary, deceased.

A lifelong resident of Easley, she was a graduate of Easley High School and North Greenville College and received a degree in physical education from Furman University. Janet loved sports and working with children and youth teaching baseball, softball and other sports. She taught for a period in Pickens County before working at Ryobi in Pickens and as an employee of Pelzer Recreation Department in Pelzer. She was of the Methodist faith growing up at First United Methodist in Easley and was currently a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church of Easley. She was a lay speaker for the Methodist church and had worked for the former director of the Methodist Camp in Cleveland, S.C., during her summers.

MARTHA PILGRIM

NORRIS — Martha Lee Merck Pilgrim, 75, of 101 Jule Merck Road, died on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at North Greenville Hospital.

Born in Six Mile, she was the wife of Willis Franklin Pilgrim and a daughter of the late Welborn Henry and Rosalee Riggins Merck. She was retired from Clemson University, where she worked in the dining hall. She loved hummingbirds, reading, watching Atlanta Braves baseball and spending time with her family. She was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Nathan Pilgrim (Alesha) of Central; a sister, Diane Sloan of Central; five grandchildren, Ethan Marcus, Maegan Breazeale (Austin), Briana Pilgrim, John Richardson and Madison Youngblood; and one great-grandchild, Landyn Davis.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Marcus.

Private graveside services and entombment will be held at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

The family members will be at their respective homes.

LORA KNIGHTON WHITMIRE

EASLEY — Mrs. Lora Knighton Whitmire, 78, wife of the late Clarence Eugene Whitmire, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020.

Born in Woodruff, a daughter of the late Ed Knighton and the late Sally Roper Knighton, Mrs. Whitmire was a graduate of Woodruff High School, retired from Bell South with 30 years of service, and enjoyed her retirement for the past 17 years working at Twin Creek Resort in Gatlinburg, Tenn. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.

Lora loved arts and crafts and camping, but her greatest love was her family. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

Surviving are two sons, Mike Whitmire (Teresa) and Donnie Whitmire (Jennifer), both of Easley; a brother, Buddy Knighton of Woodruff; a sister, Patsy Yarborough of California; five grandchildren, Jeannie Cantrell, Ashley Cantrell, Craig Whitmire, Shane Whitmire and Jessica Henderson; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Whitmire was predeceased by a grandson, PFC Justin Whitmire; seven brothers and four sisters.

Memorial services were held on Nov. 29 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

OTIS TIDWELL

SIX MILE — Otis Tidwell, 78, of Powder Mill Road, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Curtis F. and Laura Frost Tidwell. He was a retired welder from Duke Power. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was also a HAM radio enthusiast. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Joanne Baumgarner Tidwell of the home; two sons, Tim Tidwell (Missy) of Six Mile and Tony Tidwell (Jenifer) of Central; four brothers, Ronald, Robert, Frankie and Sherwood Tidwell, all of Columbia; a sister, Jeanette McCall of Cashiers, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Lilly Tidwell of Central

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Edna Caughman; and two brothers, Charles and Marvin Tidwell.

The family will be at their respective homes.

A private graveside service will be held at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

JONATHAN JEFFERSON-NEAL

PICKENS — Jonathan Ray Jefferson-Neal, 27, passed from this life on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020.

Jonathan was born in Oconee County, son of Bobby Ray Neal and the late Edna Faye Jefferson Neal. He was self-employed in electrical contracting and he was a Baptist. Jonathan was an outdoorsman and loved roosters, hunting and fishing, and he was an avid Carolina Gamecocks fan.

Survivors include his father, Bobby Ray Neal, and stepmother, Melissa Neal. Also surviving are a son, Shaun Lloyd Neal, sister, Kayla Lynn Cunningham, and brother, Timothy Eugene Mathis.

In addition to his mother, Jonathan was preceded in death by his two daughters, Alexa Ann Neal and Miranda Faye Neal.

The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 3:30 p.m., with the Rev. Roger Todd officiating. Burial will be at the Six Mile Church of God cemetery.

CYNTHIA ANN M. EUBANKS

EASLEY — Mrs. Cynthia Ann Middleton Eubanks, 70, wife of the late Oral Eubanks, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020.

Born in Buncombe County, N.C., a daughter of the late John Middleton and the late Dorothy Elizabeth Bailey Middleton, Mrs. Eubanks was a retired painting contractor and of the Pentecostal faith. Cynthia loved flowers, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Surviving are a son, Russell Cleveland Owen of Townville; a daughter, Angela Soulsby (John) of Easley; three brothers, Teddy Joe Middleton of Santee Cooper, Rev. Sherman Middleton of Fletcher, N.C., and Michael Middleton of Calhoun Falls; eight sisters, Patsy Lindsey, Kathy Henson, Linda Middleton, Debbie Connelly, Susie Heath, Lisa Morgan, Denise Causby and Gina Middleton, all of N.C.; six grandchildren, Max, Samantha, Dakota, Courtney, Adrienna and Jeffery; and nine great-grandchildren, Olivia, Lilly, Gabby, Grayson, Forrest, Leo, Lylah, Isiah and Sophia. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Eubanks was predeceased by a daughter, Samantha Williams; a brother, Danny Middleton; and a sister, Chris Stahr.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, prior to the service.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Angela Soulsby.
